I wonder if the "Thace" that showed up at the end of episode 11 isn't the real one but Lotor shapeshifted to impersonate him using his Altean genes as a mole. Maybe we've never seen the real Thace, or maybe the first time it was him but afterwards it was Lotor.

For what it is, the writing in this show is surprisingly solid. They start off kind of too slapsticky for my liking, but thankfully they chill the fuck out with that after a while.
The alien empire is legitimately portrayed as threatening and vicious, and above all COMPETENT. The only time any of the Galra come off as bumbling is when we are seeing them in a remote hidden outpost that they are absolutely not expecting to be attacked, much less infiltrated.
The characters are simple but fun. Even Kanaan turns out to be a good character in the long run, just kind of a buffoon.
My one criticism is, weirdly enough, of the Voltron itself. The CG models for the lions and Voltron look fine, but their animation just looks weird to me. They never quite figure out how to make the Lions moving through space not look goofy and weird as hell.
Voltron, when he is flying, has a similar problem. They all just sort of drift around without any sense of weight or anything to them.

Depends where she actually knew the Paladins of the Voltron of old personally or not. Her father would have known them, but she might not.
That said, I think she knew. She certainly knew who Zarkon was, and even calls him a betrayer at one point. I think that she was trying to avoid telling the Paladin that Zarkon was a former Paladin.
At first because it wouldn't matter if Zarkon was goddamn dead like he was supposed to be. The whole plan with hiding the Lions for later hinged on the idea that eventually Zarkon would die of old age and the threat would pass, and the lions would be safe to use again.
Because the unfortunate fact is that Voltron can't beat Zarkon directly. Zarkon can just override control of the Black Lion himself, shattering Voltron basically at will and making sure no one can form Voltron but him as long as he is around.
I think Allura was hoping to find a way to beat Zarkon indirectly, or at the very least let Shirou build up enough of a connection with the Black Lion to hopefully maintain control.
But the Paladins are only sticking around because they were told that Voltron could beat Zarkon and save the universe. "Voltron can beat the Galra, but is totally powerless against Zarkon, I'm sure we can find a solution to that eventually" is a much harder sell.
