>one of the best horror movies of all time
>no women

Makes you think.

I just wanted to have a fun horror thread. Please don't shitpost

Blu-ray release of The Thing from Another World WHEN? The John Carpenter version is my favorite but the original is a really good 1950s sci-fi horror movie.

Alien is also one of the best horror movies ever and that movie has two women in it. Now shut up, you dummy.

This, I would love to not pirate this movie

There's a region free Japanese blu ray release. Little pricey though

Dark Star - 7/10
Assault on Precinct 13 - 8.5/10
Halloween - 10/10
The Fog - 8/10
Escape from New York - 9/10
The Thing - 10/10
Christine - 9/10 (please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this film is a criminally underrated masterpiece)
Starman - 8/10
Big Trouble in Little China - 8.5/10
Prince of Darkness - 7.5/10
They Live - 9/10
In the Mouth of Madness - 7.5/10
Escape from L.A. - 6/10
Vampires - 6/10
Ghosts of Mars - 4/10
The Ward - 4/10

I haven't seen Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Village of the Damned or his TV movies. Post your own John Carpenter filmography ratings, anons.

Hitchcock aside what directors should I check out if Carpenter is my favorite? The Thing is my favorite movie

Howard Hawks is by far his biggest inspiration. Assault on Precinct 13 is pretty much a remake of Rio Bravo.

Here you go! ebay.com/itm/THE-THING-From-Another-World-1951-Blu-ray-James-Arness-BRAND-NEW-/262371704811?hash=item3d16927feb:g:jhUAAOSwhQhY5V19

Kubrick maybe? You can't really go wrong there.

Anybody here got opinions on the Thing game?

Hey guys, just your average Sup Forums poster here. Nothing more to see haha. Man I love movies and television series. How about that game of thrones, huh?

i second this i don't want to try and recreate lightning

Why are you being an asshole to people that just want to have a good time and talk about horror movies?

I'm roleplaying as a Thing you fucking idiot

i guess there's not a market for it but i wish there were more shapeshifter horror movies or horror movies with the same level of paranoia

anyone got similar movies?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers maybe?

My bad

If you liked The Thing then you might like David Cronenberg's body horror films. The Fly, Videodrome and Scanners are fantastic and The Brood, Shivers and Rabid are also worth checking out.

I've seen all those. They're great!

>Christine - 9/10 (please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this film is a criminally underrated masterpiece)
It is underrated, but no way a 9/10.

Yeah...you're definitely one of us. You're not from reddit or anything. I mean I've heard that if you're alone with someone from reddit that they assimilate your biomass into their body and transform you into a shapeshifting monster that eats people. Probably just some internet nonsense I know...you seem really trustworthy.

...

Is this film actually good? I've heard it's a ripoff of Alien/The Thing.

I think it was this one

Thanks, user. Although I'll wait for a cheaper blu-ray release. $70 is too much for one film.

Yeah i'd need to be a bigger fan to drop that on it but I doubt they'll ever release it for blu ray in the US

What do you think of this movie?

Dunno how I've never seen this but I'm going to rectify that tonight.

His elvis tv movie is actually really good.

Let us know what you think!

women are scary enough
>alien
>horror film
It's "tense" maybe? Nothing really horrifying about it. Aliens expanded the concept to a better degree, but that was an action flick. The Thing is kino.

Best carpenter soundtrack coming through

>white-hot night of hate
Jesus Carpenter... how'd he get away with it?

>mfw my amazing gets :DD

I haven't watched it, questions

How does the thing turn you into another thing? Does it eat you or what?

is this a joke? The T-1000 is fucking liquid metal

It basically eats you and imitates your cell structure

1 caveat- it has to make absolutely sure at least one human scientist survives

I was watching a short video of one scene, it looks like all it did was just bite the guy and he just turned into a thing, doesn't it have to consume him whole?

wrong, that never happens in the film. It bites a guy, he dies, then another man is revealed to have been a Thing all along.

If all living things pm earth became the thing, do you think they'd start imitating our way of life? Or would they start to look towards other planets for life?

What would win the thing or a xenomorph colony?

colony

How?

Well I'm assuming the Thing is just one entity and hasn't consumed anyone else yet. So just the Thing against an entire colony seems pretty one sided to me

you can tell from the OP image its gun be gud

is john carpenter our guy?

i think it only pretends to be us until it has the numbers advantage and then it dgaf about imitating us

T1000 loses every time

the thing can hide in any living creature, not just humans, and it has alien tech far more advanced than the future human tech of T-1000

it was already making a spaceship to escape in antartica with broken helicopter and radio equipment

on the mainland it would whip up some shit to destroy the t-1000 easy. the t-1000 would have ot nuke the whole earth to beat it

it's a total rip off

Anybody seen Harbinger Down?

Yes, it was a 7/10 IMHO. It had some neat practical effects, an interesting monster premise (tartigrades nigga) andthe aacting was as expected.

Has anyone seen this yet? I feel like it really paid tribute to the monster movies of the 80s-90s and found myself engrossed in it like I haven't been in a while.

No i haven't but i'll check it out! Is harbinger down better than the 2011 thing movie? It's the same people who did isn't it?

It's a fun movie but the sloppy ending will make you rage. It's not the best bit not without charm.

6.5/10 without the asspull pileup
6/10 with it

I really need to see The Fog. If only for Barbeau. Hoo mama.

I've only seen pieces on TV. Isn't Carpenter a bit character?

The Fog is really good. Kinda slow at first but picks up. Yeah he's in like the first two minutes of the movie

It was there effects team, yes. I dont know, I actually enjoyed the Thing prequel, probably because i was starving for a new creature feature at the time, but it has its charm, if not completely understanding the premise of the creature. Was it better? I dont know, I feel i enjoyed it roughly the same.Seriously go back and watch The thing, in the scene in the dog kennel where the creature is digesting the dogs it splits open and a little flower with barbs pops out. That "flower" is actually a series of dog tongues fused and the "barbs" are the teeth. You may already known this but in the prequel they did it again even though the thing had not incorporated any dogs as of yet.

I encourage everyone to read the short story at the first opportunity!

I'll just leave this here.

IMPORTANT UPCOMING ANNIVERSARIES:

In a few months will the 20th anniversary of the death of Charles Hallahan, who himself literally died of a dramatic heart attack while driving in LA.

Fall 2018 will be the 80-year anniversary of two extremely important events in American science fiction: the original publication of the short story "who goes there", mentioned above (which spawns the whole Thing franchise), and within a few weeks of this, the Welles broadcast of the Wells "War of the Worlds" story. Meta as fuck.

It was really great guys

I looked at this today at the video store, should have gotten it instead of Resident Evil: Final Chapter. Life was excellent though.

you can rent it on amazon for .99 cents, wait did you say video store?????????

The best part of The Thing is the desolate atmosphere and paranoia, not cheap gore. Body horror fans can fuck off forever, it's on par with torture porn dogshit.

ESSENTIAL NOT QUITE HORROR BUT CLOSE ENOUGH KINO
Green Room
Bone Tomahawk

Please help me add to this list

>REEEEEERR, STOP LIKING THINGS I DONT LIKE, CHICKEN TENDIES REEEEEEEE

Yes, we still have a video store in my town. Also has games.

The atmosphere of the thing is great but the gore of it is great and it changed hollywood's special effects

>gore
>great
How old are you?

Nah but I disagree completely with all except The Thing.

What I meant was that gore in the movie was industry changing. Just because you feel you're above it doesn't take away from how good those practical affects are.

Savini had more of an effect on the gore scene in hollywood than anything The Thing did.

That still doesn't take away from how important The Thing is

It puts it in perspective.

Never said anything about Savini's work or how good it was. I feel like you're just clawing at trying to feel right.

You claimed The Thing changed hollywoods special effects when replying to an user that bemoans gorefags that typically only enjoy things for the gore factor. I chimed in to clarify that The Thing didn't break any new grounds and referenced someone who did.

Maybe I was wrong in saying it changed special effects but it absolute broke new grounds. Watch a documentary about it. Nobody had done anything to that scale before.

Maybe I will. Know any?

This one's about the whole movie but they go over the special effects within the first 30 minutes I think youtube.com/watch?v=wolVJV5tNqM
