It is too many characters, they're spending too much on intros and stuff like that. But you can just read the basic arcs, no problem.

Schoolastic has a good line of DC chapter books and there's also some Lego DC superhero books (the toons are starting to show up on Netflix). Those are perfect for kids the age of your daughter. I get them for my nephews/nieces all the time.

If you wanted a female focused story, you can check out Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam - it's as much about Mary as it is about Billy.
