What went wrong?

What went wrong?

Jews.

money is a hell of a drug

their "competition"

Hulk's arm looks really weird there

Some people say its the Mouse
Some people say its Perlmutter
But Sup Forums knows the truth...
IT WAS HIM ALL ALONG

The DC rivalry meme became real.

They stopped having crossovers because of that one salty Mexican guy who works at marvel kept flaming DC, I'm too lazy to look up his name.

Anyway once they stopped respecting the "competition", they were no longer trying to beat anyone. So there was even less of a reason to give a shit.

Then the movies happened, and DC completely shit the bed. So now Marvel just doesn't give a fuck, it can get away with whatever it wants.

The movie universe

Turning complex characters into memes

Appealing to normies

Focusing on Avengers rather than X-Men

The fans

Maybe Bendis is trying to kill the Marvel universe, after they killed his Ultimate OC universe.

this

No respect for their readers/competition

Huge egos due to movie success

Lack of actual talent

Cutting off majors parts of their mythos because they don't own the movie rights

Forcing in literal who's and race bending/gender bending established characters.

the 2015 marvel poster doesn't have any x men or FF on it

they fired Jim Shooter

>the 2015 marvel poster

The one time they tried to go without events for a while, The Heroic Age, was a sales flop That convinced them the only thing to do was have more and more events, several a year, so no one could ever finish their stories the way they wanted to.

So basically we're screwed because "The Heroic Age" was a terrible idea for a branding and they blamed the lack of events rather than the branding.

>Focusing on Avengers rather than X-Men

X-Men is played-out garbage. It's Marvel's equivalent of Legion of Superheroes, "Who's pairing up with who/Villains with rote 1 dimensional characterization/time-travel revisionist bullshittery.

X-Men is a creatively exhausted property that only serves to make the Marvel civilian populace look like sociopaths.

What are they gonna blame for the lowered sales after Secret Wars ended?

X-Men's fanbase also supported 20 books a month, regardless of their dubious quality

It's always tempting to churn out large amounts of low-quality dreck when the fanbase buys absolutely EVERYTHING.

It's a temptation we'd all be hard-pressed to resist.

That's easy, they'll blame the Diversity push and decide (though not say publicly) that girls and nonwhites don't want the wonderful, wonderful comics they offered them. I mean they had minority characters and that's all you need to appeal to minorities, right?

Remember, the explanation is always that their comics were perfect so it's the public's fault for not buying them.

The movies. They don't need to try anymore for people to buy their product. Also resulted in the fall of the F4 and X-Men, which were half their fanbase.

Marvel's problem is that they're telling the fans want the want, instead of just entertaining their fans.

It may not be compelling to produce or read for a non fan, but it's what the people who open their wallets every Wednesday want.

Marvel can continue their attempts to expand the comic reading fanbase, that's fine and dandy all people have said is "don't do it at the expense of the people who are already buying comics"

To be fair, that'd be mostly accurate. Their comics are trash right now, but black people and girls don't care about comics. Their diversity push was never going to work.

I honestly have no idea who does and doesn't care about comics because there's hardly any actual polling on it.

The total minor-leagueness of the comics industry is summed up by something Marvel's EiC said a couple of years ago:

>While we don’t have any market research, the eyes don’t lie. If you go to conventions and comic book stores, more and more female readers are emerging.

What kind of industry doesn't do market research into who's buying its comics, and bases everything on the highly unrepresentative samples of stuff they've seen at stores and conventions? If TV and movies rely too much on polls and focus groups, at least they don't completely make up shit about who's buying their products.

Alonso is doing the exact opposite of what Quesada did and, as a result, stories are being produced that are not only bad - they're boring.

Does Alonso have much power, though? Probably he has more than Bob Harras, who is just a figurehead at DC, but it seems like the EiC job doesn't carry as much power as it used to. Quesada had a mandate to shake things up. Alonso had a mandate to keep Quesada happy.

I've only met like 3 other people at conventions who even read comics.
What the fuck is Marvel gauging this with? The amount of females cosplaying?

It reminds me of how politicians always say they have a chance with [insert group that will never vote for them] because a lot of [group] showed up at one of their rallies.

Our eyes lie to us. Take a poll.
