Why was early Family Guy so great, yet the first couple seasons of American Dad fucking unbearable?

Why was early Family Guy so great, yet the first couple seasons of American Dad fucking unbearable?

Pilot Steve is probably the most insufferable cunt in television history.

It was a "BUCK FUSH" cash in that accidentally became good.

Am I the only one that liked early AD? The humor is vastly different than later seasons, but still good.

It wasn't bad, but everyone was pretty one note. It definitely got better over time. I might be in the minority, but I think it's still getting better. Unlike FG, AD's writers know how to push the envelope without being edgelords.

It's definitely still watchable, but AD feels like it's trying to be whacky and in on its own jokes.

That's fair. It clearly IS trying to be whacky.

[spoilers]But is it so bad if it's actually succeeding?[/spoiler]

Just ctrl-S next time

I'm a big ol' tard, huh?

I don't understand why Steve was such a stuck-up cunt in the pilot. What the fuck were they going for?

DUDE REPUBLICANS LMAO can only carry a show for so long

Tell that to Colbert and Stewart

They wanted him to be different from Chris from early Family Guy. If he was just the nerdy kid that couldn't get girls and wanted his dad's approval, he would have been a carbon copy of Chris, just nerdy instead of fat. Making him bratty was their answer.

>Unlike FG, AD's writers know how to push the envelope without being edgelords.

It seems like the liberal hack edgelords switched shows. AD actually got better as it evolved from a flat sattire of conservatives/republicans while FG became less about comedy and more about delivering a political agenda laced with filth.

The primary difference between the two is that the characters in FG are retarded. (Yes, all of them.)
The characters in AD are psychopaths.

But the AD writers give a shit, and the characters, despite being as prone to violence and abuse of each other, also can believably be shown to care about each other, despite being assholes to each other often.

I actually appreciated the experimental nature of the first TBS season, even if a lot of the material didn't land ("American Fung" comes to mind). At least they thought outside the box and tried new things. Newest season was a return to form though, from the 3-4 episodes I've seen though.

There is a reason why The Daily Show is down to being a third rate political humor show these days.

The weirdest thing is that both shows have recurring incestuous themes but AD manages to make them a funny recurring joke.

>whacky

Why are you saying it like that?

Seth MacFarlane has such a great voice, but is such an astonishingly bad actor. His delivery is the exact same for every line. He's the primary reason I have trouble watching AD despite how good it got. I just cannot stand hearing him talk in that same exact way for every character he does.

I don't know, season 1-3 Peter had a subtle range of emotions.

>the first couple seasons of American Dad fucking unbearable?
I thought it was fine. You're probably just a Republican.

George Bush ruined comedy

Like what?

It wasn't even anything offensive to republicans, that type of stuff is already done to death.

Yeah I'd rewatch the early seasons of AD a lot and honestly the only differences I can note are Klaus and Roger, everyone else is pretty much the same character. The later seasons were better but I don't think there are any early episodes that are straight up BAD.

Not as bad as season 1 King of the Hill

That shit is straight up unwatchable

In Country.... Club is best episode.

Not really related to the thread. Just giving you guys a heads up.

Definitely a top 5 episode but I like Lincoln Lover the best.

didn't you already make this thread faggot?

i understand season 1 being lousy, but what's wrong with 2? that's when the show gets good

Well I don't know if you could blame him, but yeah left wing twats who came of age during his presidency have certainly killed it.
>that Obama Futurama episode
Jesus Christ...

Posting the real star of the show.

This image is deviantart teir levels of autism

Do people here generally like current American Dad?

Every since the TBS move I haven't been keeping up with it. The episodes I have seen have been alright. Nothing noteworthy.

and trump made it worse

pilot Steve is an insufferable cunt because Scott Grimes is an irl cunt

elaborate

>the first couple seasons of American Dad fucking unbearable?

No way. The show definitely got better later on, but even from the start it was pretty solid.

>Am I the only one that liked early AD? The humor is vastly different than later seasons, but still good.

Of course not. The earlier seasons are immensely enjoyable. I wouldn't even say the humor is that different from later years. It's a bit more grounded, but tonally it's almost no different. Sure there are some weird quirks (like Roger not leaving the house for the first few episodes) but the show finds its way pretty quickly.

Sure, it was more political, but even by the end of the first season the political satire had been getting toned down. By the end of the second season it was almost gone completely, minus the fact that Stan is a conservative, and Hayley is a liberal, which has been kept through the entire run.

Plus, season 1 gave us the scene of Roger hooked up to a milking machine. I don't know how anyone can call it bad.

Why is that a good thing and what episode is called

Dunno, I liked it from the start, was watching it in no real order for 4-5 seasons and I don't even know how many seasons it has at this point and if they are good.

But what I've seen I enjoyed throughout and it increasingly was getting better and better.

George Bush was a gold mine so everyone made fun of him. If Trump wins then be prepared for alot more political cartoons.

"Deacon Stan, Jesus Man", the 7th episode of season 1.

It's one of those few episodes that focuses heavily on Roger's weird alien biology.

Early AD wasn't that bad. Definitely caught its stride later on, but it was still watchable.

What I want to know is how anyone on the Family Guy team could possibly look at what Family Guy become not not wonder what the fuck there were doing and not resign out of embarrassment.

They were caricatures during the earlier seasons.
Stan=right wing nutjob
Haley= hippie
Steve= Nerd
Francine= Housewife
Roger= .....he was kinda just there the first two seasons

When the writers started giving them personality is when the show got better. Its funny that FG did the complete opposite with their cast

>Steve= Nerd

Steve's character was a bit more nauseously complex than that. He was like a stuck-up, overconfident nerd who thought he was cooler than he actually was. Like, different than those nerd characters who laugh at normies for being dumb jocks.

I knew if I used king deedeedee you would respond..

You play brawl and like weird Nintendo porn

I'm psychic

I wonder why they dropped Klaus being obsessed with Francine. It would be nice to give Francine a friend after they dropped her lesbian friend from the show.

Prime AD is better then FG? Francine alone is funnier than latter family guy episodes. Plus she's hot as fuck, that damn milf voice she has makes my dick diamonds

They seemed to drop Klaus altogether. He only shows up occasionally for some stupid punchingbag gag.

He was much better as the occasional straightman to Stan.

AUUUUDOOOOOREEEEYY!!!!

The first TBS season was hit or miss but I liked the second season.

Maybe it's because I've seen them a billion times, but I think early Family Guy was really bland and not that great.

Better than post cancellation, but still not something I'd actively seek out watching. Characters like Pre-cancellation Meg or Chris, for example, were nothing more than unfunny slabs of cardboard.

the more i watch reruns of early American Dad i like them less and less
but more i watch reruns of early Family Guy i like them more and more

>the car keys are in my pocket you stupid biiiiiiiiiiitch

Yeah, Stewart's gone and we're stuck with Mr Dude I'm Black Did You Know.

For a second you had me scared that Patrick Stewart left the show

>Roger= .....he was kinda just there the first two seasons
honestly I kind of miss that, they've massively overused Roger by this point, and you can tell that an episode in the last couple of seasons is likely to be weak if it has Roger have any real focus at all, cause they tend to use his wackiness to shore up weak plots and to stretch them out through his often repetitive shenanigans

I like when Roger is just some random character doing his own thing. It's annoying when his character has a major effect on the plot.

exactly what I'm talking about, best bit in a long time he's had was in the Roller Derby episode with him trying to deal with the skating rink's rat problem

The early seasons were okay.

Seasons 3-7 are great!

Seasons 8-11 some episodes are great, but some are pretty bad.

Season 12 was garbage.

Season 13 was decent.

Best episode ever is the hot tub episode you cannot prove this fact wrong.

>Well, there you have it, that's our story, Stan's dead. Good night.

That shit was hilarious and besides that it has some of the best tracks of the series. American dad needs more Marguerite.
