There is no hype for Dofus. Thinking about it hype for Ankama in general died out after the original Kickstarter. By the time I got my DVDs and swag I had almost forgotten it had even happened.

It died because there was no new content from them. Now we have the movie and most people are just waiting for the subs to watch it.
Also there was no DVD in the Kickstarter.
It died because of the lack of content, and then any content that did come out (the OVAs, the movie, etc.) was middling at best, complete shit at worse, it's hard to drum up hype when there's nothing too exciting going on.

the movie's already a flop in franc,e and all you're gonna do by releasing a fan translation is give foreign fans a reason not to buy a possible official release and thus make it even more of a commercial failure.

actually what do you learn in marketing school is people do not know what they really want. If you ask them they'll just say they want more of the same, but if Ankama had only done more of the same they'd still be making flash banner ads for shampoo.

Ankama's been losing money since 2012, due to a number of projects that were canceled (slage, the first Abraka, several TV projects) or perform poorly (the Wakfu MMO gobbled up tons of money while it was in dev hell and isn't getting the traction Dofus had, and they botched the chinese launch), and the animation branch is eating its share too.
The Dofus MMo is producing 75% of their income and most of their other activities are losing money. They were betting a lot on the movie for their long term plans and that they botched the release so spectacularly is a bad sign for their future.
they failed the cinematic release in France. what should they do? A no-sub french only VoD on iTunes.
I have a hard time believing they thought to get rich with their first ever movie.
like the tv shows before it, the movie was meant as a marketing vehicle, and as a demonstration of their technical skill so the company could get more animation deals. But for that to work they needed it to sell plenty of tickets. Which it didn't.
They didn't, they knew they'd be losing money with it no matter what and said so multiple times even before release. However, they wanted to lauch a long term dynamic with it that would pay off over time and multiple projects, but the commercial failure of the first movie was bad enough that it has thwarted their plans

They picked a terrible release date and didn't put ads on TV. Also an animated movie not for preschoolers threw all the casuals off, including theaters themselves. Some only showed it in the mornings.

If you go data wise it was 400 something GB so that's 86 DVDs with 4,7GB or 48 DL DVDs with 8,5 GB.

The BDs are ~290GB actually.
And they cheaped out on the disc count, so the video quality suffered. And that's on top of the poor authoring/mastering. They might have looked a lot better had the discs been authored competently, but ideally there would be a few more discs as well.
