I remember reading somewhere about how combat sports do not actually prep you up for real hand-to-hand combat situations. If you train to fight with rules and only expect contact to ever happen under controlled circumstances, you'll have no leverage when put into a fast situation like a street brawl.
Your actual ability is both technique and the preparedness to be willing to use it on a threatening presence. Obviously this medalist couldn't, since he was surprised and hadn't prepared mentally for this contigency at all.
