I mean, i get cartoons are way more abstract design wise, but there has to be shit tier like f/a/gnime manages to produce

I had that exact book, yes. Got it at a school book fair.

What i mean is clear scams to get kids money, like this user here

Yes, there are How To's on drawing comics and cartoons

Chris Hart count? Good enough for Sup Forums, good enough for us.

WHO IS THIS EXTRAVAGANT BITCH
WHY IS SHE LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT. WITH THE LARGE GLASSY EYES, AND SHINY FACE. IT'S MAKING ME HAVE WEIRD FEELINGS IN MY BODY.

Yes, I purchased this at a school fair in, what, 6th grade? Katy Coope was my first "role model", because nothing else was willing to take them time and show me how to create, even being such a ploy for money. Pokemon was given to America for free and blew up, so everyone thought getting into anime was going to be the next bubble.

The eyes looking in opposite directions makes me wonder why they chose her for the cover. Was it supposed to be a joke? As in, "Americans can't into drawing anime"

Yes

How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. It has a really competent artist behind it, John Buscema, but it's basically a manual on how to make deadlines by being a hack

It all just reminds me when I received a book like this from my big brother as a Christmas-present and I was openly disappointed and snarky about it and hurt his feelings... I was the absolute worst piece of shit, back in the day.

I never understood that why cant west draw in anime style? Is it really that hard?

Every time I see these books I think of CWC, Dobson, and bad fetish art from 2008.

Avatar is a pretty close copy.

I remember when my dad's partner at the time gave me this book for my 9th birthday and I was stoked. Got me into drawing that style at the time but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone older than that.

dunno dude. the characters on the cover would actually work if one would ever make a family sitcom about them

There are some artists who can do it, but the vast majority always do it at least a little "off" so you can tell it's not Japanese.

There was a discussion about it here (and about the general differences between Western and Japanese animation):
pelleas.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=796&sid=948efab1b2ad4478a638ba0e8e9526b0

Well yeah avatar is pretty much only what did it right.

yea but the majority of the work is done in either japan or korea

Oh fuck I do too

That sure is a horse. Right?

I bought that book..

This is the most serious an in depth discussion on the matter and I have no idea why I haven't seen this analysed in this way before. Was there really much 'anti-anime' bias in western animation circles in the past?

WHAT

I can't wait to find out what the fuck 'Sexy Kleidung' is.

That was actually very cool. thanks user/.

God I hate this mofo! Anyone have that review of his book where he can't tell the difference between manwa and manga, and harasses some poor artist over it?

>Chapter 3: how to draw lewd nakadashi

I never understood the early 2000's obsession with discount anime in America

What the fuck am I looking at here?

>Was there really much 'anti-anime' bias in western animation circles in the past?

Is there anti japanese car bias in Detroit?

I can't see it.
And neither can she.

I owned that exact book as a teenager. Fuck me.

luscious.net/c/-/pictures/album/red-zone-how-to-draw-hentai-3_75144/page/1/?style=blog

Fuuuuuuuuuck! I got that same how to draw book at a 5th grade book fair. Back in like 2003. There was a second book too. How the shit a deviant art tier artist published a how to draw book I'll never know

>How to draw hentai #3
>#3

There's at least two more

WHAT IS HAPPENING

Fuck me, I had it too

I am glad that i never even tried to draw in anime and manga style back in day because i knew i could not do it.

That horse doesn't look like it's running... it's what a horse would look like after it's been beaten to death, lying on the ground.

I had a ton of the "How to Draw Manga" books.

The only truly useful ones were just reference books of costumery and weaponry/guns. The rest were not incredibly helpful for a newbie.

Most of the "How to draw manga/anime" books that came out in the US were really only meant to be quick cash-grabs in the late 90's/early 00's when everything Japanese was on the rise.

Any hack who thought "Anime style = Just draw eyes twice as big as normal, and huge spiky hair" tried to put out a how-to book at the time, hoping to make a few dollars off the craze.

Translation of German terms:

>Scharfe Mädchen
Hot(literally spicy) Girls
>Perverse Monster
Perverted Monsters
>Sexy Kleidung
Sexy Clothing

I have this exact book and another book exactly like it with a different cover

>The rest were not incredibly helpful for a newbie.
I came here to recommend these, they're a hell of a lot better than anything else here.
My brother got one years ago for something to fap to before he could buy actual porn, and my young mind was shocked that it was teaching basic anatomy and skeletal structure.

You'd be better off with a less contemporary how to draw book, but it's great as a supplement, and there's at least 50 volumes now.

Cheers, I'll make some notes later.

I remember getting this book and being kind of astonished at it...

It's almost less of a "how to draw manga" book, and more of a collection of ecchi shit.

I mean, there's like three full pages of how the draw a woman's crotch (not in explicit detail, but..) from almost every imaginable angle. And page after page of tits.

...

I need this.

Seconding.

Also all I know about Hart is that he's some guy who racked up art school student loans and decided to pay them off writing low quality how-to books?

He has a Youtube channel now
youtube.com/user/chrishartbooks/videos

Make a thread on /h/.
They will know.

no

I forgot if I got it at a book fair or a book order. I know the latter started my Shonen Jump phase.

>4th grade
>get issue of SJ because I'm into Yugioh
>discover Shaman King and YuYu Hakusho I didn't watch much anime on TV, also 4kids
>see previews of manga being bought over, remember thinking Death Note was intriguing and feeling like such a hipster when it took off
>grandpa also bought me like the first 16 volumes of Dragon Ball, probably because he's a Chinese studies professor
>parents barely let me play T-rated games but I get to see Bulma's tits and Goku's dick (also quite a bit of gore in SJ; dad asked if I was bothered by that Faust dude ripping Manta open)

Loomis

Say what you will about that book, it's orders of magnitude ahead of pretty much every other "how to draw" book you'd find at a book fair. At least it touched on basic figure composition and some perspective.

>get a "how to draw x" book
>it's just tracing and pic related, every fucking time.

I fapped to pic related so many fucking times goddamn.

Protip: everybody wants to hit their past self, especially from middle school. That period of life and that setting is practically a Gillette R&D lab.

>be a snarky "lol dog of the state" asshole to soldiers and policemen at middle school career fair
>retrospectively wish they kicked my smug ass, probably shifted politically a little out of cringe
Except for highway cops, those fuckers really are leeches.

I'd say even then you can kinda tell, the way it "moves" and is framed doesn't feel like most anime. Character designs also have a twinge of "not quite anime" to them, but that might be knowing it's western and every show having its touches.

>see Avatar when browsing Nick.com before it aired
>"pfft, it's just a "lol elements" wannabee anime"
>proceed to get utterly BTFO over the next 3 years

I'm glad TiVo fucked up recording Spongebob around Thanksgiving. Fucking thing fucked up recording the finale, though, even though I clearly checked that it was properly set earlier that same fucking day. Thank god for Nicktoons network.

Thank god for the internet, where I can look up tutorials of anything and everything.

My understanding of anime-western animation relations is that it's like that Arthur episode with the guest star jazz and classical musicians; the fans get worked up over how theirs is better than yours, but the actual creators mutually appreciate their approaches to the art. Hell, I recall John K saying some nice things about anime, and that fucker hates everything made after 1960.

On a more general note, it seems like the mid-late 2000's were really big on nerds getting pissy about Jap shit, though maybe I was just in the wrong corners of the internet (Youtube ranters and The Escapist forums circa 2009-2010).

Sexy clothes.

I still own this book. It even has a small section on drawing monster girls.

The imageboard crowd is extremely pissy about it right now, and even among "anime fans" most people seem to just hate everything and complain about even imaginary problems.

I dunno, sure the term "weeaboo" is still thrown around but it seemed to hold more invective back then. You'll see the occasional "go back to Sup Forums" poster now, but it feels like there was a lot more stigma, even among basement-dwelling NEETs on the internet, associated with being a Japanophile.

Anime fans hating everything is just how it's always been, like how Sup Forums always hated vidya. The only difference is that Sup Forums has a weird high-brow trash eater thing going on.

>and that fucker hates everything made after 1960.
Not really true. He likes quite a few modern cartoonists and their output.
It's just an impression you get of him if you only look for negative responses.

I remember my grade school library had a book called "Cartooning with The Simpsons" (or something).

Same. My parents must have spent like $400 on art stuff for me between age 12 and age 18.

Then I became a scientist.

I wonder if that means I failed or succeeded?

You ever walk through a Goodwill or discount/second hand book store and see all the lined up How to Draws and How to Writes and just think "did the person who drop these off get to a point where they didn't need them anymore, or did they just give up?"

The internet exists now, so the books aren't needed

Well Sup Forums has kinda been like that since forever and i know because i have been there since 2004. Sure somethings has been chanced but atleast elitism is still is there. Sup Forums probably dont understand whole elitism thing but it was for gaia back in day and now it is for reddit and MAL.

I know people still like to shit all over them, but truth be told, the books that actually came from Japan were the real deal and it's the western-made books you should avoid. I still find many of them quite useful, especially since many of the cash-in American-made books aren't anywhere as diverse as japan's offerings.

That book helped me discover that I was Bisexual. I masturbated to that shit several times, I wish I still had it.

...

There's plenty of ways to draw tits, like Raita's.
One of the things sticking to my mind is the section on drawing shower scenes, and how to properly draw water so it looks like it's streaming down instead of beading on the body.
