The main competition you may have not noticed as a typical movie Goer, but I believe budgets have massively been refocused. Take the Kong movie recently- nearly every human death was a cgi write off. Just think about how that shifts the shooting sessions- makeup, ballistics fx, onsite creative input all slashed. Planning movies seems to revolve around conveying things more and more faster, as a series of check marks the audience must hit to get the cheap parts of shooting unfolding. This has put talent in an interesting spot, basically the only thing actors are trusted to really pick up the slack in the worst parts. Just look at Split- the main actor was carrying the movie in the trailer and really getting you interested about the possibility of the plot. But it turned out that it was just a rigorous terror retread of too many cooks ina kitchen except with one guy, no real mystery except some half baked superhuman elements. The whole trend is basically now television and film is a necessary requirement so they realize they can slop just enough for you to revere, echo and preach. They are simply too scared to push the envelope because they know they will run out of ideas quickly, so in return all the creative input around production is also halfed as all the talent refrain from giving away their fondest ideas. This is all because of the necessity of these films in culture, they're always thinking on how to get payed down the road, when in this industry it should be most rewarding to be spontaneous and engrossed
