The gov got into the liquor racket a few decades ago and literally forced everyone else out just like the mafia does. Now they have zero competition and can charge anything they want to for whatever product they want.
The gov also owns all the power companies and a few other large crown corporations. The canadian government (if someone would take the case on) could be charged with extortion, racketeering and numerous other charges including threatening peoples basic rights as citizens (free market, free trade, look up people bringing beer from quebec to new brunswick) and compramising the integrity of our financial markets.
But im just a leaf....

The NHS will only get better if they outlaw private health care. The reality is in the current situation both parties are likely taking back handers from the healthcare organisations so they give a worse NHS leading to a better income for private industry.
The problem is that the entirety of the government is utterly rife with corruption (a problem faced by basically every country ever.) As long as the same people stay in power, things will *never* get better for the general populace except by happenstance where they happen to stand on the same side as the uber rich few.
The only government that truly helps the working man prosper is a facist government but the media have done to good of a job smearing it.
