WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN: THE DCEU

MAN OF STEEL (2013)

>Warner Bros Pictures greenlit the reboot in order to retain the rights to certain aspects of the character during the legal battle with the heirs of Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Several directors and writers pitched their ideas for the story, among them Mark Millar, who advocated for a six movie sage chronicling Superman's entire life from his birth to his death, tentatively directed by Matthew Vaughn.

>Millar envisioned the first movie set entirely in Krypton and ending with Kal-El's rocket ship crash-landing in Smallville, Kansas; and the final movie culminating with Superman as the last man alive, having outlived all of his loved ones, left alone in an Earth ravaged as the Sun is on the verge of going supernova, like Krypton's once did. As it becomes red, stripping Superman of his powers, Superman embraces death and perishes when the Sun explodes and consumes the Earth.

>David S. Goyer created a concept for a modern, realistic approach on Superman while mapping out the plot of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES with Christopher Nolan, who then advocated in his favor with WB, leading to Goyer being selected as the writer. Nolan's brother and collaborator Jonathan Nolan was initially expected to direct the movie, but declined as he felt the project was too risky for his directorial debut.

>Ben Affleck was approached to direct the movie, but declined.

>Matt Reeves, Duncan Jones and Jonathan Liebesman were the frontrunners to direct the movie before Zack Snyder was hired. Darren Aronofsky was in advanced talks beforehand, but WB parted ways with him because he requested to revise Goyer's draft to his liking, and it required a bigger timetable than WB could afford in order to retain the rights.

>Although Goyer is the only credited writer, Snyder's collaborator Kurt Johnstad reportedly heavily doctored the script based on Snyder's notes.

>In early drafts, the war on Krypton was longer, including a segment in which Zod besieges Jor-El's observatory with robotic hounds, which are fought off by Kelex in a massive combat exoskeleton.

>In early drafts, Zod would unleash Faora and Nam-Ek upon China and the Middle East, respectively, and they'd level entire cities as a demonstration of Zod's power.

>In early drafts, Zod would be exiled to the Phantom Zone alongside his men, but Snyder and Goyer believed that having Superman be forced to kill him would be a more effective ending as it'd evidence the origin of Superman's no-kill rule. Nolan initially objected to the idea of killing Zod, but Snyder and Goyer ultimately persuaded him.

>WB executives initially objected to the idea of Lois Lane finding out Superman's identity early as, as they believed the Lois-Clark-Superman dynamic was important to the mythos, but Goyer advocated that it be removed as it was not fitting for a modern setting.

>Rough cuts began with Clark Kent arriving at the Daily Planet and developed the narrative through three interlocked sets of flashbacks, one in Krypton, one of Clark's childhood, and one of Clark's adulthood and transformation into Superman. Audiences found this confusing, so the Krypton segments were condensed into a prologue, the childhood flashbacks were trimmed, and the narrative was made linear.

>Snyder originally envisioned an after-credits scene where a shipment of Kryptonite would be delivered to Wayne Manor, but Nolan convinced him it was unnecessary.

>Joe Manganiello, Matthew Goode, Colin O'Donoghue and Armie Hammer auditioned for the role of Superman before Henry Cavill was cast. Snyder favored Manganiello, but he couldn't commit due to scheduling conflicts with TRUE BLOOD.

>Cavill had been cast as Superman once before in SUPERMAN: FLYBY, a reboot written by J.J. Abrams and directed by McG, set to be released in 2004, that was ultimately scrapped due to creative differences between the studio and the director. The cast also included Scarlett Johansson as Lois Lane, Shia LaBeouf as Jimmy Olsen, Christopher Walken as Perry White, Robert Downey Jr. as Lex Luthor, Anthony Hopkins as Jor-El and Joel Edgerton as Ty-Zor, Superman's evil brother.

>Anne Hathaway was offered the role of Lois Lane, but declined in favor of playing Catwoman in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Emmy Rossum, Charlotte Riley, Dianna Agron, Margot Robbie, Alexis Knapp, Kaya Scodelario, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kristen Bell, Lake Bell and Mila Kunis all auditoned before the role came down to Olivia Wilde and Amy Adams, who was ultimately hired. Adams had previously auditioned for the role of Lois in SUPERMAN: FLYBY.

>Daniel Day-Lewis was heavily pursued to play Jor-El, but declined. Sean Penn and Clive Owen were also considered.

>Connie Nielsen was originally slated to play Lara Lor-Van, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts and was briefly replaced by Julia Ormond, who also dropped out, leading to Aylet Zurer being cast.

>Bruce Greenwood, Dennis Quaid, Michael Biehn and Kurt Russell were considered for Jonathan Kent before Kevin Costner was cast.

>Julianne Moore, Jodie Foster, Sela Ward and Elisabeth Shue were considered for Martha Kent before Diane Lane was cast.

>Diane Kruger, Rosamund Pike, Kate Mara and Gal Gadot were considered for Faora before Antje Traue was cast. Snyder favored Gadot, but she couldn't commit due to her pregnancy.

>Viggo Mortensen was heavily pursued to play General Zod, but declined, and Michael Shannon was cast.

>it'd evidence the origin of Superman's no-kill rule

then why the fuck didn't they try to show that in BvS?

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (2016)

>Warner Bros Pictures originally greenlit a direct sequel to MAN OF STEEL, written by Goyer and directed by Snyder. The project was later retooled into a crossover between Superman and Batman as part of WB's ongoing effort to launch their own cinematic universe to rival Marvel's. During the brief period in which it was MAN OF STEEL 2, Snyder had plans to use Lex Luthor and Metallo as the antagonists.

>Josh Brolin and Ben Affleck were offered the role of Batman, but both declined. Joe Manganiello, Matthew Goode, Scott Adkins, Max Martini and Richard Armitage auditioned for the role before Affleck later reconsidered and brought along his contributor Chris Terrio to rewrite Goyer's script, which he was not satisfied with, requiring the movie to be delayed from summer 2015 to early 2016 to accomodate the rewrites.

>Early drafts ended with Batman assembling the Justice League, with Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg making brief appearances as a team, but the idea was later scrapped in favor of detailing the formation of the Justice League in their own movie.

>Early drafts included an appearance by the Joker, which was scrapped once the character was slated to appear in SUICIDE SQUAD.

>Olga Kurylenko, Elodie Yung and Emily Ratajkowski auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman before Gal Gadot was cast.

>Joaquin Phoenix was heavily pursued to play Lex Luthor, but declined. Matt Damon, Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington and Bryan Cranston were also potential choices before Snyder changed his plans for the character.

>Jesse Eisenberg was originally approached to play Jimmy Olsen, as Snyder planned to cast a well-known actor in the role so the audience would be surprised when the character is unceremoniously killed off early in the movie, but Eisenberg declined. Snyder felt Eisenberg's disdainful attitude was so powerful he changed the entire script to accomodate for a new interpretation of Luthor that'd play to Eisenberg's strengths. Michael Cassidy played Olsen.

>Christopher Nolan objected to Superman's death, but Snyder ultimately persuaded him that it was necessary to the development of the DCEU. Early drafts featured Superman leaving Earth rather than sacrificing himself to stop Doomsday.

>Adam Driver auditioned for the role of Barry Allen before Ezra Miller was cast.

>Michael B. Jordan was approached to play Cyborg, but declined in favor of playing the Human Torch in FANT4STIC.

SUICIDE SQUAD (2016)

>Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer were approached to play Amanda Waller before Viola Davis was cast.

>Tom Hardy was originally cast as Rick Flagg, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with THE REVENANT. Jake Gyllenhall, Joel Edgerton, Luke Evans and Jon Bernthal auditioned for the role before Joel Kinnaman was cast.

>Jai Courtney auditioned for the role of Deadshot before being cast as Boomerang.

>Cara Delevigne auditioned for the role of Harley Quinn before being cast as the Enchantress.

>In 2011, WB planned to launch a standalone SUICIDE SQUAD movie written by Justin Marks, centered on the team being assembled by the United States government to stop a group of meta-human terrorists known as "The Onslaught" from rescuing their leader, a living weapon of mass destruction known as "Cobalt". The team was comprised of Deadshot, Boomerang, Vixen, Mindboggler, Javali, Multiplex and Blockbuster, and led by Rick Flagg and Amanda Waller.

>Although the project was scrapped, there were plans to cast Jason Statham as Deadshot and Zoe Saldana as Vixen, with CCH Pounder playing Waller, whom she had previously voiced in JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITIED.

WONDER WOMAN (2017)

>Angelina Jolie, Kathryn Bigelow, Catherine Hardwicke, Mimi Leder, Karyn Kusama, Julie Taymor and Tricia Brock were considered to direct WONDER WOMAN before Michelle McLaren was cast. However, she dropped out due to creative differences and was replaced by Patty Jenkins.

>Liam Hemsworth and Alexander Skarsgard were considered for the role of Steve Trevor.

>Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman were offered the role of Queen Hyppolita, but declined.

JUSTICE LEAGUE (2017)

>JUSTICE LEAGUE was originally envisioned as a two-parter, with both installments directed by Zack Snyder, and with the same overall tone of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but the movie's overwhelmingly negative reception and disappointing performance at the box office led to plans being changed into one movie, with a lighter and more upbeat tone, although the movie reportedly still sets up a direct sequel.

>Gugu Mbatha-Raw was linked to the role of Mera in JUSTICE LEAGUE before Amber Heard was cast.

>Alona Tal and Abbey Lee Kershaw have been linked to the role of Black Canary in JUSTICE LEAGUE.

THE FLASH (2018)

>Phil Lord & Chris Miller were slated to write and direct THE FLASH, but dropped out in favor of STAR WARS: HAN SOLO, writing only a story, with Seth Grahame-Smith taking over writing and directing duties. Smith later dropped out due to creative differences and has been replaced by Rick Famuyiga.

AQUAMAN (2018)

>Jeff Nichols and Noam Munro were considered to direct AQUAMAN before James Wan was hired. Nichols also reportedly wrote a version of the script, but it was scrapped in favor of a draft penned by Kurt Johnstad.

I'm conflicted. All of this sounds amazing, and I would love to read a comic about it, buuuut....I'm not sure if it is the movie franchine that would better representantes Supes and work. Maybe it could work better as a mini-serie.

Six movies is too much, and nobody would watch 2 hours of Krypton.

>it was not fitting for a modern setting.
>that does not make a god dam lick of sense

THE FAGGOTS don't know that people love campy heroes, even more of it is charming and has personalitty, there is a reason for why people used to live Lois and Clark relationship and it hardly changed.

What I'm seeing is how POISONOUS Snyder and Goyer influence is. This universe will hardly work with Snyder in charge, the faggot thought that killing an important side character of the mythos at the first minutes would be "fun" Instead of using hilarious to create meanfull relationships with his MC.

We could have had this instead of the new era of capekino.

That's really nothing to cry about.

That why I said that a show with Six episodes would be better.

One hour each, by HBO. I think that could work.

Colbert just 'translated' the title of DC's new summer flick

>Snyder felt Eisenberg's disdainful attitude was so powerful he changed the entire script to accomodate for a new interpretation of Luthor that'd play to Eisenberg's strengths.

Sweet Jesus

I'm usually one of the Nolan's loudest bashers, but thank you, based Nolan.

I'm glad Snyder has so much creative control. Everyone else is just dragging him down. There's no storyteller on his level in the industry right now.

Faggot.

This almost sounds like Snyder doesn't fucking understand normal human behavior.

Or has a boner for Eisenberg

NO

THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME ZACK SNYDER

THANK YOU SO MUCH

You see?

There are worse evils out there. Be thankful.

>fought off by Kelex in a massive combat exoskeleton.
That would have been ABAP.

>Nolan initially objected to the idea of killing Zod, but Snyder and Goyer ultimately persuaded him.
"Persuaded him."

>The cast also included Scarlett Johansson as Lois Lane, Shia LaBeouf as Jimmy Olsen, Christopher Walken as Perry White, Robert Downey Jr. as Lex Luthor, Anthony Hopkins as Jor-El and Joel Edgerton as Ty-Zor, Superman's evil brother.
lol
That would have been crazy.

Damn Mark Miller's Supes sounds hella depressing. And the Earth won't be consumed by the earth for billions of years I believe and Supes isn't immortal. So what the fuck.

And I hope the Black Canary thing is true.

>In early drafts, Zod would be exiled to the Phantom Zone alongside his men, but Snyder and Goyer believed that having Superman be forced to kill him would be a more effective ending as it'd evidence the origin of Superman's no-kill rule.
I will never understand how the fuck that is supposed to make any sort of sense.

But then again, I don't know what to expect from the 12 year old retard trapped in a 50 year old's body that made this.

Is to fair to say BvS is just mediocre at best and a lot of shit that it gets is fueled by anticipation and expectations we had? Dont get me wrong, it still has some glaring issues, but Id rather watch it again over Fanfourstic or ASM2. Also if the Jesse/Jimmy thing is true than fuck Snyder, learn how to lose an actor

I think Superman has an extended lifespan, but nowhere near that extent.

It is in some iterations.

No, BvS is genuinely bad on almost every level, from script to technical aspects to the dull/disinterested performances.

Nah, BvS is absolute perfection on every level. 10/10 masterpiece, plot, visuals, sounds, every technical aspect, acting, etc. All of it was done amazingly well.

I know this is a meme but its starting to get old now

>Joaquin Phoenix was heavily pursued to play Lex Luthor, but declined. Matt Damon, Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington and Bryan Cranston were also potential choices before Snyder changed his plans for the character.

Holy shit you can't be fucking serious. Source on these? There's no way Snyder's really THAT much of a retarded fucking hack. There's just no way.

Johns wrote him having a nightmare of outliving the human race, I think and leaving the empty earth with a backpack full of stuff like the Star Rod.
Morrison wrote him outliving all of his friends and leaving earth to wander the universe for a few thousand years before coming back and making his home in the heart of the sun for about 800 centuries, I think.

The truth isn't just a meme, buddy.

>Oprah Winfrey to play the WALL

WHY DIDN'T THIS HAPPEN?!

Did he have a hard on for Jesse or something? This isnt like courting Cranston or DiCaprio or something, this is fucking Jesse Spaghetti. Did he owe him money? None of this makes sense. Its like he wanted a set of actors but didnt give a damn about how they might work

>Adam Driver auditioned for the role of Barry Allen before Ezra Miller was cast

well yeah. how would he run fast with those two parachutes attached to his head?

That's too damn much and why would he even live that long? It doesn't make sense biological because he is organic and everything has a life span.
If anyone should outlive everyone else its Diana.

>greenlit the reboot in order to retain the rights
Pretty much the ultimate red flag with capeshit movies it seems

The tell-all book that comes out about the making of Batman v Superman is going to be fantastic.

Kryptonian biology is a hell of a thing, apparently.
And it's arguable as to how organic he is after he comes out of the sun.

I recall some early part of the Fourth World where he was introduced in the issue as "The Immortal Superman".

Baneposting got old by 2014.

Never underestimate how shit Sup Forums really is.

>a comic book cinematic universe was born due to muh rights

Reminder that DC One Million was actually fucking great and Superman-Prime was the sickest shit.

It sounds like the dumbest shit ever made but Morrison made it work very well.

It's been forever since I've read that one. I want an animated adaptation or elements of it in a cartoon at some point. It's too awesome to pass up.

Where as marvel fought and paid studios to get Iron man, hulk thor and cap in one movie.....

Underdog stories always work better

>Michael B. Jordan was approached to play Cyborg, but declined in favor of playing the Human Torch in FANT4STIC.

I bet he's really satisfied with that decision.

Snyder is legitimately stupid. Actually Eisenberg as Jimmy Olsen wouldn't have been too bad.

>Michael B. Jordan was approached to play Cyborg, but declined in favor of playing the Human Torch in FANT4STIC.
His loss.

>Diane Kruger, Rosamund Pike, Kate Mara and Gal Gadot were considered for Faora before Antje Traue was cast. Snyder favored Gadot

>Olga Kurylenko, Elodie Yung and Emily Ratajkowski auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman before Gal Gadot was cast.

Jesus, what is wrong with Snyder? Why the hell was he so zealous about castins waifs in female warrior roles, and especially Gadot? Did he owe her money or something?

>Olga Kurylenko
Why? She's an even worse actor than Gadot.
She's a plank of wood when it comes to acting talent.

It's official: Snyder really sucks at casting.

I think Diane Kruger would've made a good Faora, then Antje could have been our WW.

Too bad Snyder's a hack.

>Why? She's an even worse actor than Gadot.

You're not serious are you? Gadot is horrific. She was truly the worst part of BvS. Olga can at least speak without sounding like a mongoloid.

Eh, Cavill and Affleck were good choices. Shanon and Jeremy Irons too, idk. Maybe he just sucks with women?

At least she didn't lick her lips whole movie.

No, she just had a smug cunty expression in every scene she was in.

All you need to look at is Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Completely awful casting choice and most of us saw that trainwreck coming.

Yeah, no argument here. OTOH, I can't wait to see what a trainwreck JL is going to be.

>>WB executives initially objected to the idea of Lois Lane finding out Superman's identity early as, as they believed the Lois-Clark-Superman dynamic was important to the mythos, but Goyer advocated that it be removed as it was not fitting for a modern setting.

They were still confusing, I couldnt tell where the movie was going it was like I was watching a bunch of scenes with barely any context to whats happening and why its being shown

poor bastard had no choice really, how could he say no to Chronicle 2

>Michael B. Jordan was approached to play Cyborg, but declined in favor of playing the Human Torch in FANT4STIC.
That's like jumping off of the Titanic and onto the iceberg.

Is he really confirmed for Black Panther?

I think pretty much everyone black and in movie making is in Black Panther.

Not gonna lie, that's kinda racist.
Oh you can be in own movies but only if youre the sidekick or in the black ppl movie.

>and with the same overall tone of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but the movie's overwhelmingly negative reception and disappointing performance at the box office led to plans being changed into one movie, with a lighter and more upbeat tone, although the movie reportedly still sets up a direct sequel.

That's a lie.

>The middle film tends to be the darkest one. I do think from “Man of Steel” through “Justice League,” it is one saga really.

>I expect “Justice League” will be tonally not quite as dark as “Batman v Superman.” From that point of view, I felt compelled to go back and try to lift us and myself into a different tonal place because I think when you write a darker film, sometimes you want to redeem it all a bit.

Terrio said all that before BvS was bashed.

blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2016/03/11/inside-chris-terrios-vision-for-batman-superman-and-justice-league/

Shh let the drones think this.
But honestly they been said the tones of the movies would be different.

Don't worry, Spider-Man: Homecoming has become the interracial breeding grounds.

It's like how when Daredevil accidentally knocked that prostitute out the window, he started being more careful and superhero-like than a straight-up vigilante. But the fact that Snyder failed to actually show this change or even demonstrate it throws all of it out the window

I think it might be because

1) Black Panther is currently THE big Black superhero movies. It's a pretty big opportunity to get some face time on screen in a big franchise.

and

2) How many black actors are there in Hollywood, anyway? They're probably having a tough time just rounding out the whole extended cast.

Sup Forums I honestly don't care

Don't believe Matt's lies, user.

Nah. In Hollywood if your black you got two choices:
Make a film and only star black ppl because the Jew think you can only make movies for black folks
Or
Get outside sourcing because of the above reason

They are plenty of black directors in Hollywood, they just can't get funding when its not a black casted movie. So Marvel isn't being progressive about this when they are following Hollywood tropes.

Why are you acting like it's a conspiracy that Black Panther has an all-black cast?
It takes place in a closed off African country.

I'm not acting like that. Of course BP is gonna have an all black cast
I'm saying for all of Marvel's talk about being progressive they only do the bare minuim overall. BTS of BP is just another tick into how much bullshit they can feed the public.
'We finally have a black director after 14+ movies"
In a movie starring black people. Just like Hollywood treats most Black directors.

From what I can tell, I was right all along and Nolan really is the only person who felt like he had the best idea of what to do with DC heroes.

I can't believe he kept getting "persuaded" by Snyder and Goyer

>A SECOND FRESH REVIEW

>still posting that out of context quote

How is that out of context? You can literally listen to it

...

He's talking about one particular scene that he couldn't do while they're in costume rather than as a whole concept.

>Michael B. Jordan was approached to play Cyborg, but declined in favor of playing the Human Torch in FANT4STIC.

Dumb move kid.

I love Kyle.

He's my favorite Green Lantern. Why can't he be back on the Justice League?

What's interesting is The Flash is being directed by a Black Guy.

I love how Marvel goes out of their way to talk about how "progressive" they are and SJWs eat it the fuck up. But DC just casually does more progressive things and Marvel Drones who are SJWs talk about how DC is fascist and Marvel are a bunch of Saints.

>From what I can tell, I was right all along and Nolan really is the only person who felt like he had the best idea of what to do with DC heroes.

Honestly I think Nolan is kind of an overrated director. He has weird fucking views which come across way to strong in a lot of his movies (especially his Dark Knight Trilogy).

While I enjoyed Batman Begins it isn't great.

I don't think the two Nolan brothers realised they were making Paradise Lost starring Batman and the Joker, but whether they did or not they did well with adapting that with Batman.

Then Dark Knight Rises came out which was meant to be Nolan's mic drop on Batman and it fucking sucked!

Nah, what we got was still pure garbage.
The fact that these were the only choices proves how absolutely retarded WB is at this.

Are you seriously showing off how progressive DC is?
How low can one fanbase fall?

Johns hates him.

Why are you tripfagging, tripshit?
