Rereading this, I realize that there isn't a lot of old protagonists in comics like Scrooge.
Aside from the fact that it's a really good comic, it makes for some themes that aren't often seen, like life paths and regrets.

I guess it's because kids have an easier time identifying with other kids. which is also why some stories portray adults in ways that seem more like kids, or just put children into situations that don't fit them

like sesamy street. many of the characters are supposed to be adults, but they act more like kids anyways

It's sometimes a surprisingly grown-up comic to say it's about cartoon ducks.

I think that's sadly why it's so overlooked in the US - People don't expect "funny animal" comics to have any depth.
