Image Comics Plans New 'All-America' Hero for 2017 Series - Starring Totally Not Ms America Chavez

>Introducing America Vasquez, the star of Image Comics' All-America Comix, a series set for launch in 2017. Created by Man of Action Entertainment's Joe Casey and artist Nick Dragotta, America is ready to kick ass, take names and discover what lies behind the mysteries of existence itself. So, you know, nothing too big.
>The promo text for the new comic book sets up the tone for what's to come: "You wanted it! You got it! She is a hero for our time — and the time is NOW! A superpowered champion of the oppressed, AMERICA VASQUEZ is the one you've been waiting for! And this may be her greatest adventure of all. When she is confronted with the hidden secrets of the universe, you won't believe the cosmic truth she uncovers! Issue #1 hits — and we do mean HITS — in 2017 from Image Comics!"
>Casey is an old hand when it comes to this level of cosmic comic book overload — in addition to runs on DC Entertainment's Superman and Marvel's Uncanny X-Men, his resume includes Catalyst Comix and Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers, both distillations of 1970s and '80s ambitious grandeur with a contemporary swagger.
>If this new character seems somewhat familiar, there's a reason for that; she bears a resemblance to Miss America Chavez, a character Casey and Dragotta created for Marvel Entertainment in 2011 for the Vengeance comic book series. Miss America Chavez went on to appear in Marvel's Young Avengers and Ultimates series but, despite a fervent fan following, has never been awarded a series of her own.
>hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/image-comics-plans-new-all-911716?utm_source=twitter

I really like her. Is the writer any good? I don't follow comics enough to know each writer.

>despite a fervent fan following, has never been awarded a series of her own.

the shade.

lol at implication Casey's America Chavez is the person everyone likes and Gillen didn't just take a cool looking blank slate.

most importantly does she wear underwear

Literally anti Trump bait garbage.

>hurrr we made our American symbol a Mexican! Take THAT Trump!

Did he just rip off his own character?

Wafifuing ther already? Christ.

>Image made Ms America book before Marvel made a Ms America book

You seem triggered, amigo.

>artist Nick Dragotta
is east of west finally done?

Bleeding Cool ran a thing basically saying Marvel's announcing her book today or tomorrow.

This is some next level creator fuckery. I enjoy it for that if nothing else.

>and artist Nick Dragotta
NO. GET BACK TO WORK ON EAST OF WEST.

You can't do that, he's just done it again with a new publisher. Honestly if you give me current Image on Mac vs. current Marvel on Mac, even with Casey I take the former. Marvel are too tame, too willing to let their heroes be unflawed, too willing to take an easy fan appeal route instead of really working the concept.

JSA sigil magic is legitimately scaring me now.

>AMERICA VASQUEZ
Wow they uhh.. they're not even hiding it.

no one wanted casey ms america tho!

Maybe this time she'll be straight. You know for the fans.

Oh, we're doing this again...

It's a character they invented. Why would they have to?

Honestly it's worth it just for the reactions.

It's the Image Comics way, user.

I for one am glad to have this weird retread of the 90s. I know it gets a lot of hate, but the 90s were when I got into comics and shit like this just triggers nostalgia in me.

I didn't sigil this

but I'm laughing my ass off at Twitter right now, watching people tie themselves in knots about creator's rights when it's someone they dislike

>most importantly does she wear underwear

Does America Chavez not or something?

One thing people remember about her is how the writer made sure to mention that she doesn't wear underwear

Thats scarlet witch

Uh, no.

Casey said in an interview back when he first created the character for Vengeance that she doesn't wear underwear and that's an important part of her character as it says a lot about her and her personality.

No that was just Perez not drawing her with any all the time

IKR. It's just, follow through your damn argument. The reactions are hilarious!

Casey made a point of saying she didn't wear underwear in that first series. It was random as fuck and pointless

What're the bets they moved on this super quick when they found out Marvel either wasn't launching or was launching with a delay?

It's textbook Joe Casey, though. He can do some really sophisticated and interesting work, and then he undercuts it with something so juvenile, usually in a sexual way, that it ruins much of the effect.

>not sharing

cmon at least give me a hashtag to search

doubt it will be as good as the bendis doing alias again hate

Pretty high considering its been all but confirmed that they're going to announce the Ms. America comic at SDCC. That this announcement came just a few days before SDCC is telling.

i'm so worried about a shit creative team now. amerikate pushing, ugh stressful

Is there a rumored writer? I think Margeruite Bennett and Kelly Thomson have both mentioned a project they're really excited for - but ofc that could be anything.

The rumor is that its either Gillen, Ewing, or Bennett.

Bennett talked about DC stuff iirc, maybe Thomson. She is writing Hawkeye...
vomiting at that ship

Latter is pretty much confirmed

Ms America was the only person from the teasers with two people on them that hasn't gotten a book yet and there has been a writer on twitter that's been talking about MAC constantly. And Alonso said more Marvel Nower books are to be announced later.
They're totally gonna announce it and other books at SDCC at least.

ewing most likely
maybe gillen's return to 616 comics

Not so much yet

Joe Casey is hit and miss

Keeping the Ewing/Rocafort dream alive

>Ewing
I hadn't even dared hope. Fingers crossed.

Not really

Jeremy Whitley has an unannounced book coming, wrote America recently, and has been tweeting aobut her a lot
And Gillen is rumored to come back and write something for marvel

>Gillen
Eh, he's a good writer and maybe some time away from capes has reinvigorated his writing. I just hope he doesn't undo the character development that Ewing did for her.

>Ewing
Best writer for the character, but then I don't really want him doing the solo for a relatively new character when Ewing's biggest asset is his ability to use continuity. I'd rather him be one something with a bit more history than that.

>Bennett
DELETE THIS NOW. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~

I feel like Gillen would've been teasing something from Big 2 since he made a big deal of taking a break after Vader.

>If anything comes of this awful new Image title, I hope it gives women creators the confidence to rip off DC and Marvel.

reminder Copra is one of the best ongoing comics

Also you know in a way this is Casey/Dragotta RENOUNCING ownership of a character. Because they're outright saying 'this is our take and it's going to run with this other one and you get to choose'.

It is up to the fans.

He's not your amigo, cuate

I wouldn't mind Whitley just because I foresee a daughter complex meltdown there. Bennett and Whitley are similar writers IMO. Bennett is more show-off clever, Whitley has more voices.

>I feel like Gillen would've been teasing something from Big 2 since he made a big deal of taking a break after Vader.
I'm pretty sure I remember Gillen saying that he's going to be writing a new Marvel book coming up.

>implying it wasn't the design that made popular
She only pulls in the fanart and cosplay. Gillen arguably made her worst by making her a wonder woman knock off and taking a moment of bitchyness to shulkie and making it that she is a dick to everybody for no reason. Ewing is saving the character, the positive thing Gillen did was giving her a new power.

There's a lot of people going on about "didn't they do the version of the character no one liked/wasn't it misogynist?" completely missing that any Casey book is not exactly aiming at the Gillen demographic. So many people on whatever 'side' in comics are completely myopic about demos they don't understand/aren't a part of.

>twitter.com/RaySonne/status/755072633603891200

> Mad about white people making comics about non white people
Bruh

This is the weirdest shit. They made the character, and the take on the character you love was also written by a white guy.

Gillen got her out of the toy box though. And set her up to be used for Ultimates. Ewing's capitalizing on the play but he couldn't do it without Gillen's set up

really? my bad.

won't somebody think of the fictional characters?

Not even close

Let's be real here, she was a nothing of a character in Vengeance. Just a generic "angry latina" flying brick with an alright design.

Gillen is single-handedly responsible for taking her from a one-off throwaway character that'll never show up again to a new Marvel mainstay.

that dude who did the War Machine story in Civil War anthology is a good guess for it...

I've really liked Casey's output these last couple of years so I'll check this out

>Joe Casey
WHERE THE FUCK IS ACCEL, JOE, YOU STONER PIECE A SHIT?

It's fun when you consider the protests for like, my coffeeshop AU, for example. So if that ran concurrently that would be okay, but this isn't?

Also the way for whoever is writing the Miss America book to one-up this is to introduce an America Vasquez in that book, clearly this has to get as meta as possible.

And she was drawn with a thong sticking out of her pants anyway!

Hate him for his Kate/Mac ship and his making Kate the focus for Mac (which is like Hulkling/Wiccan, and inevitably ruins one of the characters IMO) but like him for potential weird background ideas for America and the possibility of entertaining fury when his writing/daughterfu is criticized.

This is the most 90's Image Comix-ish thing I've seen in decades and I love it.
And I hate the current push of 90's comics bullshit... but this-- this falls right in line with the spirit of Image Comic's "Fuck Marvel" origins.

They need to get Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore to do a "Hotty Rodriguez: Demon Speeder" series while we're at it.

Yeah, I never understood that. In the very interview that he said that in, the concept art clearly showed her wearing a thong.

Gillen's was just as much of an angry latina despite his claim that he wouldn't write her that way. He just added backstory.

first arc she goes to Earth-526 and runs into America Whatevervez.

coffee au is such a weird hill these people are dying on. even cheers was set in a bar!

Only in the concept art. She didn't have that in the actual comic.

Vasquez on Chavez porn will be good.

Wasn't it Gillen who made her 100% lesbian? Honestly, I feel that's a large part of the attachment here. Very few lesbian characters in the same position.

is America even Latina? she's a cross dimensional alien

it's a mixed bag. but ideas beyond AMERIKATE OTP is a huge plus so I can probably deal.

Chavez will still have a dick, right?

The coffeeshop AU is so fascinating to me because it comes from very long-running fanfic communities, that do it in a wide variety of fandoms, but the person I see advocating it most extensively is Andy Wheeler, who doesn't ping me as 'in' that fandom in any way. It's like he's read about it from outside and has drawn hearts around the idea but never engaged with the reality.

Rereading the Ultimates trade, I forgot the 0 issue ended with Chavez being like "I'll take this down if they go evil" is she actually not in Ultimates Squared or is Rich full of shit?

Yes he made everybody except kate gay in YA
Nope and oddly Gillen kept the spanglish. Ewing is when that dropped.

I like her already.

Bet Rucka is realising he fucked up in not launching GRANDEUR LADY instead of coming back to DC right now.

or just Moon Girl, my favourite public domain superheroine and absolutely a not! Wonder Woman

Well she is on the cover but we don't know how civil war will effect them.

Considering that Divided teaser I can see why Rich assumed she's off.

was he hammering it before that death of fandom article that everyone got mad about?

Are Wonder Woman knock offs that common, I can't think of one besides Glory. There are tons of Superman ones and a few Batmen out there

Futa chavez is the only way

This. Gillen is decent but the best thing we could have for this character is Ewing. He was able to de-sue Chavez and is the only person who can put canon back into BENDIS shit and turn a leaded turd into a golden nugget.

>Bennet

I hope she stays the fuck away from any well-known comic series and keeps to her Victorian England lesbian bugwomen comic. That way her shlock is self-contained, especially if Vasquez will be lesbian like Chavez because Bennett shits the bed as soon as she can with punky dramaqueen lesbos with no plot and flimsy characters.

>Ewing America book is just continuity clean up

i could fuck with that.

Ewing really is the modern Busiek, isn't he?

Moon Girl is great don't tempt me to rant on about her. She only got like 6 issues ever. One of her villains was a witch riding a mermaid who was friends with a werewolf. Another was Satan as a gangster woman.

She comes from a line of queens in a hidden still-living Samarkand and got an amulet that made her invulnerable and undefeatable in battle, pretty much IMMEDIATELY after swearing she would never accept any man who couldn't defeat her in battle. This superb warrior prince guy she was crushing on just went and taught athletics at American colleges after that, but they teamed up occasionally.

The big thing about Ewing is he sees and is willing to tackle the insecurity and negativity in her attitudes along with the great, heroic parts. And his cosmic so far as been awesome in terms of themes so yeah, a Ewing America book would be A++ to me. Even his choice of making her girlfriend a normal human paramedic was clever.

I'm not your cuate, vato.

i'm not your vato, compa.

Why are people so obsessed with America Chaves? She is literally "Saucy Latina Lady" nº3586, why all the cult following for her? She is such a nothing characters.

THIGHS
H
I

S
seriously, that's most of it

Honestly I think comics need more saucy latina ladies.

>America Chavez
>America Vasquez
>America Perez
>America Lopez
>America Ramirez
>America Ibanez
>America Juarez
>America Martinez
>America Nunez
>America Gimenez
>America Suarez
>America Benitez
>America Mendez

I, personally, feel like every superhero team requires one sassy black lady telling them what to do.

the America in Vengeance was a very different character than the one we gotten from New Avengers and onward.

I still don't understand what you think they have to hide.

Thank fuck Johns avoided that stereotype.

So Casey is butthurt that they took his character, basically turned her into a new one and made her more popular (even though current Miss America is probably the shittiest character at Marvel right now) and is going to do his own Destroyer Duck in response?

Are you sure? I could have sworn it was in the comic too
