He got caught and then they offered to let him go due to his father being a very high ranking (or something like that not sure of the specifics) and McCain declined and ended up being imprisoned for years longer to stay with his men. Really, regardless of what you think of him these days, it was pretty badass.

his dad was a high ranking Admiral for the navy, the other pow's claim he was kept seperately because the vietcong knew this and wanted leverage. He made something like two dozen propaganda tapes for them, claiming the main targets were churches and hospitals, etc.
