We're the very best at being bad

>We're the very best at being bad...

This is the last issue of Crossed.
Yes, Badlands ended already, but this is it.
Ennis's new mini hasn't been solicited anyway.
So, far in the future, the Crossed saga wraps up.

This is-
Crossed + 100 #18: The End

Oh, Spurrier.
Always having your endings be "get out while you can cause there's no good in sticking around".

It's an okay enough message but this is the 3rd or so time.

Thanks Dave!

For how shaky his run was after taking the baton up from Moore, this was an okay ending.

I find the idea of "merge" and "participate" kinda bullshit, but probably Spurrier's 2nd most hopeful ending.

And that's something I didn't expect.
The End/

And Social Justice Warriors in this one?

liked this ending.

this ending is good in this setting, they are all fucked.

Relatively fucked.

I mean, yeah a big chunk of the human survivors, particularly the fighters, got infected.
But Robbie and SaltMan have figured that total conquest infection is a dead end and won't end well.

Meanwhile "Now Taylor" is possibly the first 100% "merge" and is pretty well equipped to survive.
Sure, they're still on the verge of mutual extinction..but not so bad.

I want to like this book, but the dialogue is unfucking readable.

We used to have a glossary set up but it was lost in the archive move.

Man, fuck Bailey. Can't half-ass this shit when every mistake can lead to species extinction.

...

Got a download for all of Crossed +100? Or perhaps all the rest of Crossed?

I like how Salt and Greer's crew is presented as the best of two terrible options.

>we tried to be better. We've got so much to beat, skullwise.
I'm not supposed to have these feels for the Crossed.

I was surprised too. So Salt's plan was to just merge the groups together. That is why he was forcing the uninfected to raise the kids. To eventually get the children to be normalized into society.

Yeah, and Now proves that it can work.
The only thing holding them back was that Bashful and Sleepy were assholes

And now that the moderate faction is wiped out, you've got a 400 men army, armed to the teeth, led by an alpha-Crossed who wants to infect everyone regardless of the final outcome, who also has Bailey, who's privy to the inner workings of all nearby settlements.
Almost makes you wish Jokemercy had his way. I like this ending. Been a while since Crossed was genuinely bleak.

trying to do the math. Chooga had around 200k people living in and around that settlement. They had a small militia. Trying to figure out if 400 is all their combined manpower or if that is just Bailey's men.

Hopefully that means the settlements won't be completely destroyed.

Can anyone explain me everything again pls.

So salt, the serial killer that did not lose his mind with the infection, had a plan to merge the crossed in society and the black dude was a good crossed too ?

But who were the crossed inside the bĂșnker ?
And who were the people protecting it ?

From what I can tell, the crossed in the bunker were the ones that wanted to just kill everything. Robbie and the ones outside were trying to keep them in. Salt knew that eventually, if not kept in check the crossed would lead to mutual extinction. To prevent this robbie and his group were going to force integration among the people.

I'm still holding off on calling it genuinely bleak.

As a perfect merge, Now holds the future in her hands.
Sure, humanity might be go extinct...but the hope for a new race is in her hands.
Which is what Spurrier is trying to get across with her starting her own diary.

In a nutshell:
Salt at first wanted to rule society, but he realized that it would eventually go nowhere and be the end of pretty much everything.

He tried to instill this into his last two proteges, Bashful and Sleepy, but they had a bit too much bloodlust in them.
Bashful mostly went along with the plan, but Sleepy, and her faction, were all for the "fun" and were locked away until Bashful's death.
At which point a trap was set and Black Crossed tried to get Future to understand.

The people protecting it were one of the settlements the Crossed had taken over I think.

Salt and Jokemercy(the black guy) had a plan to integrate the human and Crossed societies, with Unfecteds and smart-Crossed bridging the gaps. They wanted to reach a balance of captured settlements that provide the occasional tithe to their Crossed masters .They knew that the species wouldn't survive total infection.
On the other hand you have Sneezy, who just wanted to infect everyone, regardless of the eventual outcome. So the Merge-Crossed locked her up in the bunker, and place some of the prisoners to make sure she stays inside.
Sneezy sent the second infiltrator Crossed to get captured and sell Bailey a fake story about the bunker. Bailey bought it and his shit got fucked up.
The end, AFAWK.

What if Avatar eventually relaunches Crossed as solely being in this post apocalyptic world?

Crossed + 120?

Nah this isnt the first crossed story Avatar left unanswered, for example smokey or the girl that lost her hand, the could had continue with their stories but decided to not.

Also remember the Moore has a saying in this, maybe he doesnt want the story to continue.

Gotta have someone with actual talent write the thing. I get the feeling that Spurrier is pretty much done with Crossed.
There's probably more sense in having an anthology series in the 100 years leading up to +100.

I mean, it would be interesting to think about now that Crossed as a series is kinda extinct itself.

They said on their facebook that they are making crossed announcements soon. This might be the mini series by Ennis (Once A Warrior King - 12 issues series, rumored to be)

And possibly another unannounced project. Whatever it is, they said they can't talk about it yet.

According to solicitation, they have nothing crossed based coming out in December 2016.

Cover featuring Sneezy.

According to the American History X cover, it looks like people are fighting for control of the bunker.
Does this mean this is the last day in history?

mediafire.com/folder/s6189bnkvq4og/Crossed

Yeah, I get the feeling he's tired of it.
The commentary is just too rich of that feeling.

Yeah, that's the best bet.
I wonder what else they could do that would be interesting. Another anthology is just Badlands again.

Last day in recorded history.
It's only 30ish years into the future.
Who knows how Future and Now are.

2144 is 30 years after this issue, and the hot air balloons are Gappler vehicles. Looks like they're taking back this territory. Hope the (140 year old) fog machine's out of commission by then.

Did they ever follow up on the first series?

What happened to the gay guy and blond chick?

I can take a pretty good guess but I'm just curious

The gay guy jumped off a cliff, dude. Cindy and Stan lived happily ever after with their dog, up in the frozen north.

Blind* jeez

Well, with Smokey we can assume that he either found what was implied to be Salt's community, or that he died getting revenge on the Twins.

The gay guy?
He died at the end of the original series.

The whole cast of the original series were in a flashback cameo in +100 #3 or so.

I guess that's a hopeful interpretation.

One of the two conditions that Ennis laid down in regards to allowing the franchise to expand was that the characters from the original story could never be revisited.

Yeah, I bet that Moore was only able to reference them because he had a sitdown with Ennis about doing a "future" story.

I am almost certain that Beau Salt was also just a joke about the Original Saltman.

Badlands ended in such a shitty way. And the art was mediocre to boot.

Well, it can't really be a last stand for humanity, since it's taking place right outside the bunker. At the very least, there's still ongoing conflict.

True. I like this interpretation. Makes sense. The New Yorkers (Big Apple - Gapplers) are attempting to retake the house.

Plus there's a nice amount of people.

Honestly, I think that 150 years of survival is probably the most upbeat ending of any Crossed series.

>sneezy
>only line of dialog in the series is 'bless you'
Pottery.

Fucking Spurrier.
Madman.

>And the art was mediocre to boot.
Agree. It was horrible for most of +100 too.

I wonder what things are like in other continents. I reckon that if the Crossed were sparse enough to allow settlements to form in the beginning of +100, then you'd expect to find similar settlements all around the colonized world. So even if Sneezy has her way, there's still hope for humanity overall.
Thing is, though, what if there were other Salt-like Crossed out there? China could be a Crossed empire with human feudal slaves, for all we know.

>what if there were other Salt-like Crossed out there

Of course there are.
Salt wasn't unique, not even his plan was.
He was just able to get shit under control more.

Honestly, I hope that the Five Bloody Fingers took control of Japan.

What bothered me most was the inconsistency. Felt like Spurrier's run changed artist every couple of issues.

Another thing to think about is whether Now and even Jokemercy's lament means that Gaia is done punishing us.

Patient Zero, before giving in, was very much the same.

He seems to get stuck with shit artists. His X-Men Legacy and X-Force were awful, artwise.

One of the Specials implied that the Abos of Australia had set up a hidden sanctuary deep within the Outback, but a lot can change in one hundred years.

Also the Crossed in Australia are all sprititual hippes led by a semi-lucid Crossed.

In the last badlands arc they said that some cartel guy is using cocaine to control the crossed, we can guess that Venezuela,Colombia, Ecuador and PerĂș and done.

Bolivia could be the only surviving country for the same reason why spaniards could ever take full control of that zone, the mountains, 80% of Bolivia principal cities are in mountains and La Paz is almost 1km above sea level, they can everything around them.

...

So I guess this is it.

I seriously doubt that the Garth Ennis Crossed mini is even getting released.

Man, do I feel like shit. First my game gets closed Marvel Avengers Alliance, now this comicbook basically ends.

At first is was just bile fascination, but I really took a liking to it.

My favorite stories were Smokey starting one with the anthropologist, the five bloody fingers, the ones from Spurrier, oh, and Fatal Englishman.

This was a hell of a ride guys.

God, that Special was awesome.

Spurrier had a great backlog of Crossed, so I'm not that down about his +100 not being as good.

Guy who said that assumed it was bullshit, though.

Same with other weird stories he's heard like people controlling the Crossed with voodoo.

I think it is.

I also think that they're going to get Burrows to do it.
Since they're releasing a new edition of the original miniseries, and he's hot right now after his amazing art in Providence.

Still is fun to speculate what happen to your country

Well, that sort of crossover with Mercury Heat is still going on.

>Since they're releasing a new edition of the original miniseries
Release date?

I guess, but I don't really want to have high expectations only for them to go to shit

So this is the end of Crossed for now I guess.
Kind of a bummer, but it couldn't last forever I guess.
When I read the first series by Ennis I did not think I would still be reading Crossed related things so many years later and that there would be some actual good stories in there
Man I wish WYWH was still ongoing

Only one issue left to Mercury Heat, as well. Avatar Press is winding down, it seems.

>Crossed is over
Question 1 - Am I the only one who liked Lapham's arcs? I'm a big troma/death metal guy and I thought he dialed in a pretty specific grindhouse exploitation tone.

Question 2 - Am I wrong in considering Raulo Caceres to be one of the most underrated artists in comics?

I know this is a Dick thing to say but thank god this is done with

In October.
Check the solicits.

Also, Badlands ended with a gallery of Burrow's art for the series.
Why would it unless they're trying to call attention to him alone?

Maybe he's taking his time again. I mean, imagine Crossed with Providence tier art.
That would be an amazing send off.

1. Nope. I've heard a lot of solid defenses for it. And Yellowbelly is close to being okay. But man Psychopath was just horrible haha.

2. Again, no. I think that he was probably able to play the series really well.

Family Values and Yellow Belly were passable. Psychopath gets a badge of dubious honor, since it's still the most extreme Crossed has gotten, even after all these years. The two Amanda stories are terrible, and the one about the guy chasing the pornographer had absolutely nothing noteworthy about it.
This record still puts him head and shoulders above most of the cretins who worked on the latter half of Badlands.
And yeah, Raulo is fucking great.

I liked psychopath for the sheer ridiculousness of the gore, form what I can remember off the top of my head he cuts off some guys face, mutilates his genitals, cuts off some chick's lips and puts them around his dick, he breaks a guys jaw so he can't bite while he's raping him in the mouth and the whole arc is basically page after page of that sort of stuff.
I like Raulo Caceres' art, it's good for Crossed covers
but it's really really shitty storywise

I guess.

It still feels kinda... empty. This story about Future and Now was really just starting and getting more interesting. I wanted to see if a society with lucid crossed and normal humans could work or it would go down the road of Homo Sapiens vs Homo Neanderthal

I guess it's kinda funny if you see it that way. Thousands of years from now, in the Crossed universe, the lucid Crossed basically form another civilization as us, only a bit more bloodlusted and aggresive.

Not even Lucid.
Now isn't Lucid, she's just been raised.

Imagine if she had kids of her own, and raised them right, like she was?

I think it would be Merges vs. Regular Crossed.

So in 300 years when civilization is back, everything is the same but everyone has a big red cross on their faces.

I didn't like his art for badlands 19-20, but he fucking nails in in The Fatal Englishman. The framing in issue 26, when Harry is trying to save his family is just awesome.

I feel like he was weak in Psychopath but did very great stuff in extinction parade.

readcomiconline.to/Comic/Crossed-Badlands/Issue-26?id=35901

I can't fucking understand a word they say and that kills the story for me.
A pity, it looks far better than the shit badlands has spit out in its run.

I guess

we need to remember that Crossed are humans in fact, but humans whose worst thoughts and instincts surfaced and those with weak minds became feral beasts or worse

I guess that if a Crossed really learns to rein in from birth, they basically become another human

Yeah, the only problem is that Now and any other Merges she might lead to are still, well, infectious.

Given that we still see humans in the 2144 cover, then they might not be so receptive of her kind even if they're nice.

If Now can function as a normal human being, then maybe the best solution would be to gradually phase out the humans. Have them nurse baby Crossed to maturity like with Now, and once you have enough Merge Crossed to sustain a society, allow them to die out. That way, you won't have to worry about anyone getting infected and rapemurderkilly. Infection would no longer be an issue.
It's like Louis CK says. Just look away for 25 years, and you never have to deal with this problem ever again.

There's a lot of possibilities.

I guess it is expected of Spurrier, who's last big Crossed work was about how it's better to leave off rather than to keep trudging in.

At least Spurrier got to finish it, his Wish You Were Here was pretty good with focus on non crossed characters

But wont a society like that be naturally segregated? Crossed kids won't be able to play with non infected. They won't be able to marry, or anything. The only solution would be to infect everyone from birth or wipe out the crossed.

Well yeah, but it's a temporary situation, that's the thing. With the alternative, you just get outbreak after outbreak. If you phase out the humans until you end up with Merger Crossed, you essentially wipe out the virus. Everyone who's infected knows how to control it, and every baby that's born will be educated by them.
