The Squad ride is almost over. Sad

Hey storytimer!

Ewing kills it again today, and I swear to god he probably has a cabinet just full of old No-Prize letters.

I think about how incredible he'd be if he was an editor. An editor with actual pull. Can you imagine a guy like him in Brevoort's position? Or Alonso's?

Rucka's Wondy continues to be wildly decompressed, and I'm not feeling the page styles and paneling. It's really feeling like a digital comic, some Injustice thing. Definitely not Rucka's usual delivery, which straddles a kind of middle ground between decompression and old Perez style density.

I have opinions on where Nick Spencer is going with Captain America, but less as a story, and more my growing wariness around Spencer at large. Got that hair on my back kind of feeling that he's not too far from a Waid style "I know black people better than black people" deal.

I would read all the Ostrander Squad he felt like writing

thank you DC Khomics

manta is a dick

Aquaman was nice especially with the new husbando

Wondy was slow but nice

Aquaman was pretty fun and I am amused at how fast Sup Forums took to Sark

Civil War is now Bendis stumbling around Marvel like Mr Magoo and Ewing is running around after him fixing everything before stuff breaks or Bendis hurts someone

Rocafort's art don't hurt

>I think about how incredible he'd be if he was an editor. An editor with actual pull. Can you imagine a guy like him in Brevoort's position? Or Alonso's?
Yeah, the dream is definitely Ewing in Brevoort or Bendis' shoes. Proof we're living in a broken world.

I didn't read anything today because I was busy with Good Stuff, but I did see someone say "WHY CAN'T EWING BE WRITING ALL OF THIS HE MAKES PEOPLE MAKE SENSE" about Carol

>Got that hair on my back kind of feeling that he's not too far from a Waid style "I know black people better than black people" deal.
Oh, EWW. I know the most woke black dude I follow on comics was not happy with his Sam writing pre-HYDRA stunt.

Hello Storyteller.

>THE BEAST WITHIN
youtu.be/OLHd4BQIiGw

Papercut would probably work too, though.

I hope husbando is not dead ;_;

Flash was good, set about establishing Barry so he's not a Silver Age blank slate. worried the plot is gonna be very standard

He did a flashback showing Carol recruit the team which had Carol talk about what happens when they aren't ready for the Apocalyptic threat and it's such a quick, simple way to make Civil War 2 make some sense. Impressive stuff

How about that new Cerebus?

Good old early 2000s

>Rucka's Wondy continues to be wildly decompressed, and I'm not feeling the page styles and paneling. It's really feeling like a digital comic, some Injustice thing.
Decompression was a mistake.

>Definitely not Rucka's usual delivery, which straddles a kind of middle ground between decompression and old Perez style density.
Honestly, I wonder if this is some kind of editorial directive. Rucka's usually better at drawing things out.

I'll read it

I still haven't read Cerebus though, I need to get on that

Perversely interested in how much alt-right shit we see about it.

that's a wonderful, wonderful image

it also needs, of course:

mind blowing. now i gotta read fast

h-he'll be fine

The sad thing is the explanation is simply that Ewing gives a shit about characters and Bendis doesn't.

Like, I'm of two minds of it. On the one hand, Sam's position as Cap would absolutely be political, especially in this current climate, and race'd absolutely be a factor. It should matter in the book, it should be explored and all that. But... the funeral especially feels like he's starting to reach beyond "this should be in the book" and into way beyond where someone like him should be writing. It feels too much like a centrist white columnist talking about how he knows all about racism. Especially since Spencer has shown he can't take crit from those on the left side of the position. Like remember when Bendis wouldn't accept any criticism from queer writers and fans about how he handled Iceman? Getting a bit of that.

Plus, his takedown of positions from the right aren't wrong, but just... hamhanded as hell. Very, very overwrought, over the top.

Also, he somehow fucking forgot about Rhodey's own family at his funeral? What the fuck. Ewing remembered that.

I will give him that Rage coming back as fighting paid off cops is a great move, but within the larger context of his run so far, it's got that "You are seriously going to reach too far soon" feeling to it.

He'll be okay, why would you introduce somebody so likeable just to off him? ;_; it just don't add up!

>Broly
I don't understand why people LOOOVED Broly so damn much. Honestly, that movie wasn't very good and Broly himself was barely a character.

But I guess we were all dumb teens at some point.

I actually really like the Rage/Night Thrasher dynamic from the New Warriors we read. I think you could run far with that in a lot of books (potentially plays into the new Nighthawk too).

No idea why atleast the pantera song fits perfect. RIP vic voice

youtube.com/watch?v=hXBrmlcADJA

Expanding on this, I think Ewing hit a good balance in his Mighty Avengers, like the moments with Adam and Luke, dealing with their race and their history in a way that felt right, but not going into that bad land of "I, the white writer, am the most qualified to write about race struggles".

Night Thrasher being back is great, Rage is great, I'd love for them both to be on a new New Warriors.

Of course, Marvel would have to promote it.

Is it even really suicide if the act takes 5 and a half years?

There's a joke in Cap about the new Inhuman being named Homer btw

he's a virgin who doesn't wear a shirt, you nignog

yeah, I'm down with pulling that

I need to read more Cerebus. After what I had to read in grad school, Sim's misogyny is just garden-variety/derivative shlock

I have a particular hateboner for cack-handed politics *even when I agree with them*

Lookin' at you, Tom Taylor

Suicide can feel like a lifetime.

BEST CAPE

The bit about Monica and black hair was pretty sly. And meta. Thank Dog that Rocafort loves to work with different hair textures and she's on-model in Ulty.

...

He was the responsible for the RICH PEOPLE GET IN THE ARK GO GO GO, right?

Also, Sim's misogyny STARTS garden variety, and then becomes truly fucking unbelievably out of this world. Like, his ideas about why women are the way they are gets up into "reptilians control the earth" level of complex batshit.

>using Boomerbutt as bait
Again, Amanda keeps giving him the shit jobs, and he totally deserves it.

Costa Verde, Santa Prisca, no real difference either way.

I know Rocafort gets shit on for cheesecake, but I do like him as an artist. He's done some great spreads in Ultimates.

Yep, and a straight-up "THE ONE PERCENT COMES RAINING DOWN" narration box

Even Sim's outre stuff is pretty Otto Weininger, except for the reptilians

f-for...

>DC Khomics
Is that what we call Khouri's stuff now?

unf unf unf

THE WALL

Like it's not that I really dislike that spread in Cap but maybe it just doesn't feel natural to me? i can take the buy of them knowing each other but it doesn't resonate (is it cause i'm a dumb white dude)

he started it himself, but yeah

Same here, I'm debating whether to screencap the relevant (safe-for-work) posts and send them to Abnett on twitter.

>He was the responsible for the RICH PEOPLE GET IN THE ARK GO GO GO, right?
yes

you should see the BITING SOCIAL COMMENTARY he made in Edge of Oblivion!

Missing a page in between here

No, it doesn't resonate, mostly because of the characters picked. Fury Jr especially feels like a weird pick - he doesn't feel like he'd get along with a lot of these dudes. Black people absolutely have spaces where they just talk among themselves, but spread across these many characters... it doesn't gel.

Again - Fury Jr. He barely knows a lot of these guys and would probably act to kill a bunch of them if SHIELD gave the say-so. What the fuck is he doing there?

What he does get right is that Sam and Rhodey didn't know each other a ton.

you should do it! I want new husbando Sark to live

>I have a particular hateboner for cack-handed politics *even when I agree with them*

That's me with Willingham. There's a time and a place for soapboxing and usually that time and place is not in my funny books.

fuck, sorry

PAGE 4

There's zero-effort cheesecake, and Rocafort is decidedly not zero-effort. You give him the freedom to do whatever with a female character's outfit and he comes up with some cool stuff, Mac and those Wakanda ladies are pure clothing porn.

I'll get on it then.

To be fair, most of them DO know each other, or at the very least Cage knows all of them.

Speaking of, did Cage bother talking to Misty about Danny, or is Spencer trying to make people forget where she came from?

now we're back, with page 11

Yeah Fury Jr has been a mistake from Go. Shoulda used Secret Wars to fix that

I keep hearing people go on about how great Cerebus is, and it just worries me. But then, this is Sup Forums.

But honestly, I can't even stand the thought of reading the damn thing because I don't want to read some whiny dude bitch about how girls stick waah waah waah. It's like, if I made a comic where I ranted for ages about why humans suck, you wouldn't want to read that because it's fucking annoying.

...

Agreed

to be fair that stuff doesn't show until issue 250 so you have a good amount to read and then just make a cut off point

I have the first phonebook, and the thing is, right from the start, which is a pretty bog-standard S&S story, there's a marvelous energy and style and quality to every aspect of it. I've read a whole lot of less compelling #1s.

Cerebus is 300 issues long dude, it's not solely Sim ranting about one topic

I mean yeah there's that one chunk where that does happen but that's not the majority of it

Cerebus starts mediocre, then it gets really good. Really, really good.

Then it not only gets bad, it gets CRAZY.

Take this interview with him and amplify it by 100, if you can imagine that.

avclub.com/article/dave-sim-13861

Reading PMIF user's Kunf Fu Storytime Extravaganza is making me dislike Bendis's saga of Black-Man (formerly Luke Cage) even more than I did before, which was already pretty thoroughly.

FUCK YEAH WALLER

#PoisonIvyLeague

Too bad, the OTP is eternal.

Maybe the answer is just it's a goddamn good comic until then cranky. I am so sick of you bitching about shit you haven't even read.

You know, the actual infamous rant was a text insert and not the actual comic, which was more even-handed.

can you say something about why?

god, this is so good

that early Conan rip off stuff is a slog for me but it's not bad

Luke needs his chain belt back.

It's basically that until it suddenly isn't. I was following the storytimes, and at least you get past the climax of the story before it goes all blah. It's like he hit a good point to stop and couldn't help not taking it.

It's totally derivative but it's really well done totally derivative so it's not surprisingly when it blossoms out into genuine invention. also, it's a subgenre I really enjoy.

Yo, there's a new fuggin Cerebus comic coming out!!!!!

Waller is the hero we need and deserve

Yeah i've heard complaints you can tell he's probably fucked up chaining himself to that 300 issue goal

i'm not a big s&s fan so i was going in with a handicap

Based Amanda.

Okay, you really need to show the Ivy League this page.

so did you guys see the IO9 Bendis interview wherein he's all "No, it's fine that we killed the black guy, isn't that what equality is about?"

Brief detour into TV land: Everything about that Poison Ivy casting for Gotham is coming off creepy as hell.

Bendis is a fucking hack who's risen too high, just like Joe Quesadilla

they shoulda done a smallville and just had her have an older sister

why don't you? or are you a fake keyboard warrior

what else; I've seen some grousing about Tec, but I think it has to do with what Batfamily Relationships you're invested in, and Tynion definitely has his (since I Don't Care, it's interesting to watch)

good deliberate creepy or inadvertent creepy?

I feel like some ice cold water is finally splashing on the faces of the Bendis brigade. This is who he's always been, how has it taken this long to get a mainstream face and reaction on that?

Good creepy or bad?

And I'm tired of you getting mad at me having opinions and free will.

Oh no, someone doesn't want to read some shit written by a sexist douchebag. What a tragedy! That Cranky, he's such a big ol meanie! :(

Cry the fuck more.

>I HAVE BLACK KIDS, I CAN'T DO ANYTHING RACIST

Not that user, but they replaced a young girl with a sexy woman and are doing some age-up bullshit in the story.

Oh shit, we Hotline Miami
youtu.be/xAM6mG6BWjw

Why do you always make everything about you?

>what else; I've seen some grousing about Tec, but I think it has to do with what Batfamily Relationships you're invested in, and Tynion definitely has his (since I Don't Care, it's interesting to watch)
I've seen people mostly happy about today's issue, apparently they are happy that Bruce and Tim actually had a conversation and I've seen some people happy that Tim/Steph is a thing again which is silly because Tim is clearly either gay or asexual

Oh yeah. I also saw him respond to the interviewer's tweets and saying that there were some typos and things like that that "totally" change the meaning of his responses, which smacks of when he and Slott would say similar things about leaked issues and moments that turned out to be... exactly what they looked like.

I really wanted the interviewer to go, "So, hypothetical: Would you kill Miles as a tragic moment for, I don't know, Peter Parker and Kaine?" Or just push him, at all. But I feel like 1. He wants to give Bendis some benefit of the doubt and 2. Knows that if you start pressing a writer about this stuff, they get very, very defensive.

I notice a lot of writers when you go "Hey, this thing you wrote is kinda racist/homophobic/whatever" and they immediately go "I didn't mean that at all how dare you I'm no bigot I didn't join any hate groups" blah blah blah, kind of ignoring that even the most well meaning people can write and do ignorant shit, because we just don't know things or we absorb hateful shit. I'm surprised nobody popped me in the mouth for some of the shit I said back in high school.

Lots of "I'm not a racist" and having to explain, nobody said you were, but you're writing racist cliches, unintentionally.

Well, I'm tired of you being tired of things cranky. I'm exhausted.

Yeah seriously, her name wasn't even Pamela Isley or just Pamela, was it? Could've just had that actress be pre exiting Ivy's older sister named Pamela.

I'm still fucking pissed they named her "Ivy Pepper" for fucks sake.

Is the age up thing just for her character or for the story in general?

Spencer seems to be tweeting about Sam's thing was at a public function and not the more private burial fwiw speaking of damage control

It really is about time, and the utterly slapdash nature of this thing has hit enough different fanbases that they can't just be dismissed or have it papered over with 'BUT WOLVERINE AND SPIDER-MAN ARE ON THE TEAM THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL'

How is Clint going to be shat on? Betting pool time--submit your guesses, the more specific the better, winner gets storytime of your choice (within length reason)

28 year old cast to play a 19 year old and possibly flirt and be sexual with a 15 year old on screen creepy.

The comics industry (or at least Big Two) is also vidya-tier in how it'll close off on journos I think, isn't it?

Some dude on youtube starting doing in-depth page analysis for comics and that's comics criticism I'd really like to see more of. It's too rare for critics to tackle art properly.
