How was Bowie so popular? He didn't have many number 1 hits or anything so why was he cast in alot of TV and movies?

Bowie was more of the good albums than singles. Also the fact that space oddity, heroes, station to station etc were too long of songs for to be singles.

He simply didn't play the singles game and instead released beloved album after beloved album, while also embracing the future at every turn so he never became that stale old artist still playing the same tunes of his youth.
