火车 refers generally to the physical object of a train.
列车 is used in reference to specific trains leaving at specific times and/or specific locations.
I.E.
你将在8号轨道找到你的列车。
Here it's saying you'll find your train at platform no. 8, so it's referring to a specific train, the one you want to get on. If I wanted to replace 列车 in this sentence with 火车 it would be technically correct but pragmatically (the proper use of words in context) wrong.
