Question for artists: What do you wish to improve at? What have you improved at recently?

On the same note as those animations I've posted about I've also been working on album art for each song composed for the soundtrack by Skolskoly. I limited myself to finishing each one in a matter of a few hours so I don't spend loads of time with them. i feel like this first one actually turned out pretty good. I want to thank whoever that user was who recommended I totally eliminate gradients other than in the glasses a while back, this looks way better.

This ain't gonna end well....

I'd like to improve on drawing naked feet.

>What do you wish to improve at?
Dynamic poses, anatomy in general, and facial expressions.
>What have you improved at recently?
Colour, probably.

Being a better person.

Foot fag leave this place!!

I'd like to improve my facial expressions, particularly how pronounced they are. I shy away from being too bold with expressions and I worry it makes my drawings flat/boring.

I've improved my pace to complete finished, quality pieces, so that's exciting at least.

hands

also, hey new here. any tips from you guys that maybe aren't mentioned in the above posts? I want to seriously get into making comics.

Far from a footfag actually, I just wish I knew how to draw feet better since I don't have much practice on it.
And I admittedly tend to hide them whenever I draw a picture.

General tips aren't much use in my experience. There's an infinite amount of information, but how much of it is relevant to your situation?

Comics are about learning from your mistakes.
Start making comics, short and fast ones preferably, and figure out where you're at. Then you'll be able to figure out what areas you need advice in.

thank you! I'll give this a shot.

Anatomy, backgrounds, expressions, composition. The usual stuff.
I think my colors/lineart have been looking better lately, and I've been getting faster so....

I'd like to improve the way I depict action sequences and dynamic movement. It's a weakness of mine.

Probably obvious, but depending on how little experience you have, you might want to look into Scott McCloud's books for a general understanding of how comics function as a medium too. Making Comics is a pretty good starting point if you're largely unfamiliar with working in the medium.

From there, make an effort to examine your own favorite comics and try to figure out why the things they're doing work. If you've never actually thought about it much, you can learn a lot about pacing, paneling and the like by examining the works of others with a critical eye.

And like the previous user said, draw comics! Trying to study and absorb knowledge about them won't do much if you aren't putting it into practice.

You've drawn porn, haven't ypu?

I want to color/shade/render better, but just can't grasp the concept for some ungodly reason, I also been trying to get better at anatomy, mainly hips and arm anatomy

>Have writefag friend
>he wrote an undertale fanfiction
>wants me to turn it into a comic
>refuses to refine and simplify it down to a script with just dialogue and important visuals
>demands I read his fucking fanfiction
It's been about 8 months and I still can't make it past the third paragraph of his shit. I don't even want to go back and forth and do thumbs for it, it's like every other paragraph has needless information that doesn't even further the story visually.

Why are you friends with this person?

Just tell him to fuck off if he can't give you a proper script. Artists have more power than writers so you can tell him to eat shit. Nobody else would be willing to write a comic based off prose so you've got him by the balls.

*shrug* I do pinup-y nudes now and again. I leave the explicit stuff to people who are better or worse artists than me. There's nothing stupider than badly-drawn porn.

>undertale fanfiction
>make it into a comic
literally why

I need to increase speed and nit be lazy, takes me WAYWAY too long to draw out the type if epic shit I truly wanna do, not the shitty vidya gag shit I l've been doing.

I mean I could always improve art -wise, I'm good as I need to be (upper webcomic tier, subpar compared to an actual pro) right now, I just feel like I need to do something grand, not just another meh-kinda-funny-sure webcomic.

Tell him you need to get paid or fuck off.

I really want to improve on perspective in general, and get a better grasp of foreshortening for human figures.
I've gotten better at keeping characters consistently on model recently, though.

baby steps are still steps user

There's no part of my art that I don't wish to improve, but honestly, my art is good enough that improving technical stuff like perspective or anatomy or color or whatever isn't my main issue.

Instead, I think my big problem is a lack of clear vision when I'm planning pages, which is more a problem of writing than art. Every page is a slog because for every minute I spend actually drawing, I spend ten trying to figure out what I should draw, and I'm constantly starting pages over because I find out my original idea didn't work after all.

Lately I've been focusing on improving my lineart and gesture, because it will let me better communicate my intentions in my sketch, and being able to draw comics pages that look okay without having to spend over 10 hours on polish will let me build up page-composition mileage much faster.

WIP of the next page!

can i make up for mediocre quality with ridiculous quantity?

Yes, but be sure your quality is ACTUALLY mediocre and not terrible like

I know people like this. Once people know you can draw, you'll get all these half-baked ideas thrown at you because people expect you to draw their shit.

Ooh burn!

Can someone drop a Discord invite?

i really like the dewd's artstyle but i hope he takes criticism better in the future

absolutely. has just a bit of hanna barbera to her. she's small and cute right? something about her legs and how quickly they taper off make her look short. in fact she looks just like a cute 4'10" friend of mine.

dumbass, if he was into feet he'd be good at them.
some of us are. we can help you.

great topic
i feel like with enough study and practice I can get good at nearly anything, but my problem now is it never occurs to me to study and/or practice those things, because they only halfway exist in my mind. When I'm in mid comic-draw I go into obvious-easy-samey-camera-angle mode and only after it's too late and it all looks nice but boring do I realize "oh I should have varied that up a bit"
I have to get more playful I think.

2. remember*
Sora's expression in panel 3 is fantastic
Gotta keep those internal monologues internal, little weirdo
The big hand in panel 8 is looking pretty good, but next time you're in that position, remember to align the wrist with the non-thumb side of the palm. like Timon's hands, remember?
That's a pretty good joke, though the dialogue's a little redundant. it should be EITHER i saw that coming, or in hindsight that was inevitable. hindsight IS seeing it coming.

hi guys can you tell me why i fell this is shit even for amateur

Studying isn't something you should do in your comic pages, it's something you should do on the side.
Deadline pressure paralyzes the kind of thought processes that let you come up with new solutions rather than defaulting to old ones, so you need to set aside time dedicated to studying, rather than producing a finished piece of art.
I suggest you make a list of the things you want to improve and work on those for 30 minutes every day. Perhaps spend that time reworking panels from your comic that you weren't happy with.

well the point is I never remember to use what I practiced
basically I need to work on my scene composition, or my creativity therewith.

is it because they're french?

I'm from the last thread. Is it possible to get a Discord invite? I'm trying to build a cast, but I feel bad if I spam a bunch of pictures in this thread.

Well it features relatively poor fundamentals - weak anatomy, use of perspective, etc - yet the linework and grey tones have clear effort put into them, which results in the whole thing feeling unbalanced. Without strong fundamentals the extra effort put into the rendering stands out, almost like it's attempting to mask the imperfections but instead having the opposite effect.

I'd hesitate to call it shit, but it is in an uncomfortable middle ground.

Should you put nsfw fan art in your fan art gallery even if your comic is strictly sfw?

i see no reason not to, but it depends what you want for your comic site
you could put a warning i spose

Yeah, just stick it behind a "warning, NSFW" link, unless if the comic's intentionally kid friendly

discord.gg/shrKg

Introduce yourself when you join.

What this user said, make it a little hard to find if your worried about people thinking it's weird, lots of warnings and rings and hoops just to look at it.

Absolutely not. If your comic is sfw, don't put porn on your site. It's common fucking sense.

>discord.gg/shrKg

Is it worth joining the discord? I have some things I'd like to go over in more of a reserved setting than the /hyw/ thread? What do they talk about over there, their comic, process, etc.?

it's the opposite of common sense

im this guy ---> tapastic.com/series/94-knots

Im thinking of moving into black and white or other 2 color renderings for most of the story so I can crank it out, and every once in a while going balls out on the art

I'm also considering ditching the linear time format and sort of moving to a more "short story model" of little one shots happening in these chars life and universe, stuff that can be appreciated on its own or as part of the larger story

thoughts? right now ive been doing this thing off on for like 2 years and just about nothing has happened really

t. a retard

we talk about chicken tendies and waifus mostly

ColdFusion, please stop with the passive-aggressive attitude anytime anyone doesn't share your views on how an artist should approach controversial subjects.
At the very least post arguments to support your position, rather than just going "nuh uh you're stupid".

shut up bones

burden of support's on you, mate.
and there's nothing passive aggressive, you're just wrong

It's cute when absolute retards think they're right about something.

Improved my penwork a lot in a single picture, now I need to work on my coloring

Unfortunately, I'm colorblind so it's not easy when I see certain colors as completely different than normal people

I'm not that guy, I'm just tired of you constantly trying to start shit.

How colorblind, exactly? They make glasses nowadays that can help with some types of red-green mixups.
Other than that, you could try to work with digital coloring, where you can just check the numbers if you're in doubt.

the intention was not trying to start shit, but end it before it becomes a thing.
if you've got a better idea for how to express "I'm opposing you trying to hivemind bully someone into your 'common sense' but don't need to say anything else beyond disapproval because that sort of speaks for itself when the issue at hand is universal assent" I'd be happy to try out your preferred phrasing

Please explain how not putting porn on your sfw comic's fan art page is the opposite of common sense. Go ahead, I haven't had a good laugh in a while.

your color choices are really interesting, I can definitely tell what color things are meant to be, but you're placing blue and pink right next to each other as if they form a gradient when they don't, and I think it actually looks marvelous

>porn
>nsfw fan art
Porn is a whole different thing entirely. This is the internet we're talking about.

oh i see now thanks i thought it was rendering but it was the fundamentals i will work on that after the contest

How about "I don't see how that's common sense, user, could you explain why you think it's a bad idea? Here's why I think the way I think."

>porn
>controversial subject

lol, wut? What is this? Tumblr? The Taliban?

That sounds like it would very much 'start things'. That's the opposite of what I want.

Thank you user!

This fabric sheet is just what I needed by the way, I've been watching alot of dangan ronpa recently and I really liked how the clothes were drawn, and this is sure to help out!

They're the same thing you pedantic retard.

So what you want is for people to stop voicing opinions you disagree with?
You should probably just ignore them then.

None of these posts
would have happened if you'd just ignored

Google drive permanently deleted my work folders and there's no way of retrieving them. I don't even remember what all was in them and how much I lost but I think I'm gonna be sick.

I'd keep them seperate, especially if the comic is 'strictly' sfw.

However, I'd also consider setting up a different blog or tumblr where nsfw stuff can be posted.

a pedantic? where does it say anything about him liking loli

maybe you should learn your vocabulacy more

I fail to see how all those replies to my reply are my fault. I'm not going to let a post like that go ignored unless I have an assurance nobody is taking them seriously.
Now as for posts like , , and , no need to reply to those, they already take care of themselves.

Never put all your eggs in one basket, user. Sorry you had to find out this way but it's for the best. Multiple backups, always.

>I fail to see how all those replies to my reply are my fault.
Responsibility is taken, not given. If you don't want to change your behavior to avoid the future it affects, then sure, keep going and tell yourself it's not your fault when things always turn out the same way.

> I'm not going to let a post like that go ignored unless I have an assurance nobody is taking them seriously.
Are you under the impression that someone going "nuh uh" at a statement makes people take it less seriously?

Nothing is only one person's doing though, it's all done by the collective. You can "stay out of it" and say "well at least -I- didn't contribute to the problem" but that accomplishes squat other than your own sense of smugness. If you actually care about outcomes, you do something.

You misunderstand, the goal isn't nobody taking it seriously, nobody-taking-it-seriously is a condition under which adding your dissent is no longer necessary and/or makes you look like a twat. The goal is making the existence of dissent clear.

>You can "stay out of it" and say "well at least -I- didn't contribute to the problem" but that accomplishes squat other than your own sense of smugness.
You say that, but it's pretty clear we wouldn't have spent the past two hours talking about it and shitting up the thread if you'd just ignored the post.
And posting certainly didn't achieve anything.

>The goal is making the existence of dissent clear.
And all the previous posts disagreeing wasn't clear enough dissent?

What previous posts? if I accidentally said something that was already said, then fuck me.

In any case, I could say the same for everyone who replied to me. if they'd left it alone, everything would have been perfect. and that was the intention.

>In any case, I could say the same for everyone who replied to me.
Again.
Responsibility is taken, not given.
Why are you expecting others to do something for you that you could just as easily do yourself?

shut the fuck up you goddamn hippie libertarian personal responsibility does not exist and i want to force you to use trigger warnings

because while the broad strokes of the situation might be the same, the details are different enough to demand different actions. I'm expecting others to do something different from what I chose not to do.
If you think they're the same, then it's you who should take your own advice.
and none of this merited this much fucking discussion. Or any.

I'm pretty sure responsibility is given _and_ taken. The more you give people, the more they'll rise to the occasion and take it. It's harder to take what hasn't been given.

wow this thread is fucking embarrassing and I hate you all this has nothing to do with anything and it's unbearable to read.
take this argument to an email or something

Who wants some quick fanart

I drew someone's monster character they posted but I forget all names involved, I just liked the look of the dude and monster boys/transformations are up my alley

> the details are different enough to demand different actions
No they're not though.

>and none of this merited this much fucking discussion. Or any.
Then why do you keep discussing it?

I suppose it would more accurate to say that no responsibility can be forced upon someone who doesn't want to take it, but that doesn't sound as poignant.

because what you're doing merits discussion, and what you're saying is well-thought-out enough to deserve an intelligent response. also so future derailleur can be avoided.

Can't help but notice you're avoiding my question. How is expecting other people to not reply to you to avoid shitfests any different from expecting you not to reply to other people to avoid shitfests?

> also so future derailleur can be avoided.
What in the world makes you think that's going to happen?

it's like "no tagbacks"
does that help? because anything further would be shitting things up even further.

That's completely irrational. There's nothing special about your first reply. You were adding to the shit heap from the very start.

There was a line somewhere, and at some point I crossed it.

This storyline has been complete Loss-tier irredeemable garbage. Delete it from your archives and pretend it never happened.

would a cleaver across the face remove your entire eye like that? leaving a big gaping spiraling socket? holy shit.

Why is he bleeding out of his nose?
Shouldn't his hair be sticking to his face?
I don't think the eye socket is quite that deep.

It's neat though.

I really oughta pull my camera out more, but backgrounds take forever.

Oh wow, I really didn't expect anyone to ever draw my characters! Thank you so much, I'm flattered!

He's a big guy.

Is that girl pregnant?
