I am not a christian. I use the biological definition of human to classify humans. you can read that definition in any biology book or encyclopedia and the definition doesn't involve soul.

It's the belief in something beyond death or the remnant of such a belief that makes people go through a procedure of dressing the deceased in sunday clothes, lining the coffing with pillows etc. Without all that you could probably save the 10.000 Euros that a funeral costs these days and be done paying 50.

I'm not sure though that atheists are completely free of bits and pieces of supernatural beliefs, even if they don't follow a religion. It's human nature to think about these things, it naturally follows having a perception of one-self.

The real question is: since death is God's plan and the dead go to Heaven or Hell according to God's judgment, why do Believers[tm] get sad when someone dies? Isn't it sinful to be sad at God's plan? Of course, you're right. Just about everybody implicitly accepts mind/body dualism... which is a hold over from the idea of a spirit. It's implicit in our language and our way of thinking about things... but at the same time we can explicitly acknowledge that these hold overs are just artifacts of convenience.

I'm an atheist, my family and all of my friends are atheists. We don't go to funerals. We get drunk and talk about the deceased for a day. It's sort of like the last party they had.
The same reason they have laws and claim to have "morality". They just piggy back on the cultural institutions created by religious society and pretend they have a rational reason to do so. They also like to pretend a truly atheist society would have developed it on their own. Which is funny because they think a society could be atheist and even exist for more than a few generations.
i only do it because its polite. most of my family is christian, and they were probably going to give me a funeral wether i like it or not. i only attend them because it would reflect badly on me if i didnt show up without good reason. its not about belief, its about social standing in this case.
