Two guys who everyone believed to be their friends reveal themselves to be the giant monsters that years ago attacked their home that before that had 100 years of peace.
No one knows the secrets of the that world, where the giants come from or any of that, the good guy can however transform into a monster just like their enemies.
the lack of any good characterization guts the show. the story is slipshod as well. but plot twists, music, animation and concept are all fantastic.

Attack on Titan is like the television equivalent of a Linkin Park song.
If your characters are on the verge of tears and literally screaming about death and being paralized with fear, and gritting their teeth in righteous indignation in every single episode, it sort of robs the entire series of dramatic tension because you're just doing the same melodramatic shtick ad nauseum.

its pretty good and a fun watch but if you don't already enjoy watching anime you probably won't like it. anime is full of plot structures, stereotypes, archetypes, and tropes that western media just doesn't have. its best to dip your toes in elsewhere- an anime that doesn't follow 'anime rules' like ping pong or tatami galaxy, or something well established within western media like Akira or studio ghibli's shit.

I mean it's still a decent manga and I read it to this day but I still miss the times when it didn't attract a Naruto-tier fanbase.
It does a decent job of maintaining interest by introducing a lot of twists and developments by the end of an episode, but I'd hesitate to call it good. There's only the bare minimum of characterization for a handful of characters out of the 15-20 they introduce, and even they don't really develop much beyond typical anime shit like "I was scared before... but know I know I have to fight... to protect the people I care about!". The result is that the story relies almost entirely on it's premise to stay afloat, and that can get old fairly quickly

I was on board until I realized that, instead of being some kind of war story or something, it would just devolve into a series of fights where the main character and maybe some of his friends turn into giants with their magic powers so they can fight the other giants
this exact reason i couldn't watch tokyo ghoul. there's a lot of shit you gotta learn to forgive in anime and in some ways eastern media as a whole. I'm sure there are similar prejudices towards western media, but, being raised on it, and it being essentially the most dominant and universal flavor of media, i wouldn't know what those were.
anyway the reveal was handled in very interesting way within the anime. unlike anything else i've seen before then. essentially the identity of these two titans was a complete mystery (though in retrospect seems so completely fucking obvious i wanted to fucking kill myself) and when this scene happens, when they outright say "hey im reiner the armored titan about to job hard and this is jackass" it happens literally in the background of another conversation.
You essentially "overhear" the reveal from the perspective of mikasa, (black haired chick who gets her slashy on) who is in the midst of a conversation with the rest of the group.
I already knew the twist from having read the manga but that reveal, the way it was handled, blew my mind. Anime has a lot of difficulty overcoming the rigid constructs that define it due to japans shitty bureaucratic 'always defer to your elders no matter what even if they are fucking retarded braindead gooks hellbent on destroying everything you love' culture, otaku fags, weebs, etc. forcing a convention of "the only flavor we like is vanilla so keep feeding us vanilla and don't you dare try to slip some chocolate chips in or we will literally fucking riot".
but attack on titan managed to do something so small yet so interesting here. really surprised me. plus with the money they have for animation now I'm really fuckin pumped about all the upcoming fights. gonna be some good ones.
Character wise, they're kind of static. The show has a lot of fantastic episodes and moments, but the stuff in between is quite mediocre.
It's an okay show, but there is huge glaring flaws. See it as a mixture of kaiju stuff and zombie stuff.
