Yes, it was a character we cared about being forced to do something way outside his comfort zone and having an emotional reaction consistent with his character. It wasn't over the top action stupidity against an omniscient liquid Terminator.

Agreed, seeing him in turmoil and making a list of pros and cons over killing Krazy 8 really characterized him well. It was all the worse after that little bonding moment they had.
This was the moment when Walter finally broke bad, as symbolized by the shattered plate. Pretty deep stuff.
