The term "alt right" is a result of the media's failure to acknowledge the inherit false dichotomy of a left/right political spectrum.
It's easier to just label people left/right than to actually discuss ideas/beliefs/issues/etc.
It also probably results from First Past the Post Voting and Single Member Districts which almost always results in a two party system. Again it's simpler to just categorize the parties as left/right than to talk about things that actually matter.

Maybe I should have said fiscal rather than economic, but 'economic policy' is how a government chooses to tax/spend/regulate etc and can be somewhat usefully defined on a left/right scale.
