TFA isn't a great or promising movie, but Kylo is the one part of the movie's self-awareness that manages to be perceptive more than grating. He's a character that works on multiple levels with respect to TFA being a sequel, and that's why he works when so much of the film doesn't.
I'm still not optimistic for VIII, though.
