There are anons on this very board who think this art "isn't that bad, it's better than Liefeld anyway xD"

If you think this is 'bad' instead of just mediocre, you honestly need to lurk more. You might hate the subject matter, but the art isn't where it fails, it is just a trash comic.

Where's that one page with Arcade from the guest artist Hellcat by some AT boarder?

Greg Land thread?

No, the art fails as well. If you think this isn't bad your standards are pretty damn low.

My standards are low and even I think that art is shit.

...

Art is subjective.

If Piccaso doodles a weiner dog it's just as much art as anything else he ever made.

Is the art really that bad?

I've seen quite a bit of this comic thanks to Sup Forums bitching about it, which is understandable because I remember the shitstorm from when this came out.

But art seems passable. I can identify objects and motions. It's just the faces that are so fucked.

...

I'm all for stylistic art and all, but not like this.
And Deodato.
You know how it goes. When famous people wear torn pants, it's fashion. When you wear torn pants, you're bum.

I think it's just ugly, and that's mostly the faces (which are hideous).

More lazy than anything, but yeah.

>the art isn't where it fails
surely you mean the art isn't the only place where it fails

I'd never seen this picture before. I thought it was something you drew in MS Paint. But my immediate reactions was still, "That's actually really good. You could probably sell that for a lot."

Reminds me.

>it's just as much art as anything else he ever made.
But that doesn't mean it's as good as everything else he's ever made
nor good period

Art isn't good simply because skilled people worked on it
That's like saying McDonald's tastes great because they sell a lot of burgers
Regardless of how you feel about the taste of McDonald's, it's an incorrect statement

and even then mostly the mouths. Which seems to be on purpose.

Especially when you remember that the original squirrel girl had a screwed mouth.

Long story short, moment you become exclusive/BFF with editors, you can start shitting up and nobody will care.

>the original squirrel girl had a screwed mouth
That still doesn't mean that the art is good
Also, HUGE PET PEEVE, the original doesn't actually look that terrible
It's literally just one panel where she looks weird and everyone is point and saying "see, she always looked like a freak"
And the fact that the original looked a certain way doesn't actually mean that every other incarnation should look that way or in the latest comic's case, just fucked up in general or that it's okay for anything to look bad because the original looked weird

Squirrel Girl currently isnt BAD art, I think, but in a cape comic it aint good, thats for damn sure. I wouldnt mind this art style in a slice of life with no capes.

Geometry and line work were Picasso's strong points.

I could never MS paint such an aesthetically pleasing wiener dog.

I normally never, ever read Superhero comics.

Are so many superhero comic artists really such huge hacks, that they can't do anatomy on their own without tracing and stealing?

And the ones that do their own anatomy draw horrible, disfigured, disproportionate monstrosities that make you wonder why they even continued with shading/coloring details after the initial anatomic sketches?

That goes beyond just "this doesn't suit my tastes." or "this is crudely drawn."
This looks deliberately unappealing. Is the artist trying to make the ugliest product they can in attempt to ward off readers?

No, there are plenty of good cape artists.
Land is just well known for tracing. And Liefeld is Liefeld

No, most is just middle-of-the-road art that serves its purpose and isn't remarkable one way or the other.

Liefeld is massively famous for his "art". It was nineties, he drew edgy, it was hilarious.
And Land... Land built career tracing porn and being friend with Quesada or whoever. Cronyism is the best!

It's not fair to generalize the entire genre for the work of two shitty artists.

I'm not quite sure what you mean with that page. It flows well, the opening panel is nice, and regardless of the shitty writing the art is fine, just not exceptional.

And compare it to Deodato's work today and him tracing Brotherhood of Steel armor, Optimus Prime's head and fucking Kate Bishop fanart.

Decent art if it were for anything other then a cape comic. I would read a webcomic done by her.

Art doesn't imply merit or worth. Some artist shit in a can and somebody bought his art for a large sum of money. Art is one of the most meaningless, idiotic words in existence.

He shit in a hundred cans and made custom labels for them. The line that creates art is drawn in effort given.

Yeah I dont get why some guys rely off tracing for anatomy when there are those little wooden posable mannequins. Hell im not an artist but I want one. It would be great for story boarding because Im one half of a artist writer team on a comic project, my artist didnt tell me when I signed up there is no formal comic script format and its kind of standard for writers to make very rough story boards.

winner winner chicken dinner

It will always make OP's pic look like a Rembrandt.

Have you ever nervously paced around a glove someone dropped in a museum, afraid that it might be an exhibit?

Moon Over June is SO bad that it boomerangs around and becomes high art

They're like $6 at Wal-Mart

I absolutely fucking despise Deodato. His "art" somehow worsens with time, it should be impossible when all you're doing is fucking tracing.

Your subjective

Art is a huge joke that doesn't mean anything, which is why you should concern yourself with Craft.

Picasso was a legitimately talented draughtsman

>Yeah I dont get why some guys rely off tracing for anatomy when there are those little wooden posable mannequins
Because those things don't teach anatomy at all are actually completely useless due to their unnatural joints?

Pretty sure henderson has/is doing some Archy shit. I forget.

I hate the bitch but if you like it that'd be a good place to start.

hm

here i thought comics have better standards than manga

I kekked wholeheartedly at that HHHNNNG

is this traced porn?

What else should it be?

what artists traces porn for ARRGHHH faces?

The kind that Marvel approves.

Was he always tracer or once upon a time he was real artist?

at one point he was, but it's been so long he's forgotten

All I know is that he does it A LOT.

Boy I'd love to know who was used here

someone should establish bedrock here

What is he up to these days?

Making sure you know Sonic's arms are not blue.

TO be fair, it is better than Liefeld.

Not really. Liefeld's art in Covenant is actually passable.

...

...

Livio Ramondelli repeatedly gets work from IDW and I cannot fathom why, other than he must be super cheap. It's worse when they use him on the stuff that also gets packed in with toys (wouldn't you want your BEST artists to represent you?).

One time he drew a scene where an important character returned, but wasn't name dropped. We were supposed to know who it was by the character's looks but half the readers COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHO HE DAMN WAS.

That's not even close to the worst panel in that issue. Look, they're mostly on "model"

...

...

Frazer Irving art is superb, you pleb...

But yes, he should avoid cape comics, his style just doesn't fit.

I don't know which comics you read, but in my book it's terrible art. Sure, there are places where it's technically correct, and the artist is obviously practiced. She can draw good hands, by the looks of it, for instance.

But there are also anatomy mistakes everywhere. Ones that stand out. Like a woman looking like a man so much that Tumblr outed themselves as the judgemental pricks they really are and declared the character trans. Which she isn't.

The art could most charitably be described as "mostly functional". Personally, I find the faces she draws to be incredibly hard to look at. The mouths are off-putting, the noses look inhuman, and the eyes are unexpressive.

It's the sort of art you wouldn't scoff at if you found it on the side of a Mexican ice cream van. But panel after panel? No thanks.

Picasso did actually have a weiner dog that he cared for a lot though and has been in several other of his works.

The art in manga is widely too simplistic for a Western comic. Mangakas don't do very impressive art as often as they instinctively churn out shit that looks practically identical to 80% of other manga (since they've practiced that until they can draw a standard anime eye in 0.01 seconds flat when endangeed) to meet their ridiculously tight deadlines and keep up with their slave-labor schedule and getting paid in peanuts.

There's some exceptions but that's mostly it

Every time

>Mangakas don't do very impressive art
That's subjective, because I find that 10x more effort and detail is put into manga and western artists don't really make an effort to make their art look different beyond using a different color pallete
I mean, for the most part, western capeshit is just a series of computer generated backgrounds traced over to look like they drew it themselves and then awkwardly putting actors in those scenes
Western Artists are actually terrible at fight scenes

It's not one panel, it's almost every panel she appears in. She was made to look and act intentionally annoying. Later artists made her look cute.

Considering Squirrel Girl is more comedy book than cape book, i'd say it fits pretty well.

I really don't think she looks that bad in other panels
This isn't a page, but a few panels mashed together

...

And her Archer and Armstrong looks better than anything he's ever done.

>western artists don't really make an effort to make their art look different beyond using a different color pallete
Most manga looks the same on a way that could be misintepreted as symbol drawing. The style is so universal that people make guides on how to draw manga specifically and given that the student actually understands fundamentals the results should be accurate enough. A lot of popular mangaka have their own distinctive style, but they're the exception, not the rule. Of all the things you could have praised about manga that is not one of them

I dont know, she looks about as ugly as in her current book. If anything, at least now she doesn't have the hideous eye makeup.

>Most manga looks the same on a way that could be misintepreted as symbol drawing
No user, that's not because all manga looks the same, it's because the west doesn't actually consume comics, western or eastern
People think of that symbolized drawing in the same way that people think that all comics are about superheroes

If you asked any person on the street to name a comic book character, chances are that they'd name something from from Marvel or DC, and most definitely a super hero character
Even though comics like Ghost World, Scott Pilgrim, and Sin City have all spawned movie versions, they aren't considered comic book movies because people don't really know about the comic books they are based on

So if manga and anime all looks a specific way to you, it's because you don't actually consume enough manga

>One time he drew a scene where an important character returned, but wasn't name dropped.
What book was it and who was returned?

whats bad about it? that page looks fine.

Its a collection of Far Side comics. I have that book. The whole book is just normal panels, but the middle of the book has about 10 pages of Weiner Dog parodies

Nah, post some DKR2 or Holy Terror if you want uggo by Frank

>says "western artists"
>means "artists who do superhero work for two large corporations"

If you're going to be that sloppy with your language, maybe you should just keep your weeaboo mouth shut and fuck off to Sup Forums.

I never understood who the fuck the fat guy was supposed to be. Just a random Joker goon who stayed loyal all those years?

Is this the only time the robots were actually in disguise instead of just being trans

I still say she looks pretty cute there, and I think the eye makeup is more than okay
And really, Squirrel Girl looking terrible in her original appearance shouldn't even be an argument because Erica Henderson draws all of her characters that terribly
I'm sure you know about how she had to remind people that a main character wasn't trans because she couldn't adequately draw a female with masculine features without making them look completely like a dude in drag
Not only that, but since her appearance, she has looked much cuter
After years of Squirrel Girl looked at least kinda cute, why would you draw her terribly and cite her original appearance
Nobody expects the Iron Man armor to look clunky, grey, and made from spare parts even though that's what it looked like in it's first appearance

Why's he have the 'just fuck my shit up' haircut?

>means "artists who do superhero work for two large corporations"
>because he's talking about the art from popular, large corporations like Marvel and DC or Shueisha on the eastern end
context user

>Art is subjective.
How? Aesthetic value exists in the world as colour does- dependent on perception but available to all observers capable of perceiving. Everyone everywhere knows what beauty is, and everyone can be moved by truly excellent art. Classical sculpture is good art. Renaissaince painting is good art. A doodle of a dog on a napkin is not good art. A woman being fingered onstage with a spaghetti can is not good art. Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is not good art.
