Inofficially it gets interesting: In the early 90s he was heard saying that she cannot stand the CDU (her party, which "was" the most conservative party and still is if you ignore the AfD) at all. Friends from the 70s and 80s say that they cannot understand why she joined the party and some journalists say that she is probably closer to the Greens then any other party. She has not allowed a lot of information from her GDR-time to be leaked, in 2013 iirc she denied journalists her papers or photos because of supposed privacy-issues. Some also say that she found her reasoning in the work of his father, a protestant Christian pastor in the communist country. She also was quite prone to listening to Americans, back when the US invaded Iraq the then chouncellor Schröder was totally against joining sides with the US. Schröder fucked a lot of things up, but that is probably one thing a lot of Germans are happy he did. However it is now known that Merkel was quite supportive on the invasion back then.

It's pretty simple. Merkel joined the CDU because they were the biggest party and had just "lead" the reunification. Kohl then built her up as his "successor" but only ironically cause she was so fucking ugly and uncharismatic and he often humiliated her in front of the party and basically everyone there shared the opinion that Berlusconi later uttered about her. So Merkel grew to hate and despise her own party and wished only for one thing: to destroy it. For the US (who rule Germany) she's the ideal candidate because she doesn't have any ideals and she doesn't have a conscience, the only thing she wants is to destroy her own party. It's a very convenient alliance. I think the GDR stuff is overrated, she's not a communist, just a follower. She probably hates Germans deep down but so does every single German politician.
