New to comics and looking for Batman (and Batman related ie. Catwoman, Batgirl, etc) recommendations.
>Year One - Enjoyed it. >Arkham Asylum (serious house) - Loved the illustration though the writing was kinda.. abstract? >The Killing Joke - Enjoyable. >The Dark Knight Returns - Not sure why but I just never felt invested in it and though it seemed incredibly competent all around I found myself bored. >Catwoman: When in Rome was nice but didn't love with it.
Not sure where to go from here. I prefer the smaller start & finish stories as opposed to long ongoing plots. Preferably want something that has as little to do with the rest of the DC universe as possible (just not at all into Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern etc)
Brayden Jones
Honest you're at a point were you can pick up anything that looks interesting. You can jump into specific eras or look into specific creators.
Brandon Stewart
If you're into Catwoman read the Brubaker run.
Gotham Central is required reading for you.
Levi Nelson
Okay I'll be sure to check out both. Okay but nothing specific jumps out to you?
What about Batgirl? Has she had any good graphic novels or trade paperbacks?
Lincoln Peterson
Maybe the Long Holloween or the Nightfall series? I'm not sure if those would be longer than what you're looking for though.
Isaiah Powell
Catwoman: Brubaker run Batgirl/Robin: Year One Gotham Central Grayson Long Halloween/Dark Victory Grayson Batman the Black Mirror
Morrison's entire run: Batman and Son The Black Glove RIP Batman and Robin vol 1-3 Time and the Batman Return of Bruce Wayne Batman Inc

You also need this in your life.
Carson Hill
and No Man's Land and Ego and Paul Dini's Detective Comics run
Chase Young
>Robin Year One >Batgirl Year One >Batman Black Mirror It's Dick Grayson as Batman but it'll still a good story >Batwoman Elegy and vol 1-4 Creative team changes like 25 issues in, you'll know when you get there >Grayson
For something a little longer >Cass' Batgirl run >Steph's Batgirl run >Robin by Dixon >Birds of Prey by Dixon Simone's Birds of Prey is good up until the relaunch, but she includes more characters that aren't bat related beyond Black Canary >Gotham Central >Dixon's Nightwing and/or Tomasi's Nightwing >Brubaker's Catwoman
Nolan King
>Catwoman
Brubaker's run Valentine's run Selina's Big Score Gotham City Sirens Winick's run (kinda shit, but really good art) The Bat and the Cat Catwoman Defiant Catwoman/Oracle Secret Files and Origins
>Batman
Honestly there's so much fucking Batman to recommend it's ridiculous. There was a torrent a while back I downloaded that had the majority of Bat-related books all labelled in chronological order since about 2000, I would look for that, and then also just look up classic Batman runs and stories. Keep an eye out for writers like O'Neil, Englehart, Grant, Moench, Morrison, Dini, Miller, etc.
Robert Bailey
I think I might actually try this first just for nostalgia's sake.
Thanks all for the recs. Time to dive in.
Daniel Adams
I should probably start saving this in a text file due to how often it comes up
This is a "canon ordering" as opposed to publication date

You gotta read All Star Batman and Robin
Henry Sanchez
Don't recommend that to someone who's just getting into Bat comics. It'd be like someone asking what Star Wars movies they should watch and you tell them Spaceballs.
Chase Ramirez
Ok read ASBAR after reading some of the other recommendations
Luis Parker
That sure is comprehensive
Do any other comic characters compare to this in terms of quality stories? Spider comics maybe?
Jaxson Wright
I get it's not everyones cup of tea, but I really enjoyed Batman: Earth One.
Eli Gomez
based on what you've already read: Long Halloween trilogy
Joshua Ortiz
Birds of Prey and the rest of Dixon Nightwing are worth putting on there. Robin Son of Batman and Valentine Catwoman for New 52. Rebirth Batgirl is good
Jason Murphy
Daredevil has had consistently good runs: Miller, Bendis, Brubaker, Waid, Soule (kind of)
Vertigo Hellblazer
Swamp Thing?
Gabriel Barnes
are u asking for spidey comics?
Jace Stewart
Read it mostly for the memes.
Elijah Morris
Spider-Man doesn't have a consistency of good runs unlike characters as Daredevil. In the other hand, his best runs like the Roger Stern and JMS ones are worth reading.
Jacob Turner
Why do you include Heart of Hush on your list but not Hush?
Noah Phillips
Why do you include Heart of Hush on your list but not Hush? Wouldn't it make sense for OP to read Hush first (if he hasn't) before he reads Heart of Hush?
Jason Cruz
Hush is a bad comic.
Why would you want to read a bad comic?
If you're forcing yourself to read bad comics just because they're "important" or they star your favorite characters, then you need to take a break and rethink your approach to comics, because you're doing it all wrong.
Alexander Morgan
>Birds of Prey and the rest of Dixon Nightwing are worth putting on there I didn't include those because I kind of thought they were just ok. I think Dixon and Simone in general are kind of overrated.
Wyatt Morris
Because Hush is not very good, while HoH is fantastic.Plus you don't really need to read the former to understand the latter.
Owen Green
It could have been a great story without that slept her way through med school bullshit.
Sebastian White
Being a dumb slut is literally an integral part of her character.
Evan Williams

Threads like these make me wonder why Sup Forums doesn't have a sticky.
Parker Thomas
You know what you must do
Blake Thompson
>Four of A Kind >Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive >Hush >War Drums/Games/Crimes >Identity Crisis
This list is terrible. It's like they only read events and think that means they're the best stories.
Alexander Gomez
>implying Sup Forums would ever agree on what to put in the sticky
Jaxon Howard
yeah but I mean surely theres a required reading list that you could boil down to a few select things like Year One for instance.
Easton Turner
Just make a sticky with this as an introduction for new readers.
It even has Amazon links and download links, so it's automatically more useful than almost every other list we've ever made.
Oliver Robinson
You know damn well that's not what people are looking for when they first get into comics.
Dylan Miller
Good.
This doesn't overwrite or overrule anyone's tastes. If someone is looking for something else, this doesn't prevent them from finding that. It just makes people aware that there are more options out there, and it shows them where Sup Forums obtains its comics (Amazon and DDL sites like MediaFire).
