Does watching cartoons as an adult carry the same stigma with it as watching anime as an adult?

Does watching cartoons as an adult carry the same stigma with it as watching anime as an adult?

Depends which age group you're talking to

yes if MLP

Nah, the Simpsons made it pretty mainstream. Watching kids cartoons might seem kind of weird to people but you wouldn't be considered some kinda freak like weebs are

Depends a lot on the cartoon, and how many you watch. Well known cartoons with mainstream appeal, watched as part of a more balanced media diet, have no stigma associated with them. But if you're watching a lot of cartoons, or one or two really stigmatized ones, people will start to think you're weird.

Depends on if you do it ironically or not.

depends but generally it's not as bad

examples:
the simpsons
rick and morty
adventure time+weed
classic looney tunes and tom and jerry

A lot of "adults" watch Family Guy and The Simpsons so I don't think so. As long as you don't watch shows for explicit children you are good.

Pretty sure it depends who you mingle with and what your excuse is. If you are a well established artist or parent with a kid you could get away with it as doing a job or simply cute. Otherwise telling your co workers that you are going to miss the latest episode of Steven Universe if you take the extra shift will get you a couple of awkward stares at best.

They're both different types of manchild if you make them a big part of your identity.

If you just casually mention once that you like a show from either category it shouldn't come off as too weird, unless it's something with a bad reputation or you come off as an obsessive fan. Or if you just bring it up constantly or out of nowhere.

But if someone already thinks you're a manchild for watching cartoons, they're not gonna change their opinion because "ACTUALLY it's anime" unless they're into that themselves.

So, yes.

Cartoons and Anime are the same thing to people who would ridicule other people for watching animated tv shows. Though anime make those people think you watch fucked up porn.

Even more. At least anime has adult stuff in it.

If an adult(read: manchild) starts sperging about K-On and his waifus and his 3000 year old not-lolis I would NOPED the fuck away faster than a feminist in a 100 million marriage.

If they start sperging about Evangelion I would just ignore them.

Correct answer. No one will think you're weird for being 30 and fondly remembering Spongebob or watching Steven Universe with your kids. People will think it's weird if cartoons are all you watch.

Only small horses tbqhwyf

I think most adults, particularly those under 30, either watch cartoons or know other adults who do. I know a fuckton of people who watch Adventure Time.

Sup Forums or Sup Forums?

I'll watch cartoons til the day I die idgaf

Nah Kanye and John Cena watch anime

I find more adults (20~30years old) who regularly watch anime than adults who watch cartoons.

you realize anime is actually frowned upon in Japan right and it's main demographic is mainly angst Japanese teenage girls and femboys? If your implication is anime is more mature just because it has more graphic content you may be right but it doesn't make the anime any better. Scat porn is pretty graphic too but most people aren't into that.

Seriously, it always amused me how weaboos here in the west think they're cool for watching foreign cartoons. That's literally all they are, foreign cartoons. Anime can even be translated to animation. So when you compare anime to cartoons its like comparing green bananas to yellow bananas.

What is Shonen

In my age group, it's not that surprising anymore if you watch cartoons.
I've got a few friends that share the same taste as I have but I know more people who watch chinese cartoons over western and one or two of them are pretty much jaded outcasts that nobody really likes.

It's arguably worse because at least some Anime is, generally speaking, made for adults.

But then, who the hell is gonna judge me? It's not like I tell everyone I met that I watch cartoons.

It probably has more stigma.

People associate stuff like Studio Ghibli or GitS with anime. I know a lot of normalfags who love a select catalogue of anime but consider western cartoons totally beneath them.

>It's arguably worse
Care to explain? OP didn't specify that adult cartoons like The Simpsons aren't included.

I don't know much about John Cena's personal live but Kanye West doesn't exactly come off as the most... mentally stable person. He might be a bad example.

Anime is seen as worse, I'd say. If only because of two parts, the cultural differences and the scantily clad, busty teens. It's difficult not to seem creepy when you try to convince people the story is superior to most when there are panty shots of 14 yr olds on screen.

People who chastise others for watching cartons are just trying to hide their own insecurities.

A lot of "adult" entertainment is immature mind-rotting garbage.

I'd argue that even the Simpsons target audience are more teens than adults. the same that could be said about most "mature" cartoons.

It's just that I think that society perceives cartoons as more childish than anime. Just my personal impression.

Person who has actually lived in Japan here.

That's bullshit. Obsessing over anime is frowned on, much in the same way as being an obsessive hyper nerd is frowned on basically anywhere. A lot of anime get massive mainstream success in Japan, and their 'normies' do indeed talk about it.

Sure, they won't talk about flava of the week moeblob fetishbait series #132155623, but it's not unusual for people in Japan to be following One Piece or watching whatever brand of Fate/Whatever is currently airing. Let's not even get into the enormous popularity of stuff like Gundam.

No, watching cartoons as an adult is probably more socially acceptable. It depends on the company you're around but considering that watching anime as a whole is definitely less socially acceptable, it's not much of a stretch.

You have your adult cartoons like Family Guy, Archer, Bob's Burgers, etc., that people generally seem to think are funny.

Then you have cartoons like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Spongebob, etc. that are generally seen as having a lot of appeal for adults as well.

>A lot of "adult" entertainment is immature mind-rotting garbage.
This.

Most people are just too full of shit to admit it.

You really are a special kind of dumb if you think anime and cartoons are the same thing.

>its like comparing green bananas to yellow bananas.

Its more like comparing oranges to lemons.

Sure they are both fruits, and they look somewhat alike at a glance, but they aren't the same thing.

Anime fans are more into acting out their favorite scenes, acting like characters or in general just not being able to turn it off when they get around normal people.

Cartoon fans do not go around constantly repeating phrases and generally pretending that they live in a cartoon world out in public. Or totally cover themselves in cartoon inspired clothing when just hanging out in a Target.

Eh, a family watching Spongebob seems more socially acceptable rather than a family watching One Piece or something.

>Most people are just too full of shit to admit it.
No, I think most people are just legitimately not that intelligent.

wrong. me, my family, and my friends repeat spongebob quotes all day, every day.

I'm comfortable around friends to admit watching cartoons. The only anime I'm comfortable to admit watching giant robot stuff or Shonen 80s shit.

If you admit to watching anime as a genre in whole. You're a God damn pervert, a pedo and/or a creepy loser

If you admit to watching cartoons, you need to get out more but aren't beyond help or anything

Both fandoms have those people.

Watching anime is worse.

Unless you're talking about something good like Studio Ghibli, Anime is far more juvenile.

>muh angst
>muh ulta-violence

Meanwhile in the west, even cartoons targeted at 8-year-olds manage to work on more than one level - the level that the kids understand, and the level of the parents watching with their kids.
Do you want shows that pander to the worst things about teens and kids, or do you want shows that elevate kids and teens to help them mature?

Weebs still take the cake though.

Why do you people think that normies never watch anime? In the mid2000s Death Note was a massive success. Both Full Metal Alchemist animes were widely watched by young people. More recently, Attack on Titan was fucking HUGE successes, and to a lesser degree One Punch Man. Tons of non-fujo girls grew up watching Sailor Moon and later Inuyasha in their tweens. Pretty much every 20-30 young man in America grew up on Funimation DBZ. Niggas in particular are obsessed with Naruto. EVERYONE watched Pokemon growing up. Being a "nerd" isn't even weird these days, why do you think the Marvel movies + Skyrim sold like crazy?

Trust me, telling people you watched Attack on Titan isn't going to get you socially ostracized you idiots.

>Does watching cartoons as an adult carry the same stigma with it as watching anime as an adult?

Depends on the cartoon, the anime, and who you're talking to.

Old shit always gets a pass. You can be whatever and still get to watch Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry. Same with anime: classics like Akira, DBZ, or Ghost in the Shell.

You can also tend to get away with watching cartoons and anime aimed at older audiences. Family Guy, Robot Chicken, or anime with adult characters like Samurai Champloo.

But the older you are, combined with the younger/more recent the target audience, the worse it begins to look. Unless you're hanging out with nerds, in which case we all understand. Not having kids can make it harder to justify too.

Also, being a woman can get you a little leeway, since you can like cute things. If you're a guy, you can benefit from this by saying, "My girlfriend/wife likes it/wanted to see it."

>Being a "nerd" isn't even weird these days, why do you think the Marvel movies + Skyrim sold like crazy?
It's funny, because a lot of those same people who consume that sort of entertainment are still plebs who might judge you for watching or playing less popular shit. Or for reading comics for that matter.
>Trust me, telling people you watched Attack on Titan isn't going to get you socially ostracized you idiots.
Depends entirely on if you're talking to surface-level plebs or straight up normies who don't watch anime at all.

>all these Americans thinking sexuality makes something immature

You guys are killing me here with this Mayflower shit.

Simpsons/Family Guy is made for adults, but teens watch it in the same way lots of rated R action/comedy movies are for adults, but you had better believe a shitload of kids saw it. If it isn't full boring talky drama, people under the appropriate age will watch it.

Ausfag here. Unless its MLP, people generally don't give a shit what you like, from my experience.

>watching anime
>stigma

Jesus I pity those countries

>this fucking post
Also
>Studio Ghibli
Oh jeez

All that was failt popular for kids/teens. Most adults have never heard of Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, or Attack on Titan unless they started watching it in their teens.

DBZ and Pokemon get a pass because people who are adults now *did* watch it in their teens.

But for a 30 year old guy trying to strike up a conversation with other "non-nerdy" 30 year olds about Girls und Panzer or Dagashi Kashi is going to getsome weird looks- once people realize what the fuck you're even talking about.

You haven't watched much anime, have you?

But do their fans?

Anti-satan knows it! It is almost funny how people spout so much bulshit about Japan and or anime absolutely certain that they are cultured and well informed and not ignorant and prejudiced.

Not that user, but I personally don't watch very much anymore. So much of it has gone for cute girls doing cute things, waifu-baiting, sexual misunderstandings, or "battle arcs" that I'm not really interested anymore.

I do jump in whenever they go back to OYW Gundam, Shinichirō Watanabe, Mamorou Oshii, or Ghost in the Shell related gets announced, but that's about it for me anime wise.

I really enjoyed Silver Spoon, though.

>Girls und Panzer
>Dagashi Kashi

I haven't even fucking HEARD of that second one, and I assume the first is one of the those cute girls in the military animes. I was obviously talking the most popular stuff with wide appeal, not flavor of the season moebaits. People that "watch anime" by watching the most popular stuff in the same way that people who watch Marvel movies and maybe a couple essential Deadpool books "love Marvel."

A lot of people in the 20s have watched Death Note and Attack on Titan dude. Again, it's not weird. Factor in streaming sites and such, I would be willing to bet that as many people in America have watched DN and AoT as have Breaking Bad. Nerdy interests really aren't that weird...

Only because they continuously get more material to work with.

>Girls und Panzer or Dagashi Kashi

Why on earth would you talk about non-normie anime to normies?

>implying he's not right
>implying most animu isn't just bullshit padded with cheesecake and cute girls

Maybe you should watch stuff that are not shonen, slice of life, or harems.

Actually dagashi kashi is cute girls talking about candy.

That's some bullshit, the only thing frowned upon is the otaku lifestyle no one here gives a rats small ass if you watch anime or read manga

see

>I would be willing to bet that as many people in America have watched DN and AoT as have Breaking Bad.
>actually believing this

>you realize anime is actually frowned upon in Japan right
>this is what weaboos actually believe

He does.
>OYW Gundam, Shinichirō Watanabe, Mamorou Oshii, or Ghost in the Shell related gets announced
Too bad shonenshit, SoL, and harem crap still permiate the medium

does normie just mean people with a modicum of decency that will not just eat up everything with underaged girls?

You'd be surprised

Cause it's not, but that meme has still been going strong ever since K-on despite shit like that existing way before it

See

Breaking Bad is far, far and away more normie than Death Note or AoT.

Again, you'd be surprised.

Nigga please.

No he really fucking wouldn't. I don't know what info you think you have that backs this up but its faulty.

For the Nth time, you'd be surprised. Stop pretending you're someone else.

>tfw lcs sells manga and comics

>I haven't even fucking HEARD of that second one, and I assume the first is one of the those cute girls in the military animes. I was obviously talking the most popular stuff with wide appeal, not flavor of the season moebaits.

But that's some of the latest anime to come out. Again, my point about people looking at you crazy for talking about the new stuff. They'd still look at you weird if you were talking about Gintama or Haikyuu.

>>A lot of people in the 20s have watched Death Note and Attack on Titan dude.

Yeah they have. Those shows came out like 3-10 years ago. If you're in your early 20's, you started watching in your late teens.

But most folks in their 30's are not watching anime that came out a couple years ago, is what I'm saying.

It depends on how successful you are overall as a person.

educated with a high paying job, watch cartoons to unwind = no one cares

NEET living with parents = pathetic

Prove it faggot.

>For the Nth time, you'd be surprised. Stop pretending you're someone else.

Call me when they're talking about DN or AoT on the news.

...

I got a couple co workers who like Korra and OPM. It's not that uncommon to like cartoons. They're not quite long diatribes about Family Guy tier like Sup Forums but that's a given.

...

Why would they talk about DN on the news now? It ended fucking 10 years ago.

You'd be surprised. :^)

...

I feel like you guys are warping your own minds. It's like you feed each other your insecurities and together you guys believe that's this world exists where people actually care what your stupid as hobby is. I mean yeah, if you spend all your time obsessing over which character is 'sexier', than yeah, you are a weirdo. But cmon. Liking cartoons doesn't make you a freak.

I don't want to sound like a normie bit fuck it. Likes make this shot anecdotal. I asked my gf if she at any point found it odd that all I want to watch is cartoons. She responded by saying its not weird at all. She found it charming. Especially The fact that I SHOW A GENUINE INTEREST IN SOMETHING THAT NOT EVERYBODY ENJOYS.

OK. I'll being even more of a normie douche. Guys. I literally always make the same joke when meeting someone new. Whether I'm making flirty talk with a girl or trying to have a conversation with ANY guy, I always say, "I can't even watch anything that isn't a cartoon. To fucking boring". You have no idea how much people love that shit. Girls LOVE it. I'm serious. Its a good way to make conversation. And guys think it's funny as shit. Makes you look like a goofball. Even if you are a shy guy like me.

Its ok guys. It's just fucking cartoons. You are either a weirdo or you aren't. Cartoons have nothing to do with it.

>Breaking Bad got huge amounts of mainstream press
>"anime is just as normie I swear!"

that user who made the outrageous claim

I can't back up it because much of anime is watched illegally or on Netflix. Just something I'd bet on because over the decades I found that A) it's surprisingly hard to meet people who have watched Breaking Bad or Saul (meanwhile EVERYONE has watched The Walking Dead and Orange Is The New Black, and a lot of Game of Thrones people too) and B) it's surprisingly easy to meet people you wouldn't expect to have watched popular anime such as DN, CG, AoT, etc.

Absolutely. Cartoons, no matter whom the intended age group may be aimed at are considered children's entertainment. So much so that even a show like South park is seen as incredibly immature and something only a child would watch.

Cartoons never come up in conversation with anyone I would consider an adult. Instead, it's always Game of Thrones or other live action entertainment. Likewise, I have never met an adult who watches anime, let alone knows what it is. No serious adult watches, talks about or is even remotely concerned with cartoons.

To put it simply, if you're over 15 years of age and still watching cartoons/anime you are still a child (at heart). I don't think there is anything wrong with it personally, but it is definitely immature.

...

>John Cena: I watch anime
Huh? OMG U R SO HOT I WASN'T LISTENING. DO ANYTHING YOU WANT TO ME

>user: I watch anime
OMG U R SUCH A FUCKING FREAK HAHAHHAHAHAAH
>user: B-but J-John Cena...
LOL WUT? OMG BECKY COME HERE AND LOOK AT THIS FREAK HAHAHHAA Who even invited you? LOL take his pic for facebook lol

>if you make them a big part of your identity.
This. If you're pretty much a normal guy who also watches cartoons, and you don't change every topic of conversation towards them, it's not weirder than a chick who's into quilting or any other amount of hobby.

But if you're >that guy, the self-declared nerd who wears a variety of cartoon themed clothes, and basically wear your hobby like a badge, then you're a faggot.

Everybody makes fun of Kanye though.

THANK YOU

>Becky
I respect your knowledge of white girl names

That's what he said.

>cousin has wife, kid, manager at his job, just bought a house
>chat about manga cartoons and anime every time I see him
>"no serious adult watches, talks about or is even remotely concerned with cartoons."

Unless you obsess over them to the point of always needlessly inserting them to every conversation, Liking cartoons/anime is not going to have any effect on your social life with people who don't share such interests.

My uncle is married, has a daughter and owns a construction company.

He watches Family Guy.

He is considered the most immature person in our family, he exemplifies what you would call a "man child".

It's not a bad thing, he's very successful in life, but his sense of humor and the things he says are often very childish.

So yes, your cousin IS a man child.

His immaturity is what makes him a manchild, not his watching Family Guy.
