>Elena of Avalor is an upcoming animated spin-off series of the Disney Junior animated show, Sofia the First, that will premiere July 22, 2016.
>Disneyphiles know all about Mulan, an Asian warrior, and Tiana, an African-American entrepreneur. They are even familiar with Ariel, the former mermaid. But they have never had a Latina character among the company’s roster of “Princess” characters, which also includes Aurora, Cinderella and Snow White. When Elena arrives, the company will have a character that could cultivate broader appeal among a consumer niche that is growing rapidly in the United States. Disney Channel will in the fall air a special TV movie titled “Elena and the Secret of Avalor,” which explains how Elena was imprisoned for decades in a magical amulet and eventually set free by Princess Sofia of Enchancia – the title character of Disney’s popular “Sofia The First” series.
>“Elena” stories are expected to incorporate influences from Latin and Hispanic cultures through architecture, traditions, food and customs. Magic, mythology, folklore and music also play an important role, with each episode featuring original songs spanning an array of Latin musical styles including mariachi, Latin pop, salsa, banda and Chilean hip hop. The show’s theme song is performed by Gaby Moreno, a Latin Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist, and Elena’s anthem, “My Time,” is performed by Aimee Carrero, who will also give voice to the main character.
I look forward to how seeing they distill all these different influences into some sort of Disneyfied, homogenous spic culture.
Kayden Smith
>Latina princess
Daughter of the head of a heroin cartel that smuggles dope across the US border? I'd watch that.
Colton Lee
>at least passable to good character designs >really terrible stories To be really honest, most Sofia episodes felt like torture because of the dumb stories. Peppa Pig was a much more enjoyable show, surprisingly, when I was babysitting.
Xavier Stewart
>Princess of Argentina
Hudson Moore
Really? I think it's better than most preschool shows because it actually has a story.
IIRC, she's Hispanic but not Latina A lot of people don't realize there's a difference
Camden Russell
The uniforms seem to be inspired by the Brazillian Empire, which ironically fell because they didn't want a girl to inherit the throne.
Gabriel Ortiz
>TFW still waiting on the flood of Rule 34 fan art to come. I think we got kind of spoiled with the influx of the 'Frozen' stuff.
Parker Campbell
Thanks for clearing it up because I only saw some articles about her being Latina.
Julian Gray
Don't cry for me Argentina, the truth is i never left you..
Evan Thomas
>never had a Latina character among the company’s roster of “Princess” characters
David Thomas
Yzma was never a princess.
Juan Garcia
>Princess Elena's journey began long ago when her parents and kingdom were taken from her by the evil sorceress, Shuriki. Elena bravely faced the sorceress to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel, and grandparents but in the process, her magical amulet pulled her inside its enchanted jewel, saving her life but imprisoning her at the same time. Decades later, Princess Sofia of Enchancia discovers the truth about the amulet she has worn since joining her royal family and sets out to restore Elena to her human form and help her return to the Kingdom of Avalor.
How fucking broken is this thing? Is it an infinity gem?
Bentley Howard
Wait so did the evil sorceress take over the kingdom for decades? Is the series going to be about Elena's campaign to gather allies and take back her kingdom? Or did her sister ascend to the throne because of her sacrifice?
Jaxon Rogers
>spin-off series >TV movie Don't care anymore. Dead before it even hit the floor.
Andrew Bailey
What about Kuzco then?
Hudson Murphy
She looks like she was designed as a Descendents character related to Esmeralda.
Asher Johnson
I, for one, welcome princess Yugioh.
John Jones
I love how "Latina" is meant to apply to "American of Latino/Hispanic descendence" and not anybody in particular south of the border...
Owen Thompson
>implying all the Latin Americans aren't exactly the same
Ayden Mitchell
My point is, this is just Americans wanking themselves. All attempts at "Diversity" are. Tiana is African-American. not African, and Moana is Hawaiian, which in practice makes her American as well.
I guess it says a lot of the "Diversity" meme that has been so in vogue in the US in the past few years.
>mfw "Latina Princess"
Alexander Jackson
there are the disney descendants, but I guess they are sort of anti-princesses
Ethan Peterson
i'm looking forward to fanworks of badass action princess.
>mfw By the end she'll be queen
Josiah Baker
I think it was like a heroic sacrifice? only they didn't die wooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo!!!
David Russell
huh.. okay, something not for toddlers maybe.. >sjw shit sjw shit sjw shit eh i cant blame them for pandering to the majority in this case
Owen Long
i hope this does well so we can get more in the vein of aladdin animated series. i want my asskicking beauty and the beast spinoff dammit
Logan Thompson
I feel like this is going to do as well as the older Dora did.
I work at toys r us... I don't see this doing well.
Jack Harris
Has a loli, mite b gud
Parker Sanchez
Oh shit, will she be in Infinity War?
Episode with Thanos when?
Jaxson Watson
Neither of the or the movie in general resemble how the Incas actual looked like. The sad part is that the conceptar actualy nail the actual Incan culture pretty good.
Mason Ross
On key aspect to understand Hispanic American Culture is that there is a significant hole on the identity of said culture, the America was a diverse group of nations and empires with difference language before the conquistador came.
During the Spanish conquest that lasted decades there was a clear and methodic effort to erase said culture from the native population. Partially in an attempt to "civilize the savage" but also as a tool to maintain control over the people. Language were outlaw and replace with spanish most of the natives where evicted from their land a relocated in spanish settlements where they where converted to cristianity, given a new name a put on the service of an europan lord, general or priest.
Even after all that time the few stories, and traditions that survive are hold dearly to the Latin-american population. Showing a need to see said stories on their own pop culture.
Elena of avalor doesn´t show the real history or culture of latin-america its just a cynic attempt to cash in on the latin population, by making the same disney princess template with a pseudo mexican color swap to sell some dolls. Without
>to incorporate influences from Latin and Hispanic cultures And by that I'm sure they mean "generic bland urban American stereotypes disguised as mestizo". Lots of cactuses and a sombreros. Yay.
>Chilean hip hop How does that work? Can you even make a song out of "oe qliao weon po q flaite ktm XD"?
Henry Cox
Europeans in a European setting with brown skin and an accent. As everybody suspected.
Jack Allen
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Dominic Allen
>Literally a latina princess Pretty mild tbhfam, a peasant girl who was descendant of like an Aztec princess or goddess and had crazy magic powers would've been cooler
James Phillips
That was fast. I'm actually impressed.
Carter Adams
Digusting doctor videogames: Rule 35 of the internet?
Look at the abilities list. That thing is OP as fuck.
Nicholas Robinson
Disney owns Marvel. Disney owns Sofia the First.
Calling it now: The Amulet of Avalor is one of the Infinity Stones
Michael Jones
To be fair, think of it like this: You know those annoying white people who like to brag about being "1/16th Indian" for PC points and college admission? That's basically most mestizos.
David Foster
opened that pic an visibly jumped
she's got the thousand yard stare
Tyler Campbell
>announcer pronounces her name right
>Eleana herself pronounces it in the most American way possible
The Soul Stone probably, since it contains the souls of all the Disney Princesses.
Jace Foster
It seems to just transmigrate them through time and space.
Anthony Lee
There's a theory they're auto-generated by some supercomputer.
Aaron Smith
Yeah, but.. Who cares? When your culture has been feeding you images of European castles and princesses and tales, then that become the things you fantasize about.
Wyatt Torres
Nice bullshit you got there. Bet you think Dilma is getting impeached because she is a woman, right?
Alexander Nelson
>mexican culture themed princess >she isn't Día de los Muertos styled
one job
Evan Gonzalez
>All Latin American culture is Mexican
I'm pretty sure most Mexicans didn't even celebrate Día de los Muertos before the government made it a thing.
Alexander Williams
Wait... Is she promising a Reconquista?
Andrew Clark
Looks like.
Robert Young
Wonder if it was El Dorado that made them chicken out?
Bentley Collins
>it grants magic abilities for doing good >it makes curses for people being dishonest and doing evil >people keep trying to steal it for evil purposes Literally why? Even better, why bother keeping it away from those people? Sofia could've just handed over the amulet when they first showed up and let it take care of the problem.
Caleb Foster
Pixars already working on that.
Joshua Green
Someone missed out of Book of Life.
Samuel Jenkins
>Latina princess Who does she represent? From Mexico to Argentina there are a fuckton of different cultures and people.
Ryan Nguyen
>I'm pretty sure most Mexicans didn't even celebrate Día de los Muertos before the government made it a thing. Then you would be wrong ese, is a strong tradition here, only because it's not commercialized and people don't make themed parties to get drunk doesn't mean is not celebrated, the celebration is mostly in your house making an altar and visiting the deceased one in the graveyard.
William Myers
>Who does she represent? Fantasy middle-Americans with a tan See
Lucas Brooks
There is only northern Mexican mestizo culture, user. Everything else is an extension with very minor variations.
Adam White
>The uploader has not made this video available in your country >I'm Mexican Kek
David Jackson
>Originally, the Day of the Dead as such was not celebrated in northern Mexico, where it was unknown until the 20th century because its indigenous people had different traditions. The people and the church rejected it as a day related to syncretizing pagan elements with Catholic Christianity. They held the traditional 'All Saints' Day' in the same way as other Christians in the world. There was limited Mesoamerican influence in this region, and relatively few indigenous inhabitants from the regions of Southern Mexico, where the holiday was celebrated. In the early 21st century in northern Mexico, Día de Muertos is observed because the Mexican government made it a national holiday based on educational policies from the 1960s; it has introduced this holiday as a unifying national tradition based on indigenous traditions.
>Northen Mexico You know what is considered northern Mexico to begin with? It's the states on the border with USA, they always had a different culture because it mostly Spaniards and later Mennonites settled there, only a few native groups live on the north and they don't go out of the mountain range.
Dia de muertos has always been celebrated in the south aka where most of the population of Mexico is, people around here also worship the death reaper but you don't see that acknowledged by the government as a official religion do you?
The government did that because those states are too close to America and do not want them to become a door for more Americanism invading this country.
Ryan Sullivan
People on Sup Forums actually give a shit about Disney Jr cartoons? I thought these were for babies. i-im not some anime-watching Avatar hyping edge-weeb or anything, but i still am quite curious
Hunter Cox
I'm not even Mexican. But what said
>"B-B-BUT MUH DIVERSITY! MUH LATINOS!!" Latinos in the US are to the rest of Latin America what Chicanos are to Mexicans.
Perhaps what puts me off "Diversity" the most is how in the end it's just Americans trying to force their brand of Social Justice on the rest of the world. Their liberals know they can't quite cash in on their usual discourses when in third world countries, so they now attempt to work them over before they can take over population and infrastructure there.
Nicholas Rivera
>The government did that because those states are too close to America and do not want them to become a door for more Americanism invading this country.
The Mexican revolution was the establishment of an anti-Catholic, Freemason government supported by the US under the pretext of "liberating" Mexico from Spain.
Justin Johnson
Down with the papist pigs, I say! Long live the Patriarchy!
Noah Hernandez
With Americanism I mean, American pop culture, there are retards on the north wanting to celebrate thanks giving and Halloween, introducing english words to the daily life.
Basically the (central) government is protecting our culture so American culture doesn't spread from the north since the north share little with the south culturally but are kinda influential for being the biggest states in the country.
Brayden Clark
Honestly, I was willing to give Sofia a try. I've been surprised by Disney before. Sofia wasn't a surprise.
I'd be willing to give this a chance as well, although honestly, I'm expecting just more Sofia with slightly older characters.
Charles Thomas
This is on the main Disney channel.
Bentley Howard
>white girl >brown hair blue eyes >born of white mother with brown hair blue eyes named Miranda >living in ye olde britain with a fancy name and magic >literally one of the whitest names except they spelled it with an "f" this time >"GUYS SHE'S HISPANIC" No she's fucking not
Jacob Ward
Hispanic means "from Spain" or "Spanish ancestry".
Hudson Johnson
A lot of us have nieces, nephews, or even kids of our own. You kind of get used to seeing the shows after awhile.
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is garbage. It doesn't even have easter eggs or shoutouts to old stuff. Jake and the Neverland Pirates is "good." It's not cringe-y to watch but nothing spectacular. Sofia the First is the girl equivalent of Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Don't give a shit about the others.
They also play Disney movies sometimes, usually on Sundays. It was cool to see A Goofy Movie on TV, I think Disneys starting to embrace it again (since Max is appearing at Disneyland again).
Brayden Barnes
is there a reupload somewhere?
videos is regionlocked for mexico...
Jace Brown
Make a Latino Pricess movie, the trailer is regionlocked to Mexico.
The comedy writes itself.
Isaac Morales
>Two brown princesses in the same year.
My dick thanks you, Disney.
Nolan Cook
You think this looks white? She's darker than Sofia. Sofia's biological father is said to have been white, though (according to the creator).
>literally one of the whitest names except they spelled it with an "f" this time Sofia is an incredibly common name for Latina girls. Yes, spelled with an "f."
That's not what they said. They said Sofia's mother is from a place called Galdiz, a made-up land that's supposed to have Latin influences. Sofia isn't Hispanic or Latin American because those things don't exist in her fantasy land.
Though I'm kind of curious why Elena gets a pass on that concept when she's from the made-up land of Avalor and the two series are connected.
Andrew Garcia
It's regionlocked here in Peru as well.
Aaron Ross
>a made-up land that's supposed to have Latin influences
Correction, it's supposed to be inspired by Spain, but again, the concept of a Hispanic doesn't exist in Sofia.
Zachary Foster
>They said Sofia's mother is from a place called Galdiz, a made-up land that's supposed to have Latin influences. Sofia isn't Hispanic or Latin American because those things don't exist in her fantasy land. And since ti's clearly European-looking, the land is going to have to be based on Spain. Unless Disney wants to create a canon where colonialism exists.
Which I wouldn't mind, honestly. But obviously the Mouse is never going to do something as ballsy as that.
Cameron Cruz
Monarchies in Latin America tend not to end very well
Robert Sanchez
Fucking Freemasons ruining another country.
Adrian Cooper
There was a region free version a couple of days año but I can´t find it anymore, disney probably took it down. from memory I can tell you It looks like the standar disney european kingdom just some shades of darker that usual.
There is some "zorro" style characters too and an stupid looking winged jaguar.
We've actually never seen Galdiz. Sofia and her mother were already living in Enchancia when the show started. But it's true Galdiz is supposed to be fantasy Spain.
Gavin Fisher
Probably they mean Anita Tijoux, since she is known enough to be featured in Breaking Bad.
Actually there are a coupe more of good artists performing in the States from time to time.
Jordan Johnson
I like Sofia, I think it could get away with being on normal Disney, but it does have a lot of straightforward "this is good/bad" episodes for the Jr. crowd, as well as some cringey one episode side-characters (one episode has seal people with surfer accents). But there's continuity and some of the kids do develop a little (without being reset in later episodes). The songs aren't bad, especially with the cast it has, and it has rather nice art direction.
It's a very simple show, it's on Disney Jr. after all, but it doesn't feel like it thinks its kid audience is dumb. That's just my opinion, though.
Jaxon Jenkins
>Why does the white guy looks like a middle age John Smith? >Why does the white guy looks like a character from descendants? >What the fuck is that parrot cheetah thing? >why does the royal family look like an stereotypical mexican family eating in a modern looking kitchen? >What the fuck is that parrot cheetah thing? >Why is the girl fighting Zorro? >Why is there a force ghost fox? >WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT PARROT CHEETAH THING?
