The answer lies in MAD. When one nation has nukes and the other doesn't, they can use their nukes without worrying about being nuked themselves. If both nations have nukes, then they are at a standstill because neither wants to risk destruction just to destroy the other and so you have peace. If you wish for peace, prepare for war, with me still? Now you make it so that one of the nations tries to take away the other's ability to defend itself with nukes, that's where the problem arises. Now one nation can use it's nukes, while the other can't. The balance of power is broken and war is inevitable.
And in case you're going "well, haha, you're going to be nuked, serves you right you subhuman Russian". Well, no, that's not the case. The missile "defense" shield isn't meant to defend anyone aside from the nation that set it up, so if war breaks out between the US and Russia, then your country is very likely going to be destroyed in the process. The US doesn't really care about any of its supposed allies, if they have to sacrifice a few to achieved their goals then they very likely will without a second thought.
