America probably would've won in an invasion against Japan (it was pretty obvious from every battle after Midway that the US was capable of tearing through just about anything and could outproduce anyone if the war came down to attrition). The nukes were to reduce over deaths on both sides by millions and so Japan surrendered before Russia could invade.

In the event that Russia never invaded and the US never nuked Japan, it would've been a disgustingly brutal campaign because Japanese citizens were taught to defend their homeland at all costs. School children were being taught to pick up anti-tank mines and run up to tanks and lay in front of them.

I agree that American technically cheated by using infinitely more destructive weapons that nobody had, but it was for the better.
