Better question is: why did they stick around the base after blowing up the Death Star, even taking time to polish up Artoo and have a lavish awards ceremony? Because the Empire knew exactly where they were, now, and logically there should've been fleets of Star Destroyers on their way to finish what the Death Star couldn't.
