You watching it on ABC Family too? First time I've seen it.

Way too much sex appeal for a Disney film

I agree, it's my favourite animated Disney film. Didn't it release around the time people were getting tired of traditional animation though?

it's decent for a kid's movie and James Woods is top notch, but if you think it is a masterpiece you need to take off the nostalgia glasses.

Because if it was based off Greek myth it should have been called Heracles. WTF Disney?!

Too 90s

Watch it last week. It's absolutely fantastic.

I'll say Herc himself is a bit bare bones as a protagonist, but the soundtrack, aesthetic and supporting cast all make it worth watching.

Don't u worry, they're going to make a live action of it within 2 years

When i was a kid i saw this movie everyday for days. I fucking fell in love with the girl.

yeah, I was.
>First time I've seen it
How old are you?

desu one of my favorites. One of the earliest movies I can remember seeing in theaters

Shoot, I think you have a point. Bodies and sass abound.
That's a very Greek thing, too.

>too much sex appeal
That bitch Ariel was naked.

People were getting tired of 2D animation in 1997?

The Disney renaissance was starting to slow down at that point

I don't know, but I remember the 3D modeling on the Hydra was a big deal at the time.

What even was James Woods before Hades?
Robin Williams was in every manner of family film before and after Genie.
Devito is everywhere as well, famous for playing loads of quirky personalities.
Norm was in a couple of cartoons and gets paraded around Sup Forums as being the "greatest ever" by intellectual wannabes.

What's the James Woods secret?

It is a masterpiece.
Backgrounds.
Character design.
Appropriate pacing.
Voice acting.
Not one bad song on the soundtrack.

The seamless combination of contrasting elements: Greek myth and design, 40s archetypes, 90s culture, and black gospel music.
It shouldn't work but it works really well.

True, but her bellybutton was only one minor element of the movie. The Little Mermaid still had classic fairy-tale romance and Ariel was at best "precocious".

Hercules on the other hand, had the 'tude woven into it. Hips bouncing everywhere, and very grown-up relationships.
Dare I say,
It was like Seinfeld for kids.

NO
NO
NO
NO
NO

I know this feeling, you poor child.

>It was like Seinfeld for kids.

i'm just a widdle girl. maybe some big strong boy can watch movies with me

At the time it was pretty big in terms of merchandise and popularity. Hell it even got that spin off show about his youth.

As for why it's faded out with time, I personally blame Tarzan for replacing it in terms of everything

...

Nobody talks about Tarzan, that movie is a masterpiece too.

26, but it just slipped through the cracks I guess. Apparently I'm not alone in not seeing it when it came out considering it didn't do well at the box office.

I didn't see it when it came out but I wasn't born yet

I always liked the mythological and heroic elements of the film, but all that stuff about superhero commercialism in the middle of it always struck me as dumb. Still, the hero and the characters around him are good, especially Hades, and Meg is hot as fuck. I Won't Say I'm In Love is fantastic, Go The Distance never fails to inspire me, and the ending is very emotional and rewarding. I love it when Hercules punches Hades into the river of death at the end. Very cathartic.

Overall, it's very good, but a bit cluttered. I wish they had just done a straight hero story and dropped all that Las Vegas bullshit. 7/10.

>but all that stuff about superhero commercialism in the middle of it always struck me as dumb
>Las Vegas bullshit.

It was supposed to be like Michael Jordan and 90s basketball culture and served to reinforce Phil's point about how being a true hero is driven by heart.

Well, that just proves my point. That part has aged horribly, and it never meshed with the rest of the movie in the first place. As a kid, I liked the monsters, the mythology and the music, and today I like all the same stuff, plus Meg's hips. The Las Vegas crap can go.

...

This is by far the best disney film, imo. Doesn't get enough credit

Also, Danny Devito is fucking great

such a great movie. Always was one of my favorites.

Soon there probably will be a movie remake and Hercules will be black.

Well, Greeks are black.

Megara is LITERALLY my childhood crush. She was so fucking hot in this.

DAS RITE

It went for a lighter tone compared to the more epic, serious films like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.

This user gets it, plus it may seem superficial about the history stuff, but they really did their research.

As long as they keep Danny devotion, we're good

*devito

I enjoyed muscular men and was kind of disappointed outside of a couple scenes that Herc was drawn with just very simple lines and wasn't as fappable as he could have been.

just returned from disney world with my family. theres nothing involving this film at all in any park. the biggest contribution is the theme song that they use for the fireworks show now. i did manage to get 2 pretty high quality pins tho. 10/10 movie

It feels more epic than both of those movies though.

Literally the best use of gospel music in any film. It doesn't make any sense with the setting but it just works.

Tarzan is gay

...

>this isn't seen as a Disney classic even though it is top tier

>theres nothing involving this film at all in any park.
Disney's racism strikes again.

Watching this now, it's great but imo doesn't get recognition because of the Greek mythos behind it. There are a lot of representations of Greek mythology.

Why is this STILL the best Disney song?
youtube.com/watch?v=FqDaoMtIujs

youtube.com/watch?v=buQobFomAks
Why is Danish Hades so much better?

Because the protagonist is a male with red hair who isn't a retard or bully. Its literally the only reason.

>that part in the movie where hera makes hercules go insane and kill meg

jesus how did disney get away with that part

But everyone loves Conan O'Brien.

I went back within the last year and was reading up on it and was genuinely surprised to find out it got a bit of a critical lashing and wasn't actually that well received. I always thought Hercules was fucking great. Stellar music. One of the best artstyles in Disney animation (Coming at a time when Disney had started to falter and lose their mastery of hand drawn animation). Genuinely funny and creative with the way it juxtaposed modern day themes within an ancient Greek story and setting. Stellar performances (Meg is one of the best female Disney characters by far and Hades is still remembered as one of the best Disney villains. That's not even getting to Phil, Pain and Panic who by all rights are archetypes that should detract from a film but really work in this case).

I dunno I just really dig Hercules man.

WE

it's about gods, libs don't like it for that reason

This is short and simple but still gets me and is one of my favorites of all time.

Best Superman movie

It's an okay movie. Monsters Inc is way better

and people say Hunchback is dark.

probably wrong place to ask, but it is at least slightly relevant, When did casting "name" actors for voices in Disney movies become the thing to do? Was it because of Robin Williams in Aladdin? It use to be you'd have maybe 1 recognizable star but the rest of the cast would be 2-bit, minor actors but it seems as time as gone on more and more voices have to name actors or actresses.

>One of the best artstyles in Disney animation
Stylistically it's the only Disney film to diffentriate from Disney's boring house style.

Monsters Inc is Pixar and not really related in any way.

this. Trumpules has toxic whiteness and problematicness up the butt
this too. that recent doggo movie about reincarnation had poor reviews. God, souls, afterlife, feelings, emotions? that's a paddlin'

>Was it because of Robin Williams in Aladdin?
It definitely started the trend.

Then they had JEJ and Jeremy Irons in Lion King, Mel Gibson in Pocahontas, Demi Moore in Hunchback, Eddie Murphy in Mulan.

my favorite disney film

also first ever film I've seen in a theatre (that's the reason)

James Woods was videodrome's not first victim.

never seen it. does he kill his wife and kids? thats kinda part of his back story

yeah it seems to me Robin in Aladdin caused them to shift from "broadway stars" to actual "movie stars"

Do you make a career out of talking through your ass? Just look at Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmations for example. Disney generally used wildly different styles because each move was inspired by specific art styles. There was a dark period where a lot of shit was getting reused but early Disney and Renaissance Disney were top notch.

>greek
>black sassy gospel singers set the tone

Greeks and Italians are black.

they're sandpeople

I agree, Herc is my favorite 90s Disney flick. I can appreciate the others like Aladdin and Hunchback, but Herc is just my personal fave and most enjoyable. I've never understood why the art style and music get bagged, both of these things are what make it my favorite. Not to mention the fucking voice cast.

My parents still have the plates from McDonalds.

It's the Patrician choice, all my nerdy friends liked Aladdin the most

Real talk the patrician choice is something like Bambi or Pinnochio. Those films are fucking art especially if you look into behind the scenes footage.

youtube.com/watch?v=YdHTlUGN1zw

Look at that fucking contraption they used for Bambi.

It was clearly a very loose adaptation. Zeus was basically God and Hades was basically the Devil. All the other gods were for all intents and purposes angels. Poseidon isn't even in it.

this was white people's destiny. we all could have been walt disneys. fucking kikes ruining everything

Ruined it for me. Also Meg's english voice a shit. Seriously what the fuck.

Jesus Christ.

It's supposed to be like they're pottery figures.

I'd be ok with this as long as they cast Marilyn Manson as Hades

WE

sell them to me on ebay

>Greek mythology movie
>Hades is the bad guy
I hate this "Hades is evil" meme

I loved Aladdin as a kid. Robin Williams as Genie is what got me interested in acting.
But after rewatching it, the movie is pretty lackluster and it's unfortunate that Ashman's ideas got thrown out with his death, especially since he pitched it.
Genie was gonna be like Cab Calloway animations and the film, like Hercules, was gonna be inspired by 40s and 30s movies.
The main theme of the movie was gonna be making your parents proud or something like that, Jasmine and Aladdin both had issues with their parents.
And Jasmine was gonna be kind of dumb and bitchy, she originally loved being a princess and everything that came with it.

you're just years late

Who the fuck still cares about Disney movies except women

Hades is the best disney villain

> back in the days when the german dub was superior to the english original

what went wrong...

Because he is funny and they look at him like a retard.

I love it. The only Disney shit I like is their animated movies.

>her bellybutton was only one minor element of the movie.

When the witch changes her to a human, she's fucking naked until she swims to land and wraps herself in rope and sail.

It's pretty much the 70's Superman movie with Gospel and a Hercules skin

The Iron Giant is the best Superman movie

What are more modern 2D movies as good as 90's disney stuff?

Seriously asking because everything I seen now is 3D and often not even good.
