Black Panther Storytime

Welcome back Anons! Since nobody voted either way, I decided. We're only doing three issues of Priest's Black Panther. These are very important for our stories, though, so let's get started.

How fucked up is it that Colleen's first appearance in a while isn't with Iron Fist, but in fucking BLACK PANTHER?!

i need to sit and read this whole run

Hey, I ASKED if people wanted me to do the entire series, but nobody said anything.

By the way, does anyone else remember Nightshade here? Early Luke Cage villain?

Uh oh...

Colleen's still fucking bloodthirsty as fuck.

>Colleen kept the ashes of a head she cut off

That's some weird fucking hobby, Colleen.

So yeah, Nightshade managed to use comic superscience to bring Chiantang back to life. You remember him right? Shapeshifter, sorcerer, dragon, REALLY fucking hates Iron Fist and Luke?

...

>he takes the time to talk to the random drunk

Take the time to read that first panel, because I haven't read this run in a while.

Everett Ross here is the viewpoint character of the series. He's a hapless government agent who's assigned to be T'Challa's escort and bodyguard by the US Government. For obvious reasons, he ends up out of his fucking depth countless times.

...

>"This is NOT Mephisto, though the illusion is masteful, the work of powerful magic. The source of which continues to elude even me."
>"I suspect the source is the same as K'un Lun."

Dun dun dun!

oh i don't have the time. just another great comic to get to one day.

The entire run is collected in Paperbacks now, so it's easier than ever to find them.

I like to imagine Priest tried to get him to say "Bitches leave" like in Robocop, but editorial told him no.

yeah i'm real happy about that. and finally putting mcgregors out too

see movies have good effects

A few important things to know about Priest's T'Challa. He always knows more than you think he does (it helps that Ross is our viewpoint character so we're never actually in T'Challa's head). And he's a ruthless fucker.

IM NOT A FAGGOT DAD

>see movies have good effects
Syngergy is a double-edged sword. It can give us reprints of good runs, or it can ruin current comics by trying to appeal to the movie goers.
And occasionally, they can make a character better by going with the new version of the character (Mr. Freeze)

If you'll remember the last storytime, while Iron Fist and Wolverine managed to stop Junzo Muto's plans to bring K'un Lun to Japan, they never actually reversed the ritual, so he still has the Iron Fist power.

Priest loves continuity

He used Dakota North of all people in this run

I like to imagine that Colleen here is just shouting obscenities so foul that even the MAX line wouldn't print them.

>his costume is turning red

It helps that he's actually written these characters before. Remember, Christopher Priest's was credited as Jim Owlsey back when he wrote the last run on Power Man and Iron Fist in the 80's.

>red costume
>glowing eyes

Well fuck, this isn't good.

>We're only doing three issues of Priest's Black Panther.

That's fair. It's good stuff, but we're about to hit the unvarnished shit at this point, and it would be cruel to got from a lot of good into the Bendis Zone.

I've always loved this red costume gimmick
Feels very anime-ish

>'Nuff Said

Okay, so I explained this once months ago when I did my Genis-Vell storytimes, but I suspect some of you weren't there for those. This was an experiment run around the same time to see if Marvel writers could do an entire issue without a single word of dialogue.

The most famous one of these is the issue of Kang Dynasty, when Kang the Conquerer manages to finally take over the world through sheer military might, and manages to get a unanimous declaration of surrender signed, I think by The Wasp.

And before you make the predictable jokes, Bendis actually DID do an issue during this, in his Daredevil run. Issue #28.

This is the silent issue right?

X-Force #123 was the best of the bunch.

Okay, this girl. I forget her name, but she was a girl that T'Challa found in a ghetto with her grandmother, who he ended up taking as one of his Dora Milaje. It was later revealed that she was a decendent of the White Gorilla tribe, who were wiped out almost entirely, including her parents in the middle panel. She watched as M'Baku and T'Challa fought in front of her as well, so yeah, she's got to "figure things out".

Yes, notes are probably cheating, whatever.

All of the 'Nuff Said issues are silent.
Like I said, EVEN the Bendis one.

Oh yeah, we are REALLY close to Bendis time. Luckily though, we have Marvel Knights to go through first.

>How fucked up is it that Colleen's first appearance in a while isn't with Iron Fist, but in fucking BLACK PANTHER?!

Well, Jim Owlsley did close out Heroes for Hire.

I haven't read that one sadly.

Oh no! She's being attacked by Slutty Minnie Mouse!

It's basically been used (mostly by Priest) to represent "Evil Danny".

>not reading Milligan, Allred, Cooke, Pope's et al X-Force/X-Statix
For shame.

She was there for the Machine Man crossover, so they should.

You'll notice I've been taking the time to mention in most of this series the limitations of the Iron Fist power. Mostly that Danny can use it sparingly, once a day to make a couple of times.
This is probably the first time he's been able to do an entire fight with the Iron Fist power.

Queen divine justice

Most of my reading is preparation for future storytimes I have planned. I'm currently in the middle of Delano's Animal Man.

I may have repressed that memory, due to how absurdly stupid that name is.

So yeah, this bit is important.

>evil Danny tries to run T'Challa over with a fucking taxi

In sheer silliness, I think this almost beats the time TAS Venom drove a truck to catch Spider-Man.

And he's fucking committed to this nonsense.

Some people probably we're there for it. It sucks, but I've got long hours so my storytimes rarely get a crowd.

>"Can I find the little boy's room?"
>"Oh no buddy. Look at the size of you, your turds would clog the pipes!"
>"Look, either I do it in the toilet, or I do it here, take your pick."
>"Just... just go outside and do it."

Remember, whenever you complain about modern Marvel, it could always be worse. I could be writing.

...

And suddenly, random oil drum.

...

OUCH!

Still better than Bendis

Remember this if you ever see a vs. battle between Iron Fist and Black Panther.

And since this particular scan doesn't have a script, I can't actually explain what just happened here.

>Priest loves continuity

I think all Editors turned Writers do.
At least the old school ones, where Editors were continuity wranglers and not the weird corporate middle managers they are now.

Or here, really.

Okay, so it looks like he used his own earpiece to break Danny's brainwashing? No idea how he managed that.

He looks in a good mood.

Remember what

The fight never actually finished

Call it heresy, but I think an entire page of shit jokes is worse than Bendisspeak.
Of course, I haven't actually read any Bendis since AvS, so maybe he's gotten even worse.

So yeah, after M'Baku's shit earlier, Wakanda basically went into a civil war.

>This was an experiment run around the same time to see if Marvel writers could do an entire issue without a single word of dialogue.

An experiment inspired by Priest's friend and mentor Larry Hama who did a number of silent issues in GI Joe.

Believe it or not, this page? Not my fault this time.

Seriously, I need more Everett Ross in my comics. Dude's fucking great.

Okay, so this genetic bomb stuff is new and important.

Really? Huh, I didn't actually know where they got the idea from, that's pretty neat.

So yeah, a massive fucking dragon rampaged through Japan (I think we're in Japan? That's where Chiantang found Danny, at least) once. Funny how that never comes up, huh?

Okay, so that other Black Panther. Basically M'Baku had him frozen in ice, and T'Challa has kept him under like this since he fought him earlier in the run. I'll explain how he goes later on. In spoilers, of course.

>"Options, Iron Fist."
>"(a) Run, (b) Run Faster."

Yeah, Danny isn't exactly a "planner".

Okay, so they aren't in Japan, they're in fucking Brooklyn.

So there really is no excuse for nobody to ever mention the time a fucking dragon just rampaged through the city. I'm just saying, if people hated superhumans because they caused shit like this? It'd be believable.

>"Panther, I've made a career out of following a guy who goes about things the wrong way."

Wow Danny, way to drop Luke under the bus.

I do enjoy a bit how, despite his plan being ruined by T'Challa, Chiantang is still focusing all of his rage through the lens of Danny.

Well, he WAS.

Why is this scanshit?

Oh, you bitch.

Because I already bought the trades for the lion's share of these stories and I don't feel like buying them digitally again?

So yeah, Wakanda going nuts over everything their king fucks up isn't exactly new.

...

>"How did Panther SURVIE a BARRAGE of THOSE?!"

No, is this stuff not ripped digitally yet I meant. That's odd.

Oh, that? Well, I went with the first torrent I could find. I don't know enough to be able to tell the differences at a glance, particularly with these newer titles. At least with Bronze age or older, I can tell.

Aren't you a fucking Sorcerer too? Christ, I remember you fucking slaughtering Luke and Colleen one-on-one.

...

Are their bodys supposed to be dipped in iodine??

Yeah, the most famous one was GI Joe #21, but he did a few more, including one of my favourites, a sound effect only issue where Zartan goes after Storm Shadow and Jinx.

>"Your one and true king has returned!"

Okay, since we won't read through the rest of this run, I'll explain what the deal with him is.

This guy is exactly who he says he is. Turns out he's T'Challa from the future. Current T'Challa put him in suspended animation because he's dying of a fatal brain aneurysm. Apparently knowing that he's dying is what's causing him to act so hammy like this. I think he went back in time to try and prevent the aneurysm, only to die anyway. It's implied, and may be outright stated that he got the aneurysm when he fought Iron Fist and tanked all those Iron Fist blows, and I even recall it being said that our T'Challa has the same aneurysm now.

Of course, Hudlin didn't read this run at all, so he basically retconned that entire paragraph right there to not matter.

Okay Anons, next on the docket is Chuck Dixon's "Marvel Knights" series, a fifteen issue series. Luke Cage ends up joining the group for the last five issues.

Once again, I pose the same question as last time. Should we read the entire series, or just the part where Luke joins?

Well, Dixon used to be pretty consistently readable, and 15 issues isn't nearly the commitment of Priest'challa, so maybe start on the first issue and skip ahead if it's boring?
