The help from the British government was pretty minor, especially compared to projects like the ISS or the Eurotunnel.
It's really neat, but why not make it completely a tunnel or bridge? Surely they could build a bridge high enough that any ship could pass under it. And they have that island in the middle that they could've built on, why not use that?
