Or maybe it's because the design is actually repulsive (or rather, was particularly repulsive in its debut episode). It's possible to make an ugly character that doesn't look like shit (Sugilite). Just because they failed to do that here doesn't mean it's waifufags.

Just got into this series a little over a week ago. I'm still catching up a bit, and I'm sure this was discussed to death when the relevant episodes were airing, but...
Was anyone else disappointed about Garnet being a fusion?
Before, I liked her because she was just kind of more competent than the others without much explanation. She was cool and mysterious. Now, her nature has a very straightforward explanation. She's a fusion so obviously she's just straight up stronger, pretty simple. It might just be me not paying attention before, but it also seems like she's regarded as way stronger now. Whereas before it didn't seem like there was such a huge difference between her and Amy/Pearl, which somehow makes her a bit less interesting because, again, I know it's just because she's a fusion.
That said, I think it was generally handled well. do enjoy the scenes with Ruby/Sapphire. And I'm also impressed with how the reveal was foreshadowed in earlier eps.

I don't know why I don't like it, honestly. I don't know enough about character design to give a full analysis. All I know is that the design makes me uncomfortable. Also that the eyes remind me of the fry mascot when it came to life.
So my new question to anyone who knows anything about designing characters is this: Why does Smokey's design come across so poorly when other fusions that share similar traits are received more openly?
