Story Time: Miracle Man by Alan Moore

Alan Moore right before Watchmen, in Miracle Man, we see Alan Moore tackle many ideas he later incorporated into other works, most notably Dr. Manhattan. Marvel Man (later remained Miracle Man) is the UK equivalent to Captain Marvel/Shazam.

I'll be story timing the first issue, plus some of the second issue as well to close out the big reveal at the end of issue 1.

Marvel bought the rights to this series, and it will be interesting to see whether or not they ever get around to doing something with the property.

If you could, let me know if you're reading. That's all I ask.

From Wikipedia's article on Captain Marvel:

In the 1950s, a small British publisher, L. Miller and Son, published a number of black-and-white reprints of American comic books, including the Captain Marvel series. With the outcome of the National v. Fawcett lawsuit, L. Miller and Son found their supply of Captain Marvel material abruptly cut off. They requested the help of a British comic writer, Mick Anglo, who created a thinly-disguised version of the superhero called Marvelman. Captain Marvel, Jr., was adapted to create Young Marvelman, while Mary Marvel had her gender changed to create the male Kid Marvelman. The magic word "Shazam!" was replaced with "Kimota" ("Atomik" spelled backwards). The new characters took over the numbering of the original Captain Marvel's United Kingdom series with issue number #25.

Marvelman ceased publication in 1963, but was revived in 1982 by writer Alan Moore in the pages of Warrior Magazine. Beginning in 1985, Moore's black-and-white serialized adventures were reprinted in color by Eclipse Comics under the new title Miracleman (as Marvel Comics objected to the use of "Marvel" in the title), and continued publication in the United States after Warrior's demise. Within the metatextual story line of the comic series itself, it was noted that Marvelman's creation was based upon Captain Marvel comics, by both Alan Moore and later Marvelman/Miracleman writer Neil Gaiman. In 2009, Marvel Comics obtained the rights to the original 1950s Marvelman characters and stories, obtaining the rights to the 1980s version and those reprints in 2013.

awseome book

>Eclipse

Original B&W Warrior or riot

I'm reading.

I recently discovered it and just finished issue 16, Alan Moore's conclusion. I may just wait for Marvel to finish Gaiman's run before I read issue 17.

It gets real.

OP, you might want to consider posting from a separate IP than the one that started the thread.

That way, you don't have to rely on other people to bump for you.

You don't really need too, outside some cool artistic stuff from Buckingham the 16 covers basically everything.

...

Thanks for the tip. I'll look for a proxy that allows me to post.

...

That's a shame. I heard YN comes back or something.

...

Yeah I can't find a reliable proxy site that allows me to bump the thread. Captcha either won't work or the reply box entirely won't pop up.

What can possibly go wrong?

...

...why is the moon orange and everything else purple?

If you have a smart phone you can use the personal hotspot feature and tether your PC for the 1st post and then switch back to your regular internet.

Thoughts so far?

I'll remember this, thanks.

...

...

fucked up old-school coloring

On one hand, it allows for dreamy pages like , but on the other hand, it can be downright inaccurate/confusing.

...

Did you buy the reprint Marvel just put out not that long ago? Any thoughts on the coloring?

Did you ever get that sinking feeling?

I don't think anyone is confused.

This is really cool stuff. Moore has a really compelling writing style, and the art is the tops. Please keep going!

...

So does MM take place in an alternate Marvel universe, or in something unrelated?

Don't worry about it and just enjoy the comic

It's time to shit your pants.

Read this UK brand were publishing Captain Marvel for 24 issues, lost the rights, and then made issue 25 Miracle Man a thinly viled rip off.

But if you remember all the characters of Watchmen were sort of rip offs of Charleston comic characters. Which is why this series shows us Moore testing things out.

Marvel later bought the rights to the dead brand.

Issue 2! Here we go!

...

I feel like you could TOTALLY make a Dover Boys reference in bottom middle panel.

...

I am reading this.

YOU SPILLED THE COFFEE!!!

I'd kill to see Hollywood attempt a Miracle Man movie. 1 to piss off Moore, and 2 to see if it's even possible.

...

...

...

I'd love for Marvel to get in on the more mature Western animated movies that DC seems to have a monopoly on nowadays.

I guess I'll finish the issue.

iv been meaning to take a look at miracleman thanks for the storytime OP

It's just a tough medium to make a mature story out of. X-Men was the closest one to getting the drama aspect right.

Well I hope these two issues sell you.

>Dicky. Dicky with the stupid name...

I'll never understand why anybody would name their kid Dick or Dicky.

Uh oh...I can't seem to post the last page of issue 2. The file size is too large. I had to shirnk it,

Welp, that's it folks. The first two issues of Moore's Miracle Man.

Very cool stuff. I remember all the fuss about Man of Steel ripping fight ideas from the Miracleman, and even from this issue, you can get the feeling of that action and momentum.

Moore's run concludes with the Battle of London, which is pretty infamous from the people who have read it.

It's basically the Man of Steel fight x3. Miracle Man picks up a car with a family inside and beats the villain with it.

Thoughts?

Big Ben...Has no time for crime.

>But if you remember all the characters of Watchmen were sort of rip offs of Charleston comic characters. Which is why this series shows us Moore testing things out.

So, in a way this is Marvels's Watchmen?

why is it that every anti-superhuman counter measure the government has is almost always an evil psychopath. id love to see an example of just a guy doing his job that doesn't get off on strangling superhuman threats with the intestines of a nearby baby.

thanks again op ill add it to the top of my list the only 2 things I knew about miracleman was that joke they made on the episode of the Simpsons that had Alan Moore on it and the fact that he breaks a kids neck

For me is the marvel knights sentry.

yeah, now looking back at it I can see it.
