What happened to the Body Horror genre...

What happened to the Body Horror genre? Why is it that special effects have increased in quality in many regards but we haven't had any good body horror movies in ages?

Desensitization. Also it's just kind of out of style, it comes off as campy these days. It's not cutting edge anymore.

is that from slither?

dude thats gross i'd rather watch generic low budget horror film #12 where there's a ghost that opens its mouth really wide

>campy

This. Only body horror movie I've ever seen that didn't come across as campy and borderline comedy is The Thing.

Cgi can't make good body horror

I think that has far more to do with how garbage many of the latest entries into the genre have been over the years.

Gross-out horror is just not in style right now. The last big body horror release was what, Evil Dead?

fpbp

The sheer amount of torture porn garbage has run it into the ground.

Yeah, I'm trying to think of recent body horror stuff, and it's all total garbage.

>Tusk
>Human centipede

The Skin I Live In, if it even counts, was great though.

winner

Just wait till I sell my Hawkman fan script to WB
Then we will have some great body horror Cinema

The Void was propably the best body horror movie in the last 10 years or so. Obviously the best ones are from the 70s-80s and maybe some from the 90s.
I asked myself why there aren't any body horror movies anymore, too. And i have no idea desu. I guess the genre is just dead and no one wants to invest in it anymore. It really became a niche thing. There's like maybe one or two watchable body horror movies coming out per year lately, the other are c-movie shit with bad cgi.

Fuk u tusk was kino

Splinter was alright

Too disturbing for normies. Just shit out a found footage jumpscare thing about ghosts or possession, much cheaper, easier and reaches a broader audience. No reason not to unless you hate money

Recommend me your best body horror movies. I wanna be disgusted.

It's nasty as fuck.

I wouldn't really categorize torture porn as the same thing as body horror.

Does Alien: Covenant count?

>The Void
Great film. Felt like something taken directly out of a Lovecraft story.

Tusk was more of a black comedy tho.

The Fly. The Fly 2 also has good body horror but the story is shit.

I rewatched The Fly (1986) last week and it's still great. There's something comfy about practical effects and a simple story told well.

Is that the one with the creepy kid in it?

just make a shit horror movie, and add only a LITTLE BIT of body horror. That way, normies will be clamoring about that scene for a couple of days until the focus of their gold fish brains returns to their iDroids.

Body Horro "works" with practical effects, even if they look clearly fake and plastic. CGI would simply make it look meh.

Tetsuo isn't disgusting but it is essential body horror.

Crash is also great but I usually ruin it by whacking off.

What are you talking about? Human Centipede got 2 sequels.

yeah

*tips*

Underrated get

Cronenberg stopped cronenberging shit yp.

Have there been any serious attempts at CGI body horror?

No. It always looks fake and gay.

It's expensive to do well so they don't do it well since movies almost entirely exist to launder money from tax fraud.

The Thing prequel.

This

Why has he been such a normies recently

>This guy directed (and wrote) both Guardians of the Galaxy
I must've watched this movie 5 times in one weekend, when it came out on DVD

and Super.

youtube.com/watch?v=sz7tpJqeKUE

Don't watch if you haven't seen Super.

Raw was pretty good, though it probably doesn't even count as body horror with how little there is.

W-why did he stopped Rick?

There's something in Cronenberg's direction that annoys me, I can't really put my finger on it. Maybe it's too straightforward or something(which doesn't sound bad), what you mentioned as "simple story", I really don't know, but I can't enjoy any of his films much.

Videodrome was cool but I feel like it needed a sequel

>2008

The Thing prequel, but it sucked.
They actually filmed it with pretty good practical effects, but then in post production just cgi-d everything.

With practical effects, even if it doesnt completely convince the audience that it is flesh and blood and bone, it is still there in the scene. CGI usually looks like it isnt even physically there, let alone real flesh.

production costs on ghosts and other spooky invisible creature movies are cheaper. all of those movies also have cut down locations. it's the lesson of cheap shitty movies like blair witch or paranormal activity.

Can someone explain this to me?

80s remake of The Blob. They really go to town on all the different ways a giant, sentient stomach can kill you.

Brain Yunza was amazing at this
Society, Return of the Living Dead 3, Necronomicon have some of the most rad practical horror ever

That's kind of sexy. I have a deep JAP ass tentacle porn sort of fetish and at times I couldn't stop fapping while watching Slither.

>that sewer scene with the kid

Its the 10th EXTRA inning of a baseball game and its most likely 3 or 4 in the morning and that guy went around collecting discarded cups to start off the rally for the home team. Not hard to get.

They really didn't pull their punches

He wanted to be a serious director and you don't win Oscars with Canadian bodyhorror.
Also, I think he didn't want to be typecast.

tusk was great
not knowing it was Mr. jorts going into it helped

What are they doing to Paul Dano?

That movie where a girl is bitten by an insect while in puerto rico and then starts mutating was ok

he has daisy ridley growing out of his wrist

Slither is one of my comfy horror movies

no it had literally zero emotional impact
everyone knew what was gonna happen and some ppl even cheered because the characters were bland and unlikable

I know what you mean.

It's that they're too flat. There's no peaks and valleys, they just stay on the same emotional level.

I love his films, but thats a huge flaw all of them have.

That poster sucks, man. And the trailer was even worse.

I quite enjoyed Clown.

MAN, Necronomicon fucked me up in the head as a kid and Society looks even worse than that.

I hope you realize the relief you gave me by pointing this out. It's has been bothering me so much.
Thanks user!

The Blob (80s Version): one of the rare major motion pictures with the balls to kill a kid - and quite /horribly/, at that.

Based. Whenever Frank Darabont is involved, not even the chilluns are safe (The Mist).

remember the woman entrapped from all sides in the phone booth?
shit was fucking scary

Saw ran the genre into the ground with by over-saturating the market with tasteless gore and ultraviolence with zero substance. The one where Jigsaw kills the guy for wanting to save more people pissed me off. The first one had a great ending though.

What happened to that guy who was mixing drinks at the back of his car? Did he survive the movie? And what kind of drinks was he mixing, I don't drink alcoholic beverages and haven't really ever gone to a bar where the bar tenders were mixing drinks. Although, I did watch that Coyote Ugly movie a long time ago, I think that had some drink/alcoholic beverage mixing in that movie, it didn't make me want to drink, just made me stay home watching the movie.

This

society was fucking terrible.

this guy?

What movie?

...

I think it was called bite, its a fairly new movie

>he one where Jigsaw kills the guy for wanting to save more people pissed me off
What one was that? And was that real Jigsaw or Costas Mandylor Jigsaw?

...

...

yuck that scene was grross. i'm not being sarcastic

wow this looks so fuking cool

This shit. This fucking shit. I can't watch this movie ever again.

Trailer seems hilarious.

DO IT

Fucking horrifying, could you imagine watching this happen to someone?

This and it's sequel were pretty ok but not original

Ah! What a scene! I remember it being longer, tho.

It's hard to imagine a worse death than being melted...

I hate jump scares, and I love body horror and Lovecraftian scares. AM I KINO YET

I hate jump scares. I also hate when jokes have a punchline. What crap!

guyver

tetsuo

No, you're still autism

source?

sword and sorcerer

I jerked off to Society, now I visit /d/
