It only works in a society that revolves around the idea of cultural and ethnic unity. The problem with "altruism" in a mixed society is that it will never be homogeneous throughout society. In other words, the only "socialism" in consonance with natural laws is the socialism of the family, and of the extended family. Only in ethnically homogenous nation states can you sacrifice for your people, your "family", in a way that benefits yourself as an individual. Both extreme collectivism that sublimates the individual, and extreme individualism, (eg, Rand/objectivism), are deadly. A nation that is not your family in some fundamental sense cannot be sacrificed for, nor will it value and protect the individual.
