Sparta had a unique society described as "Eliteist Communism" by most. They had a permanent underclass of "Helots" which were literally people enslaved to be workers and farmers.
They had very rigid gender roles, as in men fought and did things to help men fight ie made weapons, repaired things, whatever. Women bore children, made important things like clothes and took care of everyday life stuff as many men could be gone for a long time.
Men and woman were rarely around each other for long enough to be considered "married" by any means, in Sparta the state was everything and people were merely tools to be used in the furthering of Sparta's interests. So women made kids, and younger men made kids with them when the old and maimed could not.
