I didn't really get what he had to be ashamed about.

It was bullshit. It's a movie which makes sex addiction attractive, and sanitizes both its symptoms and its effects. All the women he fucks are stunning, he fucks them like a porn star, he apparently has no need to work, and his rock bottom moment is the first time he does anything with a guy - which any sex addict will tell you is still amateur hour compared to how extreme people usually get in the search for new stimuli. This opening scene might as well be a music number. There is a movie in sex addiction, but this wasn't it.

This movie's soundtrack is so fucking great
Reminds me of "Journey to the Line" from Zimmer,or Inception's "Time"

He felt shame because he and his sister were sexually abused (they probably were forced to fuck each other as well) and that caused him to be some sex freak (same with his sister who likes going after daddies cock (she fucked a married guy with kids)) and now he's addicted to the sex without being able to feel any emotional connection to the person. So addicted he is constantly thinking about sex and even wasting money on whores and download nasty porn at fucking work

Just once, you want to experience something that happens to no one, ever, outside of movies?

plus the fact that at the stage he was at porn would have been inherently more stimulating than anything he was getting irl

but they had to make him at least somewhat normie to appeal to people

normies don't want to watch a movie about a depressed aspie neet porn addict. which makes up 99% of them

This is probably what was meant, which only increases my revulsion from the film. He's using the specter of abuse for melodramatic weight without considering its reality. Also, most sex addicts weren't abused as kids, they're just people with addictive personalities whose thing is sex. It's Pat Robertson-tier thinking, and it's only possible for a liberal like McQueen to sustain because he's totally dishonest.

A guy with his money could get everything you see in the most extreme porn. But then the film wouldn't have helped him in the prestige faux-arthouse wing of the mainstream film industry.

>you want to experience something that happens to no one, ever, outside of movies

Doesn't everybody?

In real life, guys who act like this get maced with the quickness.

Yes the premise is bullshit we know.
Like most Sup Forums hates this shit because they make him appear as a tragic character when he can gets whatever he wants in life.

Hell i can bet that like 90% of Sup Forums is probably addicted to porn anyway.

>things that never happened IRL

>when he can gets whatever he wants in life.

the whole point of the movie is that no amount of career of financial success can help him overcome his emotional pain and hyper sexuality.

that is what the movie is about. the tragedy is that he has so much going for him but still fails to be a regular human being.

not if they look like fassbender

True, but if you're gonna wish for a fictional scenario to come true, why stop there.

I'm not sure if OP understands that 99/100, in real life, that scene stops after some eye contact unless there's a non-creepy approach.

I hate it because it makes sex addiction look like a way of being privileged whilst being interestingly melancholic about it, which is both dishonest and a prostitution of the suffering it's purporting to represent.

Which only works as a message if we handwave the abuse subtext, which seems to only exist so that McQueen can, disgustingly, tantalize us with the prospect of an incest scene he's too mainstream to actually deliver on (while also basically ripping off the plot structure of Cassavetes' Love Streams - compulsive assman with no real day job receives sudden and inconvenient visit from the only woman he really loves, his sister, to whom he has a strange and unresolved relationship).

I dunno man, if he started to talk to her, maybe.

>tantalize us with the prospect of an incest scene

what

I've seen men check women out on trains like this before and the woman respond to it. The men do look annoyingly handsome though. Never seen the whole getting up and running after though that was creepy.

Her behavior around him in the kitchen scene, plus a bunch of other moments, are all setting up titillation. On some level, we expect them to fuck, but finally that would make his situation too creepy and damaged to be enviable, and casting a handsome actor as a rich guy whose addiction takes the form of having sex with a ready supply of beautiful women is about creating a palatable fantasy. McQueen doesn't, for example, have him going to seedy swingers' clubs and queuing up to plow a series of ordinary-looking women in darkened rooms. He doesn't have him using gay "tearooms". It's all kept fairly upscale and stylized.

>Never seen the whole getting up and running after though that was creepy.

That's the part I meant.

to people like you anyway

Why is she so needy?

And then what ? You're back to square one.

You seem to conflate porn addiction with sex addiction.

No I don't, I'm referring very clearly to real circumstances of sex addiction, I don't know where you're getting the idea of porn addiction at all.

It's like when a rich person commits suicide, and people ask "why the hell would you kill yourself when you had so much money?" He was really good at picking up women, but after a while it just wasn't enough. He may as well have been a vampire. Able to seduce and ensnare women, but in the end totally alone.

Not really, no. Name me a rich person who committed suicide who hadn't either been recently bankrupted or informed of a terminal diagnosis. Also, this movie is wankfodder garbage, trivializing a real problem.

He was ashamed because he had become so desensitized to sex that he could no longer have functional relationships with people (whether with his sister or the woman he dated). He was an addict and his addiction was ruining himself and those around him.

Why would not being able to have "good" sex fuck up your relationship with your sister?

The only harm his addiction caused was getting that guy fired for porn, when he actually didn't do the porn watching.

>he and the sister were abused as kids
source
i thought it was left ambiguous, like the relationship with her is complicated that much is obvious it didn't come up anywhere what exactly happened right? am i missing something

Don't be so naive. Sexuality is, along with survival instinct, the most dominant drive in human nature. In a society where food and water are constantly available, there is no incentive salience more rewarding to human experience than sex. It is the most powerful motivational drive that is regularly experienced. Disfunction of a person's sexuality, therefore, means disfunction of the limbic system and of a person's natural reward process.

Fassbender's character was a pleasure addict. Addicted to the dopaminergic rush of risky, frivolous sex. Dopamine addiction, whether from drugs, alcohol, sex, can drastically affect patterns of behaviour. Emotions become blunted, self-expression becomes increasingly difficult, risk assessment gets tossed aside, people become frustrated easily and are quick to anger. These signs occur in pretty much all patterns of addictive behaviour.

Your sexuality doesn't exist in a vacuum, it's a pattern of behaviour--a habit. Like all habitual activities, it bleeds into other areas of life. The reason he attacked his sister earlier in the film is because she interrupted his fap session: that is, she got in the way of his high. The reason why he berated her later in the film (which resulted in her attempted suicide) is because he was frustrated by his inability to have normal sex earlier (it was also an act of projection since he criticised her sexual behaviour with his boss despite his own evidence sexual disfunction). His sex addiction was the underlying cause of his character flaws and of his deteriorating relationship with his sister.

You're a fucking moron if you think rich people only commit suicide due to losing their riches. Seriously, grow the fuck up.

Interesting, thanks for sharing user

>I want to experience this
A woman running from you after stared at her for several minutes?
Don't be modest user, I'm sure it's happened to you before.
