He has a well-known gambling problem. Then in the episode where the black convict gets transferred from Stanford, Kevin has him explain what he went to prison for which was insider trading and Kevin said "that sounds a lot like what I do here everyday". Also, when Kevin played Dallas with Daryl and Andy and played stupid and ended up actually stealing their money.
Then in the end, he has a bar. (He said it was from credit of people wanting to buy him drinks, and the owners decided it was cheaper to make him partner instead) That's retarded and would never happen. He had cash stashed away to get a bar and wasn't even playing retarded when they showed up.
He played the long-con.
Personally I don't even think he had a gambling problem. That too was a ruse he started around the office, so if he ever got caught cooking the books, he'd have a damn good reason. "He was retarded/had addiction"

if i recall correctly, at least in seasons 1-3, michael wanted jim as a friend but he valued dwight's skills over jims. jim is definitely not liked by stanley, (I do not think that is funny" on his impression) or oscar, who lies to his face about liking the birthday idea, etc. in fact, pam is the only one in the office who likes jim. they're just apathetic about their dislike for him.
