Why does Brazil have such a shitty tiny army for a country of their size, population and economy?

Why does Brazil have such a shitty tiny army for a country of their size, population and economy?

They have 8th highest GDP in the world, and a population of 200 million, yet they are still fielding outdated equipment from world war 2 era tanks.

Meanwhile Russia which has less than half their population and GDP has a much larger and more advanced armed forces.

What are they going to use such an army for? Russia has an army because they're retarded and keep antagonizing their neighbors, everybody in latin america gets along well enough that war isn't even a possibility.

you don't need advanced armed forces to fight favelas

Better than yours, muhammad

Imagine how much stronger Brazil could be if they annexed Venezuela or the Guyanas or Argentina or something.

Also its a matter of prestige. Nobody takes you seriously if you don't have a big strong modern army. Its considered a necessity to be a world player.

Even Japan, who's constitution expressly forbids war, has a huge modern army and navy.

yeah but we're a contry of 20million, you're more than 10 times our size.

More populated than you, muhammad

because no one is ever gonna invade us and vice versa

Our military exists solely to keep high-ranking military families wealthy and powerful. Brazilian military doesn't have structure or command to fight wars or conflicts, making it larger would just be a waste of money.

Reality speaking, it's because Brazil nowadays is a mediocre social-democracy and most politicians are beta leftists or just populists

Frankly, there is no need to destabilize the region. My only wish is for cisplatinians to come home already.
We are modernizing ourselves tho. We are producing our own nuclear submarines and we also bought the Gripen technology to produce our own fighters here in Shitzil. We also bought the HMS Ocean from the British, as well as producing our own rifle for the military (Imbel IA2, but it is still evolving tho).
We still need to improve and I hope we will, but we are not shit in comparisson to our neighbours.

Social democracy is literally the worst that can happen to any country.

All politicians sitting on the fence, cowards at the time of extreme takeovers, they are only patriots when it is convenient and many other bad things and they don't follow any ideology at all. They behave exactly like chickens

You described perfectly Brazil after 1985

Brazil is not at war therefore they don't have that much active personnel since that would eat their budget , there are lots of weapons factories ready to start production if needed too.

At most they need their army for colombian drug planes and people that like to invade the amazon

>tfw we sold them our 40 year-old aircraft carrier in 2000 and they used it for 17 years before retiring it

>We are producing our own nuclear submarines

Modified French Barracuda-class that will probably never be finished considering the Brazilian economy is permanently in slow growth now.

>we also bought the Gripen technology to produce our own fighters here in Shitzil.

It's Swedish design regardless and engines are American regardless.

>Imbel IA2

Literally a FN FAL.

As you can see OP, Brazil is a just a circus nation that lives off propaganda and Brazilians eat the propaganda like it's ice cream.

It was never used actually. They just filmed some take offs on it and then it caught on fire and stayed under repair for a decade before they scraped it.

I once saw a speech of Carlos Menem from the 90's talking about Argentina's space program, so I guess you are not that different from Argentina.

Did you guys feel ripped off?

Brazil is very tight on budget and our army is already a strain on our pension system.

Telling people that we're cutting on education or health care to empower the army who's not only filled with privileges, but also once made our lives hell isn't something that any decent politician wants to do.

BUT... we HAD a nuclear program, which was way more important. But the leading man got jailed over """corruption""" (a short time after we had a regime change - coincidence?), I don't know what will happen to it now.

Honestly I doubt that the US will ever let its backyard gain the knowledge to develop nukes.

>never be finished considering the Brazilian economy is permanently in slow growth now.

So what? We bought the technology. We can produce here if needed.
> Literally a FN FAL.
FAL is a good rifle.

Look, mate, I'm not saying we are good. We are not, but we are not a completly trash either.

That's more than enough, why can't you gun obsessed freaks realize that nobody wants war and this dick size contest is just dumb shit. You're never going to use those fighters or the submarine.

In fact what morons like you don't realize is that if Brazil makes more weapons it will only end up """""""stolen"""""""" by MC Favela and his pals because you're a joke country and favelados have been found with military weapons like a thousand times already

We do, even if we had no other choice at that time.

Russia actually has nearly 150M people

>nuclear sub only laid in 2029

So more than decade away, lol.

I remember the defense minister talking this back in 2005 and saying Brazil would have the nuclear sub by 2020 at max. Shows how the Brazilian expectation is unrealistic.

> Telling people that we're cutting on education or health care to empower the army (...) isn't something that any decent politician wants to do
It will be fine, our politicians have done it many times. USA could probably also share some positive experiences.

Oh, you said 'decent', nevermind then

I said we are evolving, not that we are good, mate.

Brazilian crime groups like American weapons like AR-15 from Bushmaster or Daniel Defense, also Glocks, Brazilian guns are only for low-tier criminals and cannon fodder, so it makes no difference really.

>Meanwhile Russia which has less than half their population and GDP has a much larger and more advanced armed forces
It's a Soviet legacy (nuclear program, fleet, tanks, everything) and we also spend much more than Brazil.

But we have plenty of enemies. Lot of people hate Russia

Fun fact, Brazilian economy in 1980 was bigger than UK and China and you were in a dictatorship. What happened?

The Dictactorship ended.

Social democracy and mediocre leftists happened

Also, please don't compare our communists to your communists. They are completely different. Your communists at least care about conservatism, education and army.

The "dictatorship" was the good guy.

People that pushed democracy are the actual Social Democrats and Commies.

Their communists were more brutal though.

this is the only right answear.

The happiness of dead people is worthless to the living, user. It may be true that they were more brutal, but at least their brutality gave birth to a culture that remains imprinted in the world to this day. It's okay for people to die as long as those deaths mean something.

The army here is useless, i think we should just take all the money that goes to the army and give to the police cause they can't even be in the borders to stop drug smuglling, it's the federal police who keeps the borders, no one is going to attack us the north is useless rainforest, we get along well with the south neighbors and getting invaded by sea it's impossible

Do you unironically believe this?

American man keeps the brazilian man down.

le typical commie everything is American fault!

Americans are commies.

I half-ironically believe it, yes.

Their army still produce lot of fap material in instagram desu

faggot

>Russia
>conservative

Russian army is famous for amateur gay porn and I watch it sometimes

Debt came back to bite us, naturally.
Also, during the dictatorship, we saw the largest economic rift in our history. According to them, the "cake had to grow before it could be divided" - except it was never divided. Obviously, with workers having less and less money, the state earned less and less through tax.

And after the dictatorship ended, we elected free market liberals that "opened the markets", breaking our national industry.

Our debt exploded, we had to suck FMI's cock, stopped investing (because muh capitalism) and the country went to shit.

Please ignore the other retards replying to you. If you ever wonder why we aren't a good country, look at political illiterates such as them.

Neoliberalism happened

I can understand that guys' anger but what a fucking cuckold.

If your leftists were so superior to your dictatorship, why are you so irrelevant now compared to 1980? You are ruled by leftists since 12 years with Lula

aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2017/07/neoliberalism-latin-america-170711085354385.html

>In the 2000s, after the fiasco of 'Washington Consensus', Brazil began to supply Latin America - and why not say the rest of the developing world - a model of public administration that was worth emulating, for it combined conservatism in economic policies with a robust social agenda.

Pictured: our GDP growth during the leftist government.

Notice the big dump after 2014 - when Dilma was elected again. After that, the rightist parties prepared to apply a coup, by boycotting Dilma's government. She wasn't without blame - she commited the same mistake as a previous (more progressist) president by trying to make peace with the right.

On a side note, Putin warned Dilma that the 2013 protests were being funded by a foreign nation and that she would get ousted.

Nowadays, we have better information:

pravdareport.com/world/americas/15-07-2017/138173-atlanta_plan-0/

As a side note: brazilians (and all south americans) need to understand that we're fucking rich in resources and that we don't live in a bubble - using those resources to make ourselves rich isn't interesting for literally any developed nation.

In our nations, the rightist (under the pretense of free market) are literally feeding the rest of the world at our expense.

This isn't ideology, it's just the facts.

Since you're from Chile, you should remember about this: bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-15/chile-weighs-impact-of-alleged-manipulation-of-world-bank-report

All because a leftist was getting popular.

We weren't growing. Real was just on pair with dollar and we were just exporting commodities to China

>Real was just on pair with dollar
When Fernando Henrique left office, each USD costed 4 BRL.

The closest that the BRL got to the USD was during the financial crisis in 2008, which state-owned Banco do Brasil saved us from going down together with the US.

By the way, privatizing Banco do Brasil is one of the ambitions that the rightists have, leaving us vulnerable to any future crisis that might follow.

The whole China copout is pretty damn cheap. The whole south america was exporting to China yet none grew as much as Brazil.

Lula is just a dicksucker from bankers. High taxes, and lot of public monkey to bankers just like average leftists
