Farms are too important to leave to single method, single crop, production. Corporate farms can deplete ground water, and poison rivers and lakes, but what is worse is that they can exploit local land for global markets - markets that don't have to pay for the environmental costs. One of the best ways to avoid the excesses of corporate farming is subsidies. Unfortunately, these subsidies become part of the corporate structure as well, and companies profit from them, against their original purpose.
And there's the corruption, because nothing gets done unless someone profits....
We need local farms, and something need to be done to insure they survive.

Farmers make really good money, that is farmers with fed grant money and subsidies galore.
I have 2 farmer friends, one was an algorithm analyst for Microserf in Seattle who dicked around with farm shit in his spare time and it ended up making twice what he earned at Microserf so he quit to be a F/T farmer.
The other is in BC who saved his shekels to buy a berry farm and makes about $80k/yr after tax (which is very little, since he's a farmer and hardly taxed). Keep in mind that 80k is only for 4 months of work the rest of the year he does nothing
