How would You Make a Modern Fantasy?

Seeing how GOT has nose-dived into the shittiest fanfiction, it made me wonder what Sup Forums would consider in making a good fantasy for today's audiences.

I've been on an 80's binge lately and saw Excalibur, Willow, Ladyhawke, and Legend; all of which I've enjoyed a lot. So it got me thinking, what can we do and NOT do to create something that invokes the best in fantasy without resorting to cliches like ripping off LOTR or being a GOT clone?

The one thing I noticed in 80's fantasy and science fantasy flicks (like Krull for instance), there's a good deal of making the characters feel like they're part of a greater world. Their journey is just one scope of a multitude of other storylines throughout the world.

I enjoy my share of political back-biting and wheeling-dealing so you can elements of that, but I also want to treat sorcery and mystical creatures in a logical manner. Like sorcery is considered something like a taboo outside of folk tricks in the countryside because the nobility and royalty realize that magic can circumvent traditional lines of power. Mythical creatures are to be either exterminated as threats or harnessed as livestock for human greed.

And don't have everyone grimdark serious, but at the same time, don't make them do quips and other retarded shit. Just let them be human beings with realistic emotions and dialogue.

GOT had one of the most down-to-Earth scenes when TV Gendry berated Arya for wasting her 3 death wishes from Jaqen. He pointed out that she could've used them to kill Cersei, Joffrey, and/or Tywin instead of wasting them fruitlessly. That's something anyone with half a brain would do.

Don't make the characters do blatantly stupid shit just to advance the plot or make another character look good. You don't rob someone else of their individuality just to strengthen another's.

Well according to Sup Forums...

>straight white males run the show
>women can never be in a position of power or do anything cool ever
>foreign invasions and conquests are only acceptable when white people do it
>brown people are treated as subhuman
>women are treated as subhuman

Did I miss anything?

Sounds realistic and lifelike, I like it

A detailed tax policy.

Sounds fucking perfect for me. But the jkikes will never allow this.

Most fantasy since LOTR focus on being epic.
Massive scale battles, epic fanfare music, badass combats, everything has to be HUGE.
Don't get me wrong, LOTR made it right, but I still think it could be nice some fantasy focused on small scale events, with almost absent music, few characters, battles that aren't epic or heroic but brutal and unfair, maybe some humour in it, and a focus on small details, like dresses or furnitures, just because.

I'd make an urban fantasy.

I want more ancient Greek/Roman fantasy instead of the endless medieval Europe

I'm fucking tired of contemporary fantasy emulating Western European concepts of the middle ages. Why not something a little more exotic like Persia or India?

If you want to still have white people, just imagine fantasy Romans or Greeks.

Because India and Persia are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things and wouldn't interest the normies one bit.

Oh I agree.

Anyone ever watch the Pirates of Dark Water cartoon? That was fun as fuck. You're on the high seas and visiting foreign locales while evading a pirate lord in the midst of an apocalypse that will envelop the world.

Why haven't we seen more naval-themed fantasy?

This, I'd love a live-action series with a similar tone to Shin Megami Tensei

Indeed. Also, that's just historical fiction. Fantasy has literary roots in the Middle Ages, if you don't like it just read something else.

No castles and knights and shit, no fantasy. Sorry, we're not chucking away thousands of years of tradition because you picked up a book about India in college.

Would watch it.

I want to inject black people onto every scene slowly enough that people don't realize they are actually watching interracial porn.

>tfw Arab history is hella interesting but no one will write about post-Mohammed Arabia because the Shias or Sunnis will kill anyone associated with it

As an aside, Do average people really not want to see stories about people that don't look like them?

I'm just throwing those cultures out there because it'd be a nice change of pace.

I don't want to see Orientals because I think they're overrated while seeing generic Merry Olde England white fantasy is overdone to death.

I'd even go for fantasy Incans, Aztecs, and Mayans just so that we can get a fresh approach.

I really like the pre-Islam Arabs. The Ghassanid vs Lakhmid rivalry would do well in a fantasy setting. Both being backed by empire superpowers (Byzantium, Persia) to be used in their proxy wars.

>No castles and knights and shit, no fantasy.
Please kill yourself.

Don't forget that political intrigue > all and the moment the plot gets advanced THE SHOW IS FUCKING RUINED REEEEEEEEEEE

>without resorting to cliches like ripping off
Why not resort to cliches?

>As an aside, Do average people really not want to see stories about people that don't look like them?

They don't. This is why black people and women don't like it when a show doesn't have black people or women; it becomes harder to empathize and care in general. So it's okay to feel the same way about a story with little to no white people.
