Does anyone on Sup Forums work in the animation industry? I'm preparing a portfolio to apply as a character animator at a small local studio. They only asked for a portfolio, so I'm not sure if I should have a demo reel ready too.
I don't have any formal education in art but I think I've got a decent shot. Any advice?

I've never seen proof of Sup Forums pople working in animation

Show it to peers and professionals. Or at websites dedicated to art critique. Let them give you feedback and improve on what they have to tell you.
Forget about showing it openly on an internet board - internet anons make the worst critics. They'll praise you if you cater to their tastes or give you hell if you don't.

I'm not asking for art critiques, I'm asking if there's anything I should expect going into an animation job interview.
I'm pretty much just doing it to make more money working on something that isn't utter misery like the call center I'm currently at. None of that desperate intern stuff. Plus there's an option to work from abroad if I do get hired, which has good appeal.
BTW I'm applying for the studio that made Golan the insatiable, they seem to mostly make commercials and stuff with a focus on making shit on time. So I don't think my portfolio should have any uber stylized stuff that shows off muh creativity as much as good foundations and dynamism that shows competence.
I'm mainly curious about stuff like how big a portfolio should be, how I should expect an interview to go as far as art gigs go, if I should bring anything else to the table.
You know, what should I really expect?
Brayden Ross
You should expect not to come to Sup Forums with these kinds of questions. It's an incredibly rare occurence that anyone isn't gonna shitpost the hell out of this or be a complete sperglord because LOLAMIRITE bullshit. Also, look up testimonials from animators that quit and you can get a good idea of what the worst to expect is.
Adrian Cooper
If you going to do character animation, don't just bring a portfolio full of shit like rendered character designs or scene paintings. A lot of amateurs do this and it just makes things harder on the person in the hiring process because usually people get hired to do one thing in the pipeline. So it's better to show that you can do the one thing they're hiring for really well instead of trying to show off how much of an artist you are.
Christian Ramirez
You're going to get overworked and underpaid.

Bruh I work at a call center doing minimum wage talking to old people thst give me a migraine.
I'll gladly do overtime making fucking cartoons for the same amount of money. Hell, from what I hear, animators get paid pretty fucking well compared to what I'm earning.
As far as I know the actual process is you get contracted to make something by such and such date instead of by the hour work. Sounds like it's a sweet deal to be left to your own devices to do your job instead of being monitored for everything you do.

Have fun slaving away at a job you hate while making less money than I do in two months. :^)

You're applying for a character animator, right?
Character sheets. Draw people. Take a figure drawing class at a local college.

What does it feel like choosing a completely impotent career track, while other people developed interests that can bring them both joy and financial stability?

It's a good thing I have both of those, while you only have one. :^)

>Any advice? Don't ask Sup Forums for advice. They'll give a million reasons why you can't and 0 why you can.
And yes, you should have a demo reel ready. If technical skill isn't holding you back, you need to have a can-do attitude and show that you'll go above and beyond.
David Miller
Why is everyone here so negative towards working in the industry? I imagine they'll appreciate a demo reel, user. Just as long as it's good.
Anthony Gonzalez
How much is that job going to pay? What are the hours? Any benefits?

/biz/ go home. You're drunk and nobody actually like you anyway.

You'd probably get better answers from /ic/ since, you know, actual artists are there and give this kind of info. Sup Forums is mostly for discussion of cartoons as a fan, not as a employee or creator. Closes to that is the webcomic thread and even then, it's just webcomics. Seriously, try asking in /ic/, most you get here is "theories" on what you should have.
