Howard entered a brief golden era in the mid-late 00's when he went to satellite. Unfortunately, that all ended with Artie's suicide attempt. After Artie left the show Howard lost his buddy he'd talk to...of course no one wants to listen to Robin. This incident also fucked with Howard's psychology.
