I hate morons that say this.
In the book, that may be true. I've heard its a lot more ambiguous.
In the Movie, while its ultimately up to the viewer to decide, one of the major, MAJOR themes is how impersonal everything is. No one knows who the fuck anyone else is. No one cares about wjo anyone else is. In the opening scene, Bateman himself confuses someone else for Paul Allen. The nude prostitute running around screaming? Ignored because no one wants the trouble or cares. The bodies being gone at the end? The estate agent gives him a knowing look and tells him to leave; they don't want the property value to drop and its suggested they may have just cleaned up themselves.
Even at the end, Bateman's own lawyer doesn't recognise him. Paul Allen never even recognised Bateman. The lawyer insists he had dinner with Paul Allen, but Bateman comes to a realisation at the end of him insisting he hadn't; it could very well be interpreted that the lawyer knew he hadn't had dinner with Paul Allen, but just didn't want to deal with the trouble.
Quite honestly its a brilliant movie and the ONLY good movie I can think of by a demale director.

Apparently with the interview scenes they did it 3 ways: one where the detective knows, one where he suspects, and one where he has no clue. They then apparently used parts from each take for the final scene.
