Why is it that O'neil is able to write about Batman taking on some street gang or some b-list villain and make it as interesting as when other writers do stories that have Gotham being a virtual warzone with an a list villain or some big bad organization?

Is Dennis O'neil perhaps the greatest batwriter ever?

O'Neil is one of the most under appreciated writers in comics. He should be getting a check every time Ollie says something overly liberal in a tv show.

>O'Niel
>Englehart
>Dini
>Morrison
>Miller

These are THE quintessential Batman writers, right?

I'd add Grant too.

Grant, Moench and Barr too. Milligan and Lapham had short runs, but they wrote some of the best Bat stories.

It's because many writers are unable to make a story interesting if the stakes aren't ridculously high. Scott Snyder is the worst offender when it comes to this. Gotham was basically blown up and on fire for the entierty of his run, it was very, very stupid.

You need to read more O'neil batman comics.
Also his Batman was pretty much a martial arts comic, he is the best batman writer, but your post implies too many dumb shit

His role as an editor is under appreciated as well. He let lose Miller on both Daredevil and Batman and brought in some great creators for Batman in 80s and 90s.

Finger.

*loose

It's crazy how obviously the quality drops off in the years after he left as Bat-editor.

Most writers like to raise up the stakes and have their B/C list character take on universe ending threats and have other charterers point out in their own comic that they're 'stronger than Superman/smarter than Batman/Smarter than Reed Richards etc)

It's not just writers. Audiences don't think shit is interesting and stakes aren't high if there isn't a body count

Denny O'Neil is literally the best editor comics have had. People just think about his and Neal Adams run on Batman, but this was the guy who also hired Frank Miller to do Daredevil to begin.

He's literally too good for this world.

He was a driving force for a lot of good stuff that happened in the 70's and 80's. He's basically the man behind the modern Batman.

Sorry but best Editor was and probably will be Karen Berger.
2nd best Editor of Comic history would be a guy often miscredited aus a weiter. A guy named Stan Lee

*miscredited as a writer.

>people actually believing Morrison Batman is good

this place is full of retards

Stan Lee edited the entire line, while O'neil and initially Karen Berger edited a handful of books. They are completely different, user.

Shut up nigger.

Yeah you're one of them.

#REKT

>Stan Lee edited the entire line

Stan lee didnt do shit. In his OWN WORDS he didnt even read the comics.
