Preacher

I just read the entirety of this the other day, and I loved it.

However, when I watched the first couple of episodes of the show I hated them.

Anyone else feeling the same way about the show?

bump

They're both fantastic

Do you feel the show is a good adaptation of the comic though?

No, but it doesn't need to be to be a good show though.

While it's not a great adaptation, the show is pretty good. I lost my shit when he sent Arseface to hell, that nigga is never coming back

I dig both. The show takes liberties but it's still Damn good so I'm okay with it.

Cassidy vapes in the show.

I bet they won't even have the "Fuck Communism" lighter

I fucking LOVE the comics and despise the show.

The show is a terrible adaptation and meh on its own merits.

I'm still watching it to see where it goes, but man it's disappointing. Preacher seems like a comic that's very suited to film adaptation, it's a damn shame they decided to throw a lot of it out.

I feel like Cassidy secretly being an asshole was pretty sudden, as if they just needed a twist to keep the story going or something.

I've seen it posted here a lot and it looks funny but I don't really want to read a book where the art just goes completely to shit over time.

I dunno, you could definitely see the elements of it. The big thing is that he's not even really an ass hole, it's just that he's immortal and doesn't really have to deal with the consequences of what he does.
I still thought Jesse was being an ass hole to him in the end though.

I feel like the worst thing about the show is how they made Tulip a violent nut job. I really liked her character arc in the comic.

user, you need to watch the latest episode. i think you might be two episodes off. Btw the latest episode had serious Preacher vibes to it, at least on the Saint parts.

Jesse still redeemed him tho. Even though he's no longer a sickass vampire, he got another chance at life, one of the main themes in the series.

You're comparing it to the book which is the problem with most sourcefags, you can't separate the two.

A good adaption doesn't have to be faithful to book, it just has have the spirit, tone and themes of the book. Preacher is a good show.

I loved Hell

does he? literally every time I've seen him smoking on the show its been cigarettes

>he read all of Preacher in one day... or like, over two days...

I fucking doubt it.

Quit with the bullshit.

I loved the comic and have all the graphic novels. I saw the first episode and RAGE'd and then re-read the comics to calm my tits. Rereading the comics made me feel better about the adaptation, because there were several giant weird plot holes and strange shit that just wouldn't translate. I do have lots of "Aww, come the fuck ON" moments watching the show though. Like the Saint wanting that dude to sing, then shooting everyone in the Ratwater bar but then slicing that singer's head off last. And how the fuck did those dudes on the plane in the first episode know what Cassidy was??!

I'm super disappointed that they made Jesse into a complete smug dickweed who never apologizes for anything. He couldn't even bring himself to apologize for sending Eugene to hell.

I didn't get why Tulip just decided "Yeah we gon fuk" and did him in the car. Face in the window like "Yup whatever this is some boring ol' dickin right here." That made ZEEERO sense to me.

Yeah I feel that too. I think making her black was actually cool, but then totally reaming her backstory and implying some idiotic Bonnie & Clyde story between her & Jesse was utter fuckballs

Also what the fuck was with church lady feeding Mayor Gingerface to Cassidy? Dude gave her the D and watched her kids, why she gotta do him like that, made no sense to have her character cold bloodedly kill someone like that
Fucked up man

>Spirit, tone and themes of the book
Well let's see here, it's not a buddy road story, so it doesn't have the spirit; it's not an irreverent anti-religion comedy so not the tone; and so far it doesn't have the themes of standing up for what's right and being a good guy in a world with too many of the bad, so themes are out too.
Fucking casual.

Seriously? Literally ever person they met who knew him besides the fucking serial killer HATED him

I was enjoying it and totally sold on the tv show initially - I was even fine with the situation setting and most of the changes which were obviously forced on them by a TV budget. I was right with it up till the bit where they had John Custer beating his son...

At that point you just realise the showrunners don't know the source material as well as they claim they do and those other changes you've been fine with till then probably don't bode well any more either.

>That spoiler
They fucking WHAT?

Yup. beating him with a belt. I was like WAAAT

You read it. Looks like there'll be no Jodi, TC and Grandma required because they found someone else to be the bad influence on his earlylife.

Pic related. Need to replace God's face with the producers.

What's the context? Is he shown to be an abusive asshole, or is it more "dammit Jesse, it's clear that you're not going to learn anything unless someone smacks ya now and then"?

No, but then again, i'm not a colossal retarded faggot.

He belts Jesse while remarking that the other children look up to him and that it's important he set an appropriate example.

Nope, regular beatings delivered just 'coz. Should note that in the show we said character isn't a returning Vietnam veteran, but the town's local preacher.

Well fuck that.

I live the show. If it was a lose adaption, I would be feeling the same way I do about "The Walking Dead" since I would know where the plot is heading episode by episode. I feel it's a worthwhile adaption, it's a remix of the Preacher story, with some new elements sprinkled here and there. It feels like a show made by fans for fans, which is what it is. I'm sure Garth must be jumping out of his skin episode by episode.

> spirit, tone and themes of the book
it has none of that. The only moment, at least IMO, that kinda got those right is when Odin went to the church with his boys to drag Jesse out. That scene is fantastic.

>Adapt show
>change main character's awesome and television friendly backstory for some cliche bullshit to add an anti religion slant that is already so heavily laid on through the inherent plot

I don't know how much influence he has but Seth's face just fit perfectly.

I can kinda bear with the change, but when they finally use shit from the source material, it's fucking retarded

>tulip mentioning John wayne as Jesse's fave movie star when Jesse did horrible shit throughout the show
>that retarded "till the end of the world" flashback bit.

But my biggest gripe is that they didn't even get the Word of God right. that shit i can't deal with.

So you would recommend it? I've been kinda hesitant specifically because of how much I disliked the show.

Rogen and Franco should be the sexual investigators

>You alright Clive?
>Ah, not really. Preacher shot my dick off.

To me the show is a perfect example of 'While it's not quite the same as the source material, I can still enjoy it for what it is.'. That being said, it's a bit of a slow burn but I have a feeling that it's one of those shows that needs to be binged watched once the season is done.

did they try to merge story elements, and combine Arseface and Jesse's backstories?

Indeed, user. Indeed. I am hanging in there but honestly quite disappointed with how it's going.

Oh god YES. The show is a bullshit ripoff compared to the comic. The comic's got its ups and downs but there's a lot of solid fun to be had.

OMG YES. Rogen in a flatcap raping Starr's asshole

Eeeeehhh kinda. Everyone is now from Annville originally. Sheriff Root is a fat idiot and not a scary abusive dickbag (which begs the question why did Arseface shoot himself?). Jesse is the son of the Annville preacher. No Gran'ma, no Jodi, no TC. Tulip grew up with Jesse and has Loved Him Forever. Odin runs the local meat and power plant which supports the town. It's all jumbled together, IDK. [/spoilers]

Root's still alive and he loves his son, Arseface. The supporting characters are all fun, the main cast are the ones they fucked up, except Cassidy of course, he's still the loveable asshole that we all know.

I read the comics up through all the family torture porn. This and Y: The Last Man are the reason why I don't trust fucking anything recommended by Sup Forumsmblr.

> why did Arseface shoot himself
he got rejected by the vegetable girl. shot her and then himself.

You pussy, you tapped out early. You didn't even get to the power-crazed near-midget with the literal meat-fucking fetish, and his Nazi-worshipping crazy hot dominatrix assistant

>got triggered and had to quit a comic
>calls someone else tumblr

>Got rid of Grandma and Jodi
Irredeemable shit

I swear to god, if Tulip's dad isn't a Republican, rednecked, kindhearted gun-nut I'll eat my hat.

>black father
>staying around

They didn't. They've repeatedly shown scenes of Jesses dad on his knees at night before his head gets blown off, and one scene where two men (who we only see the feet of due to not appearing till next season) taking his dad beforehand.

Anyone know what these scenes are about? I don't remember them from the comic. Do you think it might be something that blows up right before god appears in the finale wasting the town?

>Johnson was to write with Deutch directing. Impressed with Johnson's pilot script, HBO had him write the series bible for the first season. Johnson originally planned "to turn each comic book issue into a single episode" on a shot-for-shot basis. "I gave [HBO] the comics, and I said, 'Every issue is an hour'. Garth Ennis said 'You don't have to be so beholden to the comic'. And I'm like, 'No, no, no. It's got to be like the comic'."

Reminder that we almost had an accurate preacher 10 years ago.

>on hbo
Jesus
But that is kinda shit, we don't need shot for shot minute for minute

>Oh god YES.
This seems very enthusiastic.

No. It can be done. I did it myself a few weeks ago.
I was laid up in the hospital and I had a ton of comic on my laptop, and spent the weekend reading all of Preacher. Even the minis. It's not that hard to do.

Sorry, meant to post the rest

>Johnson changed his position, citing new storylines conceived by Ennis. "Well, there would be nothing new to add if we did that, so Garth [Ennis] and I have been creating new stories for the series," he said. "I love the book so much and I was telling Garth that he has to make the stories we are coming up with as comics because I want to see them."

70+ issues in a single day is not impossible, even uncommon.

What's the problem? That's like 2k pages?

who do you think killed his dad then?

>Looks like there'll be no Jodi, TC and Grandma required because they found someone else to be the bad influence on his earlylife.
Are you some kind of moron?
Seriously.
Jessie's dad wasn't an abusive father/ He got caught doing something he shouldn't have been doing, so he whipped him with a belt. He said that Jessie needed to set an example, and not be a kid who got into trouble and turn out bad later in life. That why he did it, not because he loved beating up his son.

And did you not see the episode where we had the flashback to when Jodie and TC showed up, killed his father and took Jessie away?
You're either an idiot or you're just spouting shit to troll people.

God I hope you're right user

Well, it's definitely part of Odin's power plant but IDK what else

I cry everytim

It worked great for the 1st Sin City movie

>Nope, regular beatings delivered just 'coz.
Bullshit.

Don't forget the Angelville tattoo

I fucking love Preacher. First time I read it was on a church youth group trip (HAH) and was totally confused and entranced cus it was out of order and I came in on the exposition bit where the angel is talking about how he banged the demoness "hers was the beauty of blades in an alley" "our juices rained on the inferno" etc and was like OMG WTF is this fucking crazy bullshit this is the exact best thing to be reading on a trip where they look at me crooked if I swear (best part was I was 16 and the kid I borrowed it off of was 12)

Also Preacher was the first comic to make me physically nauseous with "Odin and his meat. Alone with his meat. {/spoiler] and if they DON'T do that scene at some point in the show I will be very "Rogen I am disappoint"

Well I'm glad you're excited. I don't get enthusiastic about things anymore.

>No Gran'ma, no Jodi, no TC.
Bullshit again.
Two guys show up (in flashbacks) drag Jessie and his father outside, kill the father and presumably take Jessie away.
One even have the Angelville tattoo on his arm.

Sheeeit you have a point. I feel like that's been totally drowned out by flashback sequences of just Jesse & his dad though.

If Jody, TC and Gran'ma fit in somewhere, it can't be anywhere near the way it was in the comics where Jesse lived with them from age 4 and was raised by them from age 16ish to his 20s Plus Gran'ma would never have let li'l Tulip around li'l Jesse, gotta keep dat line pure 'n white

For some reason i always thought those are Odin's men.

>Odin and his meat. Alone with his meat.

You gotta wonder.
SOMEBODY out there in this world must have built one of these.

Why do you think people get jobs at butcher shops?

Why not?
Dad failed as a Preacher, they take him to Grandma's and she keeps him at Angelville until he's "ready" to go back and take his place.
So he's a couple of years older. Big deal.

Good job,
Really good pay.
Free meat.
Doesn't have to be sexual. It's not all about sticking your dick in a slab of prime rib.

It's not like becoming a shoe salesman.

Al please.

I literally had to put the book down and walk away and come back 10 min later it made me so grossed out

I was legit impressed that a 2D image could make me so physically ill (especially cos I didnt have much reaction to the realistic gore & faces being shot off and all) haha

Mmmaybe. I hope you're right user. Because Preacher without the dynamic fucked up duo of Jody and TC is just not really Preacher.

>I literally had to put the book down and walk away and come back 10 min later it made me so grossed out
>I was legit impressed that a 2D image could make me so physically ill
Huh. Looks hilarious to me.

Well I was like 16 at the time so take it with a grain of salt and all. It just makes me LOL now

Time to put your depravity to the test. Fap to it.

its not really an adaptation though?
I stopped watching after episode 4 (went on vacation then had some busy work weeks and just lost track), and very little of those opening episodes are similar to the beginning of the book.

I'm not sure of the term, but they're very much doing like Fox did with Lucifer but trying to stay closer to the source material. They have the characters and some general plot/story similarities, but its not going to follow the exact nature of the books.

Bruh I'm a sick lil puppy with a whole lot of fucked up kinks but I do not think I could fap to that

Somebody sure does tho

both are unsufferable angloamerican trash

She show is a different animal altogether. It does, however, get better as it goes on. Consider it "Elseworlds Preacher". Cassidy and the autistic angels are my favourites.

Sure he vapes, yeah sure he has yet to say anything about vaping, or even vape at all.

He was vaping because that was all that that church chick would allow him to do
